ME - 615 Rotor Dynamics

Assignment # 1 Last Date of Submission: 15-02-2013 Marks: 20

Q 1. A rigid steel rotor, 1m long, is supported by plain bearings at each end as shown in Figure 1. In the y direction the effective bearing/foundation stiffness are k1 and k2 at the left and right ends respectively. In the x direction the left end bearing/foundation stiffness is so high that the support can be assumed to be rigid. The right end the bearing/foundation stiffness is k0. The center of mass of the rotor is at the mid-span. Develop the equations of motion for small displacements of this three degree of freedom system. Suppose k0 = 1.0 MN/m, m = 100 kg, Ip = 2 kgm2, the diametral moment of inertia about the center of mass is Id = 6 kgm2, and a = 0.5L = 0.6 m. Note that, using the parallel axis theorem, the diametral moment of inertia about the left end is Id1 = Id + ma2 = 6+ 1000.62 = 42 kgm2. Determine the natural frequencies of this system under the following conditions: (a) = 0, k1 = 1.6 MN/m, k2 = 2.1 MN/m, (b) = 10000 rev/min, k1 = k2 = 2.1 MN/m.

are stiff and 0.7m apart, and the shaft extends 0.4m beyond the bearing as shown in the diagram. The shaft is 30mm in diameter and is made from steel with a Young's modulus of 211GPa. The disk has a mass of 32 kg, a diametral moment of inertia of 2.1 kgm2 and a polar moment of inertia of 3.8 kgm2. The mass of the shaft is negligible compared with the mass of a disk. Develop the differential equations of motion for this system, allowing for gyroscopic effects. Then, determine the natural frequencies of the rotor when it is stationary and when it is spinning at 3000 rev/min. Note that you will need to solve a quartic equation. Use the values of s for this system, both when stationary and spinning, to determine the corresponding ratios y/x, and sketch the mode shape of the system as it whirls (vibrates) in each mode.

Q 2. A rotating machine consists of a shaft with an overhung disk as shown in Figure 2. The bearings

Q 3. A rigid rotor mounted on two flexible supports, shown in Figure 3, has its center of gravity located mid way between the supports. The rotor has a mass of 1200 kg, a polar moment of inertia of 32 kgm2 and a diametral moment of inertia its center of gravity of 60 kgm2. The rotor is supported on isotropic bearings, which are 1 m apart, with stiffnesses in both the horizontal and vertical directions of 4 MN/m. Determine the natural frequencies of the machine at 6000 rev/min.

Fig. 3 Q 4. The rigid rotor shown in Figure 4 is 0.5m long. It is carried by a rigidly supported short, selfaligning bearing at its left end and a flexibly supported short, self-aligning bearing at its right end. The rotor has a polar moment of inertia, Ip, of 0.8 kgm2 and a diametral moment of inertia about the left end, Id1, of 12 kgm2. Find roots and hence the natural frequencies of the system when it is stationary and when it is rotating at 3000 and 10000 rev/min for following cases:

(a) The bearing support stiffness, k, is 1MN/m in both the x and y directions (that is kx = ky = k). (b) The bearing support stiffness at the right end is 1MN/m the y direction and 1.3MN/m in the x directions.
