Many of you express gratitude quite often. Of course, we feel better by saying thanks, but it also has a profound effect on others. Here is one great example I first read in the 70’s. William Stidger taught at Boston University. He had a shattering emotional breakdown. Stress accumulated and led to depression. Unable to work and no therapy seemed to help. Then a friend challenged him to try the therapy of thankfulness. “Many people have helped you in your life. Pick one of them and simply tell him thanks.” William Stidger thought for a while and recalled a school teacher, long retired. She had created in him an appreciation of great literature. So he wrote her a note, saying what her influence had meant to him. Her reply came back in the tremulous handwriting of an elderly lady. My Dear Willie, I cannot tell you how much your note meant to me. I am in my eighties, living alone in a small room, cooking my own meals, lonely and like the last leaf of autumn, lingering behind. You will be interested to know that I taught school for fifty years and yours is the first note of appreciation I ever received. It came on a blue-cold morning and it cheered me as nothing has in many years.” And here is the amazing finish. William was so touched he wrote to another person, then another until he had written over 400 such letters. The result? Within a year his depression was gone and he was back to work. There is therapy in thankfulness. We all remember people who shaped our lives in various ways. Maybe they are one of the thankless millions. The teacher who gave you exam help. The coach that believed in you. The Sunday School teacher that cared week after week to share Christ. Why not write them today? Here is my two verse letter of thanks to you. Look it up. Philippians 1:3-4. By the way, grateful people become great people. I’ll see you Sunday.
