May,

Dear Students, Greetings! It is my proud privilege to welcome you to one of the India’s renowned universities. This 156 years old University has always striven to maintain its heritage and embrace new developments in terms of teaching and research. Welcome to the portals of this great University which can boast of having more than 3,00,000 students already on roll. The Institute of Distance Education (IDE) of the University of Madras was started in 1981 with a vision to impart education to the students who, due to various circumstances, cannot undergo face to face education. Over the years, the IDE has remained a heaven for students who cannot afford to join colleges or who are employed or who are seeking an additional qualification. The IDE’s mission is to maintain the quality benchmarks in the education it offers. There is a vast array of courses that are offered in the IDE at different levels such as Postgraduate, Undergraduate, Diploma and Certificate. For facilitating independent study, all the learning resources of the IDE are prepared in Self Learning Format. The Personal Contact Programmes are handled by experienced faculty drawn from the university departments and affiliated colleges. It is a source of satisfaction for us to watch our students hone their understanding, introspection, knowledge and critical thinking skills during their course of study. We are confident that the degree you receive from the IDE, University of Madras will prepare you for facing the tough competition in the job market and for further study at higher education institutions. Through its increasing enrolment, the IDE takes education to the doorsteps of people thus increasing the number of students in the Higher Education sector. This enhances the Human Resource Development of our State and our Country. It is our shared duty to join hands to achieve the dream of education. My best wishes for your great success.
