FLAT BED DIE CUTTING

Industrial and consumer goods are delivered to end users and commercial enter- prises in adequate packaging.

Packaging, especially folding carton boxes, offer protection for the product and also ensure that the goods are delivered safely. Over the last few decades we have seen a steady increase in the use of packaging as an advertising media to increase the product image as well as the corporation behind them.

To ensure the required quality of the finished product cartons are processed on high precision converting machines. The applied method of flat bed die cutting allows for high speed converting and accuracy of the packaging material.

Cutting dies are hi-tech tools produced with the help of state-of-the-art automatic steel rule processors as well as laser and water-jet machinery.

Basic requirement for optimum cutting results is the use of high precision cutting & creasing rules.

BÖHLER is your reliable partner when it comes to steel rule competence. BÖHLER steel rules are 100% made in Austria/Europe!

PRODUCTION RANGE

Böhler cutting, scoring and label rules are separated into two main groups, illustrating the optimum properties for the respec- tive applications:

Through-hardened Rules:

These rules have a uniformly high hardness on the cutting edge and in the body. Special heat treatment produces a particu- lar grain structure and a soft, ductile outer skin, which facilitates the required bendability. The cutting edge is usually shaved (longitudinally worked), with a very high dimensional accuracy.

® CUTTING RULES

for automated bending machines

Based on the high bending consistency of our present TOP and UNIVERSAL cutting rules, we have developed two rule qualities which offer absolute constant bending properties and are therefore ideal for use with automatic benders.

• TOP Auto-Flex • UNI Auto-Flex

Auto-Flex rules allow a variety of uniform bending shapes due to tightest produc- tion tolerances.

BÖHLER CUTTING RULES HARDNESS VALUES AND BENDING PROPERTIES Guaranteed Bending Properties Brand Hardness Edge Body Edge

Cutting rules with flat (rectangular) back eventually create problems when bending narrow angles because of the bulging effect on the cutting rule back.

The unique BÖHLER K-back (compensation back) minimizes this effect and offers various benefits:

Minimizing of rule back deformation without broaching necessity (height compensation) Self levelling of the rule when high cutting force is applied. The rule back is flattened slightly Knifes with round back execution fit easier into plywood slots in comparison with square shaped rule backs

BÖHLER CUTTING RULES

TYPES OF CUTTING BEVELS

In order to meet with the various cutting applications, we offer the complete bevel range.

  • CF

CF – Centre Face (Centre Bevel)

The CF-bevel is the most commonly used symmetric cutting edge for standard cardboard.

Standard edge angle: 53° (others on request)

  • SF

SF – Side Face (Single Bevel)

This type of cutting edge is particularly suitable for cutting hard materials (gaskets, displays and close shapes). The minimum counter bevel facilitates a right angled, straight cut.

  • CFDB

CFDB – Centre Face Double Bevel

This type of cutting edge reduces the cutting force required when cutting hard and/or thick materials, such as glass fibre reinforced laminates, leather, cork, rubber, jigsaw puzzles, corrugated board, plastics, plywood, etc.

  • SFDB

SFDB – Side Face Double Bevel

The SFDB profile offers the same advantages as the CFDB when cutting thicker materials. SFDB has the advantage that the substrate is left with a square 90° cut edge and all the distortion from penetration is left on the material waste. Not

available in “G” execution.

ground cutting edge has proven the best. For these applications we recommend our induction hardened cutting rules (UNI, UNI 60 and UNI 75) in ground edge finish.

Ground

finishing guarantees a sharper cutting

in cleaner cutting

faces, less

knife wear and

therefore easier penetration into the cutting material,

thus, reducing cutting force. For thermoforming jobs UNI 60 “G” is highly recommended.

P: Polished Bevel

Polished cutting rules combine the benefits of shaved (drawn) and ground (sharp- ened) execution in one rule.

The result is a very smooth (fine grain) surface offering:

dust reduction less friction when the rule penetrates into the cutting material cleaner cutting faces improved bending properties in the rule top edge compared to ground execution rounding off the transition zone between cutting bevel and body

COATED CUTTING RULES

In general coated cutting rules provide several advantages such as reduced dust, longer tool life and less wear on rules and counterplates.

BÖHLER CUTTING RULES COATED CUTTING RULES In general coated cutting rules provide several advantages such as

The Supreme cutting rule was originally developed for the label industry with the goal to restrict the build-up of adhesive on the cutting edge. This type of rule is now used successfully in a variety of applications. It has gained reputation for dust-reduction for boards with increased recycled fibre content. Supreme-coating significantly reduces mechanical wear and tear on the cutting edge thereby considerably increases the cutting die lifetime. In the same way the required press force is substantially lowered, which contributes considerably to extending the life of expensive automatic platens.

By means of a special process the cutting bevel of the Supreme rule is coated with a thin anti-friction-film which fills the microscopically small pores and marks on the

cutting edge and thereby adds to the smoothness of the bevel surface. Supreme coated rules are offered in Universal and Universal 60.

Special Characteristics:

dust-reduced cutting • reduction of press force thus less wear on die cutting equipment

reduction of friction between cutting edge and cutting material substantially increased service life of the die

TINIT (TiN)

TEFLON

BÖHLER CUTTING RULES COATED CUTTING RULES In general coated cutting rules provide several advantages such as

Tinit cutting rule bevels are coated with a thin TiN-layer of approx. 1 micron. The unique feature of TINIT coating is its extreme hardness of ~ 2400 HV based on a hardened cutting edge with ~ 640 HV.

Bendability, body structure, cutting geometry and dimensions are compa- rable to our standard Böhler Universal rule. TINIT is available in shaved exe- cution, in CF and CFDB (double bevel) and optional in Universal 60.

TINIT rule benefits:

significantly increased die lifetime higher efficiency in the converting process increase in productivity due to fewer die changes higher wear-resistance on cutting edge same good bendability as uncoat- ed rule less dust in cutting process

PLASTIC-CREASE

Conventional Creasing of Plastics:

Böhler Plastic-Crease is a special type

of cut-crease

lines in plastic sheet material (PET, PVC, etc.).

• Local reduction of folding resistance by decreasing the material thickness, no creasing matrix is used. • Creased parts may bulge, which create problems in automatic folding and gluing machines. • Hot-creasing technology gives better results, but is expensive. • Creased plastic sheets may develop micro-cracks upon folding, visible as milky shades in the material.

BÖHLER STEEL RULES

FORMS OF DELIVERY

Cut Lengths:

BÖHLER steel rules are produced in standard lengths of 1.000 mm and 762 mm (30 inches) respectively. High cutting rules (30 – 100 mm) are additionally offered in lengths of 1.500 mm (59 inches) from stock.

Coils:

Material delivered in coils is packed in dispenser boxes or if steel strapped (radial) in corresponding coil packaging.

Dispenser boxes:

Dispenser boxes allow easy pull of the rule out of the box for just the rule length required thus minimizing rule waste.

These boxes additionally protect the rule and are a safe way of storage.

Standard coil boxes:

For automatic bending machines various types of coils are offered. Based on the machine type the inner diameter and wind- ing direction have to be specified. The standard inner diameters are 356 mm and 400 mm. Further diameters are available upon request.

Coil Winding Directions:
