The interfacial heat transfer coefficients are required for accurate simulation of casting processes.

The values of Interfacial heat transfer coefficients are calculated by Inverse heat transfer method.

## Inverse Heat transfer???

Inverse Problem:
An Inverse Problem is one of determining unknown causes on the basis of observed effects Contrast with a Direct Problem of computing system responses based on specified inputs

## Lets us consider a simple heat transfer problem.

Problem description:
Conductivity k Density- Specific Heat- 1-D Heat problem Temperature distribution F(x)

## Constant Heat flux f(t) at t>0

Constant Temperature

Direct Problem
Determination of the temperature distribution T(x, t) in the interior region of the solid, as a function of time and position.

Inverse Problem:
Consider a problem similar to that, but the boundary condition function f ( t ) at the surface x = 0 is unknown, while all the other quantities appearing in equations, such as TL, F(x), k, p and cp, are known. We then wish to determine the unknown boundary condition f(t).

Inverse Problem(contd.)
To compensate for lack of information we will measure temperature at a internal point at different times. We will try to estimate the surface condition based on this data.

## Class of Inverse Problem.

Inverse Boundary Problem
Determine unknown action at a physical boundary; typically a function of time

## Inverse Coefficient Problem

Determine unknown coefficients, such as thermophysical properties

## Interfacial Heat transfer coefficient:

The coefficient that describes Heat transfer at interface. For castings this interface properties will be dynamic.
