Bank on San Francisco is a joint effort of the Office of the Mayor, the Office of the Treasurer, and the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. The goal is to bring 10,000 of the estimated 50,000 unbanked individuals in San Francisco into the financial mainstream by helping them to open a low-cost, starter bank account. We believe Bank on San Francisco will help thousands of San Franciscans get on the path to financial security. Most of us rarely think about the convenience of having a bank account. The fact is that consistent use of a traditional banking account actually saves you time and money. At a minimum, you enjoy the option of direct deposit, access to online bill pay and use of a debit card. But what if you didn’t have a bank or credit union account? How much would it cost to cash your checks? How would you pay your bills? Would you be prepared to carry cash at all times? In fact, this is the reality for thousands of San Francisco residents. Over the past year, banks and credit unions have met with representatives from my office and the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco to develop policies and product features that will facilitate banking for unbanked residents. This directory provides information about each participating institution’s policies and product features. As a recipient of this directory, we are looking to you to help us get the word out about Bank on San Francisco. We know that we cannot connect with our target communities without the help of trusted messengers who can explain the benefits of banking and encourage unbanked clients or employees to open a suitable account with a partner bank or credit union.
