Unless one is wealthy there is no use in being a charming fellow. The poor should be
practical and ordinary. It is better to have plenty of money than to be attractive. Hughie did not
realize that. Hughie Erskine was wonderfully good-looking and he was as popular with men as he
was with women. Yet he was poor.
To make matters worse, he was in love. The girl he loved was Laura Merton whose father
had told Hughie to come and see him when he had ten thousand dollars! Hughie was miserable.
He went to see his friend Trevor who was an artist. That day, Trevor was painting an old beggar,
a dried up old man with a sad expression. His clothes were all torn and full of holes and with one
hand he held a rough stick while the other held out an ancient hat for money.
The beggar looked so miserable that Hughie pitied him and felt in his pockets to see what
money he had. All he could find was a dollar and some coins. Poor old fellow, he wants it more
than I do, he thought and he slipped the dollar into the beggars hand when Trevor went out for a
short break. The old man jumped and a faint smile passed across his old lips.
That night Hughie told Trevor. I wish I could do something for the old beggar. I have got
heaps of clothes do you think he would care for any of them? His clothes are falling to pieces.
My dear fellow, that old beggar as you call him is one of the richest men in Europe. He
could buy all of London tomorrow. He has a house in every capital, has his dinner off gold plates
and can prevent Russia going to war when he wishes. The old man is Baron Hausberg. He is a
great friend of mine, buys all my pictures and asked me to paint him as a beggar. You know these
rich men!
Good heavens! I gave him a dollar! He sank into his big chair shocked and astonished.
How stupid he must think of me!
Gave him a dollar! shouted Trevor. No wonder he was so interested to know all about
you.
I am an unlucky fellow, said Hughie. The best thing I can do is go to bed. I should not
dare to show my face to anyone.
Nonsense! It shows your kindness of spirit, Trevor consoled in between laughter.
The next day, an old gentleman with gold glasses and grey hair arrived with a letter.
The Baron asked me to bring you this letter, and he gave an envelope to Hughie. On the
outside was written, A wedding present to Hughie Erskine and Laura Merton from an old
beggar, and inside was a cheque for then thousand dollars.
When they were married, the Baron made a speech at the wedding breakfast.
