WhenIdisassembledandreassembledmyCanonMP730printerrecentlyIfoundmy purgeunitQG40279000haditsgearscoveredininksinceIhadnotcleaneduptheink whenIgottheWasteInkTankFullwarning.AtthetimeIjustorderedanewunit, installedit,andtheprinterworksfine.However,forfunIthenpartiallytookapartthe oldpurgeunittoseeifitcouldbeeasilycleaned.Ihavenotputitbackintheprinterto determinethatitworkssoIreallycantsaymyprocedureworksbutitseemsok.

WarningsandSafety
Thereisnoelectricalhazardsincetheunitisunpluggedandsinceittooksolongtogetto theunititshouldnotbehot.Thebigdangerthenisgettingtheinkontothings.Havea roleofpapertowelsreadyandworkovernewspapers.Youfollowthesedirectionsat yourownriskandIamnotlibelfordamagetoyourprinterortoyouoryourhouse(ink damageetc.oranyotherproblems).Alsoyourpurgeunitmaybedifferentfromtheone thatItookapartandsoyourexperiencemaybedifferentforwhichIamnottoblame. Youproceedatyourownrisk.

Step1Takeoffmotor
Totakeapartthepurgeunityoufirstunthreadthewiresfromthemotorthroughthecase. Thentakeoffthemotor byunscrewingtwoscrewsFigure1.

Setthescrewsandthemotorasideinacupforlaterassembly. Atthispointyoucould probablywashthepurgeunitinwaterandgetmostoftheinkoutandnottakeitapart further.Wereallyjustdidntwanttogetthemotorwet.However,itiseasytogoalittle further.

Step2Takeoffrightside
Takeofftherightsideofthepurge(asyoulookatitfromthemotorend).Thereare again2screws.Itshouldcomeofffairlyeasilywithallthegearsinitintact.Alsono piecesshouldfallofffromtheinside. TheflippedoffrightsideshouldlooklikeFigure2 butwithoutalltheink.

Turningthe blackgear,verycarefullyanditisprettyhardtoturn,causesthepurgeunitvacuumhead tomoveupanddown. Italsocausestheprintheadcarrierlock(whichisinthepiece withthegears), tobelockedandcoveredorunlockedanduncoveredforprinting.Itook thewhiteplateoffbyunhookingitfromtheblackgearandslidingittotheleftwhere thereisanotchintheframewhereabottomhookcanbepulledthrough.Thenwithit justpulledthroughitcanslideawayfromyoutounhooktwootherhooksthatholditto theframe.YoushouldseeawhitegearthatsitsundertheplateFigure4.

Youcantakeoutthewhitegearandputitinacupwiththewhiteplate.AtthispointI feltIcouldprettymuchseeeverythingsoIstoppedtakingthingsapartandwashed everythinginwater.Ofcourseyoudontwanttowashanythingdownthedrain,likea springoragearbutsurprisinglyeverythingprettymuchstayedtogether.TheonepartI wasalittlecarefulofwasthesensorunitwiththewirescomingfromit.SincetheCanon inkisconductiveyoudontwanttoleaveanyinkbetweenanyconnectionsthatcould shorttheprinter.Thusdontgetinkontheconnectionswhilewashingandifyoudo rinseitoffthoroughly. Ishouldmentionthattheactionsofthepurgeunitarepreformedbyhavingamotorthat rotatestwoways.Onewayitraisesandlowersthesuctionheadsandthelockingarm. Theotherwayitcreatesthesuction. Itknowswhenthesuctionheadsareraisedor loweredbygettinginputfromasensorwhichisactivatedbyoneofthesectionsofthe blackgeargoingbetweentwoarmsofthesensorthathastheotherwirescomingfromit. IcouldhavetakenofftheleftsideatthispointbutIfeltIcouldcleanitwellenough withoutdoingthat.Mostofthegearswiththeinkwereontherightsidewhichwas washedthoroughly.

Reassembly
1.PutonthewhiteplateFirstputinthewhitegearandpositionitsothewhiteplate stubgoesintotheholeinthegear.Positiontheplatesothehooksonthetopoftheplate areovertheframeitslidesonandthenputthelowerhookthroughtheholeintheframe andslidetheunitright.Isliditoveruntilithookedontheblackgearasitwasinthe beginning.ThereisprobablyanofficialprocedureforthisbutIdontknowit.

ProbablyifIwerearepairperson Iwouldputsomepropergreaseontheslidingpartsof theunitandthegearshere.Canonsuggestsyouuseaspecialgrease.Ididntuseanybut youwillnotetherewassomeoftheoriginalgreaseleftevenaftercleaning. When puttingthewhiteplateonIturnedtheblackgearsothehookwasintheupperleft quadrantandthewhiteplatejusthookedintoitaswhenItookitapartasinfigure3. 2.Putontherightside.Thisistricky.FirstIrotatedthegearsintherightsidesothe stubonthegearontherightwouldfitintotheholeintheblackgear.ThenIflippedthe rightsideoverandputitonmakingsuretheblackgearsendpointwentintheholeinthe caseandthatthestubonthewhitegearwentintheblackgearshole.AtthesametimeI slightlyturnedthegearontheleftsoitmeshedwiththegearonthemechanismwhich turnsandcreatesthesuction.AlsoIheldthelockingpindownandmadesureitsspring wasseated.Thustherearefourthingsthathavetobedoneatonce.If everythingmeshes therightsidewillfitflatonthecaseandyoucanputinthetwoscrews. Ifyouhavedone itcorrectly1)thelockingpinwillnotbesotightitwontmoveupanddowneasily,2) turningthelargegearwhoseteethshowjustinsidetherightcoverclockwisewillcause thesuctionassemblytogoupanddownandthewipertogobackandforth.Noteittakes alittlepressureonthegeartomakethesethingshappenbutdontbreakthegearteeth. Thisisprobablythetrickiestpartofthewholejob.Notethatthesuctionassemblywont godownifthepurgeunitissittingonatablesincethesuctiontubescomebelowthecase whentheunitisdown.Figure6

Alsoatthispointcheckthattherubbertubescomingfromtheplasticnipplesofthe suctionareaareconnectedandthattheydidntcomedetachedinthecleaning.Iftheydid comedetachedtherewillbenosuctioninthesuctionareaandnoinkcomingtotheprint headviasuction.ThebottomofthepurgeunitshouldlooklikeFigure7.

3.Putonthemotor.Ifeverythingisworkingsmoothlywhenyouturnthebiggearthen youcanputthemotorbackonmakingsurethegearsmesh.Twoscrews.
