In the name Allah , Most Gracious Most Merciful Your Shiite associates have misled you with regards

to the Bayat to Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and the actions taken by Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu). he actual incident is not how they have !ortrayed it. "hat ever has been mentioned with regards to this incident in the Saheehul Bukhari# $usnad Ahmad# %an&ul Ummal# Albidayah wan 'ihaayah# Alkaamil (i ibni Atheer# Seeratun 'abawi (i ibni )isham and areekhul *slaam (ith hahabi# boils down to the +act that# a+ter the demise o+ Rasoolullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi "asallam)# Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and the ma,ority o+ the Ansaar and the $uha, ireen were busy with the burial arrangements. -n the other hand a +ew Ansaar Sahabah (Radhiallaahu Anhum) gathered with Saad Bin Ubaadah (Radhiallaahu Anhu) at Bani Saaidah. heir intention was to a!!oint Saad Bin Ubaadah (Radhiallaahu Anhu) as the %hali+ah. )ad this materialised without the mutual consent o+ the Akaabir Sahabah (Radhiallaahu Anhum) and the $uha, ireen Sahabah (Radhiallaahu Anhum) it would have been very ina!!ro!riate. Seeing this one Sahabi immediately headed +or the house o+ Rasoolullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi "asallam) and asked Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu)# who was at the time busy with the burial arrangements# to ste! outside the house. At +irst Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) re+used to come out due to his engrossment# but when the Sahabi hurried him and in+ormed him o+ the im!ortance# Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) came outside and the Sahabi in+ormed him o+ the gathering o+ the Ansaar. -n hearing this Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) immediately called Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu)# who was also busy with the burial arrangements and re+used to come out. "hen Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) in+ormed him o+ the im!ortance o+ the issue# he immediately headed +or Bani Saaidah together with Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and Abu Ubaidah ibnul /arrah (Radhiallaahu Anhu). his makes it very clear that Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu)and Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) did not take any initial ste!s in trying to attain the %hilaa+at0 rather# they were busy in the burial arrangements. Another Sahabi had come and in+ormed Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) regarding the gathering o+ the Ansaar. 1rom this incident one can understand the im!ortance o+ Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu). Also# Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) did not go to Bani Saaidah alone0 rather he took Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and Abu Ubaidah ibnul /arrah (Radhiallaahu Anhu) with him (these three Sahabah are +rom amongst the 2Ashara $ubash shararah i.e. the ten com!anions who were given glad3tidings o+ /annah in this world by 'abi (Sallallaahu Alayhi "asallam)). A!!arently Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) did not take Ali (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and 4ubair (Radhiallaahu Anhu) with him because they were the immediate relatives o+ 'abi (Sallallaahu Alayhi "asallam) and it was more a!!ro!riate +or them to remain engaged in the burial arrangements. *t has been mentioned in a )adith that a+ter Ali (Radhiallaahu

Anhu) delivered 'abi (Sallallaahu Alayhi "asallam) into the Raudhah $ubarak he said5 6A !ersons +amily and relatives are the ones res!onsible +or arranging his burial.7 (Sunan Abu 8awood# 9ol. :# ;age <=:) Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) mentioned in detail during his %hilaa+at that Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) went to Bani Saaidah in order to in+orm and e>!lain to the Ansaar. )e did not know that in the interim he would have the res!onsibility o+ a!!ointing a %hali+ah. his is also the reason why he did not take Ali (Radhiallaahu Anhu) with him. "hen these three Sahabah reached Bani Saaidah they saw that the Ansaar were in a very emotional state and were about to a!!oint Saad bin Ubaadah (Radhiallaahu Anhu) as the %hali+ah. his was under no circumstances correct or a!!ro!riate. Besides the $uha, ireen# none o+ the Ansaar would have been ha!!y to take Bayat on the hands o+ Saad bin Ubaadah (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and there was also a great +ear that there would have been a revolt. Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) has also indicated to this in his detailed sermon which is mentioned in Bukhari. 1or this reason Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) ste!!ed +orward and e>!lained to them with great wisdom that the %hali+ah should be +rom amongst the ?uraish because the entire Arab world res!ects them. A+ter this Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) raised the hands o+ Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and Abu Ubaidah ibnul /arrah (Radhiallaahu Anhu) in +ront o+ the congregation and re.uested them to take Bayat on the hands o+ either o+ the two. he Ansaar did not agree to this but they demanded that there should be an Ameer +rom amongst the Ansaar as well as the $uha, ireen which was also ina!!ro!riate. )ow could it be !ossible that there be two di++erent rulers in one country at the same time@ -n this occasion Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) said5 6 wo swords can not be gathered in one sheath.7 "hen Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) saw that the di++erences were not settling and the arguing was not coming to an end and the +ear o+ a revolt was becoming imminent# he made Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) ascend the !ul!it and declared that he is taking Bayat on the hands o+ Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu). Be+ore Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) could take Bayat# an Ansaari Sahabi took Bayat on the hands o+ Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu). -n seeing this all the $uha, ireen and Ansaar that were !resent also took Bayat on the hands o+ Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) e>ce!t Saad bin Ubaadah (Radhiallaahu Anhu). "hen !roving that Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) is worthy o+ %hilaa+at# Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) mentioned that 6'abi (Sallallaahu Alayhi "asallam) +orwarded Abubakar to lead the Salaat during his li+etime and he is one o+ the haani ul *thnain i.e. the com!anion o+ 'abi (Sallallaahu Alayhi "asallam) in the cave. )ow can Umar become the %hali+ah while he is !resent@7 Abu Ubaidah ibnul /arrah (Radhiallaahu Anhu) said the same thing. 4aid bin haabit (Radhiallaahu Anhu)# who was an Ansaari Sahabi# also said the same thing and e>!ounded the virtues and the im!ortance o+ the $uha, ireen to the Ansaar. *n this manner# those Ansaar who wanted to a!!oint Saad bin Ubaadah (Radhiallaahu Anhu) as the %hali+ah# also willingly took the Bayat on the hands o+ Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu).

