TREE PLANTING

1. Select your site, on our patch we work on a 5m by 5m grid to allow appropriate space for root and branch development

2. Dig a trench from you last mound in sequence to facilitate keeping your 19mm poly pipe irrigation below ground

3. Select your site for digging over, work on a 2m by 2m area to minimise competition from weeds and allow for better root development and drainage

4. Grab some gypsum if you have clayey soil, I apply approx. 1.5 bags to a 4m2 area. Gypsum addition will improve soil structure, drainage and water availability

5. Dig over the area where you are planning on planting and spread gypsum. Dig to 0.10m

6. Dig a 0.5 by 0.5m hole to a depth of approx. 0.3 to 0.5m at the centre of the dug are

8. Wrap some ag pipe in a spiral motion down to the bottom of the hole and secure to the starpicket with cable ties, more gypsum in the hole

9. Add some organic fertilizer to the hole base

10. Fill the hole with approximately 40 to 50L of water

11. Spread cardboard around the hole and over the area dug over in step 6

TREE PLANTING

13. Backfill the hole you dug earlier with one barrow load of soil then add a further 4 barrow loads of soil onto the cardboard emplaced in step 11. Soil utilised should have approximately the same consistency and fertilizer ratio that was used in step 12 above.

14. Spread good organic fertilizer over the top of the mound you have constructed

15. Use a fork to thoroughly turn the fertilizer into the mound. You should aim to dig the mound down to a depth of approximately 0.3m

16. Dig a well at the top of the mound and fill with water till it will take no more, approx. 50L used here. This may seem like a lot of water however the more utilised at this stage the better the quality of the final planting and the greater the chance that you tree will survive to live, thrive and give you great production in the years ahead

18. Pour the remainder of the rainwater and work farm leachate into the hole.

19. Gently remove the tree from the pot, tease out its roots and emplace central in the hole .

31. For deeper watering you want to run a 4L/hr slow weeper down the ag pipe line you put in earlier

32. Emplace a small hole into your 19mm black poly pipe.

33. Put a 4mm double ended barbed plug into hole
