Message from the Founder
“If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.” ~ Henry David Thoreau
Dear friends of the Global Youth Fund, Thereʼs no denying that we - the founders of Global Youth Fund - dream big, really big! It keeps us going and gives us hope for our planet and for our future. In 2006, our dreams began to take shape and weʼve been diligently building the foundations of our new organization. Not only did we register Global Youth Fund as a non-profit (society) in Canada, we also acquired charity status (in Canada) within 9 months. During that time, we began to reach out to youth, educators and community organizations throughout the world but especially in Vancouver, where we are headquartered. In September, we launched an international essay project called This I Believe to promote the global sharing of wisdom and knowledge among youth. It helps pave the way for the eventual launch of the “fund,” which rests entirely on youth making collective decisions on what global actions to support, what their priorities ought to be. Ultimately, our goal is to create a truly open and democratic forum where youth around the world can unite around a common cause and take collective action to produce massive change. And when they speak, the world will listen! Finally, I want to thank all our supporters - youth and adults alike - who not only believe in our cause but contributed to our efforts. And a big thanks to our board members who are there every step of the way. Brace yourselves for an amazing new year! Peace. Charles Tsai, Executive Director

2006 Annual Report

Year in Review: 2006
The first year of Global Youth Fund was devoted to getting the organization properly set up and recognized. Here are the major milestones:

Charity Status
With help from our law firm, Bull, Housser & Tupper, we applied for charity registration and was granted charity status in August 2006. This opens the door to financial support from foundations and many corporations.

HellerEhrmanLLP
The Creative Visions Foundation

Funding & Support
Our charity status allowed us to apply and receive two grants from two strong advocates of youth - The Steve Nash Foundation and the Vancouver Foundation. We are grateful to both institutions for being the first funders of our young organization. In addition, we are excited to have the Creative Visions Foundation provide fiscal sponsorship in the U.S. and to have HellerEhrman adopt us as a pro bono client. Last but not least, we are grateful beyond words to our first individual donors: Elaine Munro, Amy & Jon Turteltaub, Bruce Johnson, and Brooke Kuhn.

Global Youth Fundʼs This I Believe
We launched our very first program, This I Believe - an international essay project that promotes global dialogue and peer-to-peer learning among youth. Through word-of-mouth alone, we are receiving essays daily from young people in 25 countries!

2006 Annual Report

Looking Forward: 2007
The Pilot Year
Global Youth Fundʼs second year - 2007 - will be its defining moment. We will put theory into practice and begin work on harnessing the collective wisdom of youth for positive change. We will focus our work in the following areas:

Changemakers Leadership Program
GYFʼs core program, Changemakers will guide youth in a unique process to design and select their own campaign for global change - one that leads to concrete and measurable change. Through meaningful dialogue and debate, they will help one another explore common challenges and solutions, and set collective priorities. The program will expose youth to a powerful model of leadership for our globalized world.

This I Believe Essay Project
With grants from the Steven Nash and Vancouver foundations, GYF will scale up This I Believe and engage more youth in the essay project. We will build a new website to allow for more submissions, and launch a podcast to showcase high-quality recordings of the best essays.

Partnerships
GYF will forge strong partnerships in the new year with appropriate educational institutions, non-profit organizations, and corporations to advance our mission. These partnerships will be the key to our success - and our future sustainability. We look forward to reporting back next year!