his gathering was a coincidence. he Ansaar were the cause o+ this gathering. Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) did not gather them in order to attain the %hilaa+at0 rather they were +orced to go to Bani Saaidah in order to avert an u!rising. *+ this method was not ado!ted and these three Sahabah came away +rom Bani Saaidah# one grou! o+ the Ansaar would have chosen a %hali+ah +rom amongst them as they were in a great emotional state and were not !re!ared to delay the a!!ointment o+ a %hali+ah. *+ at that time an Ansaar Sahabi was a!!ointed as the %hali+ah in the absence o+ the senior Sahabah there was a great !ossibility that the Arabs would have re,ected him and disunion and bloodshed would have broke out immediately a+ter the demise o+ Rasoolullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi "asallam). his is e>actly what a Sahabi indicated towards while admonishing the Ansaar Sahabah that5 6You were the +irst to su!!ort and assist *slam so do not be the +irst ones to +inish it i.e. by .uarrelling and +ighting amongst yourselves.7 'ow one should !onder that u!to this !oint what did Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) do wrong. hey did not claim nor did they demand %hilaa+at +or themselves# rather a+ter e>!laining to the Ansaar# Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) !ro!osed Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and Abu Ubaidah ibnul /arrah (Radhiallaahu Anhu) to be a!!ointed as the %hali+ah and Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) !ro!osed Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) to be the %hali+ah and all the !resent $uhaa,ir and Ansaar Sahabah acce!ted the !ro!osal o+ Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu). *t is not !roven +rom any authentic te>t that Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) has cons!ired to do something and gathered the Ansaar at Bani Saaidah and their going there was !art o+ the cons!iracy. *+ anybody claims this then they should bring +orth their !roo+s. his is also the reason why Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) had termed this %hilaa+at as a coincidence during his %hilaa+at because they had no idea in their mind nor was it !re3!lanned. Ali (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and other $uhaa,ir Sahabah did not take !art in this Bayat because they were engaged in the burial arrangements o+ Rasoolullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi "asallam) and a!!arently they did not even know what trans!ired outside o+ the house. -ne cannot say that Ali (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and other $uhaa,ir Sahabahs +ailure to take the Bayat was because they disagreed with it# rather this is the reason why those Sahabah who were not !resent at the time o+ the Bayat were not taunted. A general $a,lis took !lace the +ollowing day in the $as,id3un3 'abawi +or everybody to take the Bayat so that nobody could raise any ob,ection to Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) being the %hali+ah and that he did this in secret. *t is also incorrect to level accusations against Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) o+ not calling Ali (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and other Sahabah to Bani Saaidah because when they le+t the home o+ Rasoolullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi "asallam) they did not know what was going to ha!!en# neither did they go there with the intention o+ obtaining the %hilaa+at themselves. "hatever ha!!ened at Bani Saaidah was a coincidence and une>!ected.

