Directors Desk The Benefits of Exercise

Dear Step into Life Members, Family and Friends How many times have you been around the coffee table or out to dinner and someone mentions that they really need to motivate themselves to start exercising because they want to GET FIT AND LOSE WEIGHT. Yes improved fitness and weight loss is a definite benefit of a regular exercise routine but are you aware that regular exercise offers benefits far beyond the obvious. Exercise helps to increase your energy levels. As your exercise increases, your strength and stamina will improve and so you will feel more energetic throughout the day. Stress levels are reduced with regular exercise. It helps to take your mind away from your daily routine and elevates your mood. A number of experts in their field talk about the natural high that a person experiences after a good workout. Research has shown that regular exercise also helps to boost brain power and improve mental health. It has also been noted that people who actively exercise are much more productive at work. It may not be obvious to all of us but exercise also helps us build relationships. How many of you have made friends with your training partners at Step into Life. I have no doubt that these friendships extend beyond your Step into Life sessions. Confidence and self esteem will also improve with exercise. As you get fitter and stronger so you will feel more confident in yourself and your ability to take on those bigger challenges and those more daunting sessions. Continued on next page

It has been shown over the years that regular exercise can help to slow and prevent disease and illness such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and osteoporosis. Some people are even of the opinion that regular exercise even helps with some aspects of the ageing process. Exercise also helps to strengthen one of the most important organs in our bodies, the pump that works 24/7, our hearts. Activity will help our heart and cardiovascular systems to function more effectively and efficiently which will lead to improved health. Performance and vitality will all improve as you continue to exercise on a regular basis. Each and every time you attend a Step into Life session you are improving your health and well being in a multitude of different ways. Keep up the good work and enjoy your training. The Sunshine Vitamin
Did you know that Vitamin D deficiency is a growing epidemic worldwide and Australians are certainly not immune? Vitamin D is known as the 'sunshine vitamin' as it is made in the skin when exposed to ultraviolet light. Only a limited number of food sources provide us with Vitamin D and therefore a deficiency is less of a nutritional issue and more an environmental deficit due to inadequate UV exposure. Traditionally a deficiency in Vitamin D was considered the domain of the elderly and those living at higher latitudes. However despite our latitude and warmer weather, Australians have joined the Vitamin D deficient pandemic. Sun block, protective clothing, age, time of day and skin pigmentation all have an impact on Vitamin D absorption. Many of us spend little time in the sun and when we do we lather ourselves in sun block and protective clothing. A Vitamin D deficiency has a significant impact on your health. Calcium metabolism and bone health are both compromised with long-term deficiency related to osteoporosis and stress fractures. In addition Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with chronic health problems such as bowel and colonic cancer, arthritis, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. It is recommended that you get your Vitamin D levels checked twice a year. Supplementation is only recommended after consultation with your GP. In addition sensible sun exposure of 10-30 minutes a couple of times a week and the inclusion of foods rich in Vitamin D will assist in boosting your levels. Such foods are listed below: - Egg yolk - Fortified milk, yoghurt, butter/margarine - Oily fish eg. Tuna, salmon, mackerel, sardines - Cod liver oil
