    FOREWORD The book Going Places: A Career Guide, is a bold step towards providing professional information, personal account of the endeavours of notable personalities in our society, and a general guide towards choosing a career. Some works have been published on careers and professions, but rarely have we had successful professionals telling their own stories in a collection such as this one. Given the current emphasis on social ethical values, this book is timely, as we make the efforts to transit from a society riddled with corruption, to one where professionals would not only thrive in their chosen fields, but would also be recognised for the value they add. It is therefore impressive that professionals are sought after to contribute to special projects like this. In this book, a lot of professions have been covered, twenty-two in all. Another volume I am told would follow in which more professions would feature. This book is written in fine and simple language, which I trust would facilitate easy understanding. Young people, parents, advisers and teachers will find vast material to choose from when it comes to career choices. I applaud the effort of the editor Ms. Chinyere Nwoga, who conceived the idea and followed it to fruition. I recommend Going Places: A Career Guide. It will serve as a guide as well as a source material for further research about informing and guiding our young ones, and ultimately creating a better society for all. INTRODUCTION T his work originated from the dream and desire to help create informed, balanced and happy youths in our society through carefully planned activities. Nigeria is a nation endowed with limitless talents and potentials, some underutilized, most undiscovered. My main objective is to help harness these budding assets in our youths and steer them toward leadership and better citizenship. Professionals who have achieved notable success in different fields of endeavour were sought out and interviewed. The main focus was on their careers, and I encouraged them to share their experience practising their profession. Most young people in our society lack access to mentors and role models and this has remained a worrying factor. More importantly, choosing a career has remained a source of confusion, sometimes family disagreements and in extreme cases life-long bitterness. This compilation is intended to provide first hand details of what the professions are exactly about. With such information, young ones, parents, teachers, and those in the business of helping people choose careers would have a broader perspective of what these professions are about, and whether the talents match the choice of, or preference for a profession. It is hoped that this work would give a sense of ‘achievability’ to all who read it. All the professions may not have been covered, but it was not due to lack of effort. Getting nominees to respond was not an easy task, to say the least. However the compilation shall continue in subsequent volumes until all available materials are exhausted. I would, at this point wish to express my profound gratitude to you, my contributors. I must say my request was demanding, particularly given your busy schedules. That you made out time to respond proves without a doubt, your keen interest in our youths and your desire to see a better Nigeria. I have nothing to pay back with, except the promise that I shall not relent in my drive to provide vision and hope for our youths. I find it imperative at this point to mention my heart-felt appreciation to individuals who went out of their way to see this work through.     "Going Places: A Career Guide" is a 358-page compilation aimed at providing


    professional information, personal account of the endeavours of notable personalities in
    our society, and a general guide towards choosing a career. The contributors include Prof.
    Pat Utomi, HRH Sir Francis Ellah, Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, Admiral FBI Porbeni, Prof.
    Chukwuemeka Ike, and DIG O Onovo. Some works have been published on careers and
    prominent persons, but rarely have we had successful professionals telling their own
    stories in a collection such as this one.

    This work originated from the determination to help create informed and well-grounded
    youths in our society. Nigeria is a nation endowed with limitless talents and potentials,
    some underutilized, most undiscovered. In this era of youth restiveness, 'Going Places:
    A Career Guide' is indeed timely, as the main objective of this book is to help
    encourage these budding assets in our youths, give them a sense of ‘achievability’, and
    steer them toward leadership and better citizenship.

    Most young people in our society lack access to mentors and role models, and this has
    allowed destructive tendencies to take root in their lives. More importantly, choosing a
    career has remained a source of confusion, sometimes family disagreements, and in
    extreme cases, life-long bitterness. The 24 eminent professionals featured in 'Going
    Places: A Career Guide' are role models who have undoubtedly achieved distinguished
    success in different fields of endeavour. The main focus was on their careers, and they
    were encouraged to share their experience practising their profession. It is believed that
    this would provide a broader perspective on professions, and ultimately, help advice
    whether the talents match the choice of, or preference for a profession.

    It is also hoped that the experience shared in this book would provide a guide for young
    people, parents, teachers, and those whose job it is to guide and counsel people on career
    and life choices. This is in line with the current emphasis on social ethical values, as we
    transit from a society riddled with corruption, to one where professionals would not only
    thrive in their chosen fields, but would also be recognised for the value they add.

    This impressive book is written in fine and simple language, which facilitates easy
    understanding, and readers would find vast material and helpful references.