*t is !roven +rom +ew narrations that a+ter the incident o+ Bani Saaidah# Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) returned to Rasoolullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi "asallam)s house to in order to assist with the burial arrangements. -n the +ollowing day Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) sat on the !ul!it in the $as,id3un3'abawi and Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) stood in +ront o+ the Sahabah and said a +ew words and also e>cused himsel+ +or what he had said on hearing o+ the demise o+ Rasoolullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi "asallam). )e +urther said that5 6Rasoolullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi "asallam) has !assed away and you have the ?uran with you.7 Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) then !ointed towards Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and mentioned his virtues and that he was Rasoolullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi "asallam)s com!anion in the cave and that he is more worthy o+ %hilaa+at than anybody else and everybody should take Bayat on his hands. All the Sahabah !resent in the $as,id took Bayat on the hands o+ Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and this was known as the general Bayat. At the time o+ this Bayat two very im!ortant and +amous Sahabah# i.e. Ali (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and 4ubair (Radhiallaahu Anhu) were not !resent. his was very con+using. Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) en.uired o+ their whereabouts. A +ew Sahabah o+ the Ansaar stood u! and called Ali (Radhiallaahu Anhu) and 4ubair (Radhiallaahu Anhu) to the $as,id. "hen these two Sahabah (Radhiallaahu Anhu) arrived at the $as,id Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) asked Ali (Radhiallaahu Anhu)5 6"hy havent you taken Bayat ins!ite o+ you being the cousin and son in3law o+ Rasoolullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi "asallam)@ 8o you wish to cause disunity amongst the $uslims@7 -n hearing this Ali (Radhiallaahu Anhu) e>cused himsel+ and took Bayat on the hands o+ Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu). hen Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) asked 4ubair (Radhiallaahu Anhu) the same .uestion and also asked him that5 6*ns!ite o+ being the cousin o+ Rasoolullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi "asallam) and a )awaari# do you wish to create disunity amongst the $uslims@7 )e too e>cused himsel+ and took Bayat on the hands o+ Abubakar (Radhiallaahu Anhu). As +ar as what has been mentioned in a +ew narrations that Ali (R.A.) and 4ubair (R.A.) gathered at the house o+ 1atima (R.A.) and Umar (R.A) went there and threatened them# * would like to say that a!!arently a+ter the burial o+ Rasoolullah (S.A.".) and be+ore the general Bayat in the $as,id# Ali (R.A.) and 4ubair (R.A.) and a +ew $uha, ireen Sahabah gathered at the house o+ 1atima (R.A.) and thought that because the general Bayat had not yet been taken# we should a!!oint Ali (R.A.) as the %hali+ah. hey discussed this matter amongst themselves and 4ubair (R.A.) also announced that he will back Ali (R.A.) with his sword. -n the other hand many o+ the $uha, ireen and Ansaar had already taken Bayat on the hands o+ Abubakar (R.A.) at Bani Saaidah# now i+ another %hali+ah had to be a!!ointed# there was a great +ear o+ revolt and the Ansaar would again have demanded that an Ameer be a!!ointed +rom amongst them. here+ore# in order to su!!ress this revolt Umar (R.A) went to 1atima (R.A.)s house and at that time Ali (R.A.) and 4ubair (R.A.) were not !resent. *t has been stated in %an&ul Ummal that Umar (R.A) told 1atima (R.A.) that5 6- the daughter o+ Rasoolullah (S.A.".)# nobody +rom amongst the !eo!le is

more beloved to me than your +ather and nobody is more beloved to me than you a+ter your +ather. * have received the bad news that these !eo!le are gathering in your house and cons!iring against the %hilaa+at o+ Abubakar. *+ they do not sto! cons!iring then by AllahA * will burn their homes.7 -n saying this Umar (R.A) le+t and when Ali (R.A.) and 4ubair (R.A.) arrived at the house o+ 1atima (R.A.)# 1atima (R.A.) said to them5 68o you know that Umar came to see me and he has taken an oath that i+ you cons!ire against the %hilaa+at o+ Abubakar he will burn your homes@ By AllahA Umar will most de+initely +ul+il his oath. here+ore leave my house with the intention o+ dro!!ing your o!inions and thoughts and do not return with the same ob,ect.7 Ali (R.A.) and 4ubair (R.A.) le+t the house and did not gather there again until they took Bayat on the hands o+ Abubakar (R.A.). (%an&ul Ummal# 9ol. B# ;age CB<) 1rom this narration o+ %an&ul Ummal a +ew !oints have become clear and evident5 "hen Umar (R.A) arrived at 1atima (R.A.)s house Ali (R.A.) and 4ubair (R.A.) were not !resent# there+ore neither did Umar (R.A) meet them nor did a +ight or .uarrel break out. <.
