graphic kerchief

Using less than one skein of fingering weight yarn and some contrasting leftovers, this little kerchief is simple and elegant. A straightforward knit, it includes some knitting techniques that an adventurous beginner would not be too intimidated by. It is perfect to show off a yarn with some variegation.

Materials
Yarn Main colour (MC) approximately 360 m (400 yds) of fingering weight yarn. Sample used 0.9 skeins of The Uncommon Thread Merino Fingering in Nimbostratus Contrast colour 1 (CC 1 used for the stripes and Fair Isle detail) approximately 15 m (16.5 yds) of fingering weight yarn. Sample used 0.04 skeins of The Plucky Knitter Primo Fingering in Dandy Lion. Contrast Colour 2 (CC 2 used for last stripe and bind off) approximately 15 m (16.5 yds) of fingering weight yarn. Sample used 0.04 skeins of Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light in Composition Book Grey Needles 3.75 mm (US 5) circular needle, 60 cm (24) or longer Other tapestry needle for weaving in ends, blocking wires if desired.

Gauge
23 stitches and 46 rows = 10 cm (4) in garter stitch Although gauge is not crucial for this project, it will affect the finished size and the yarn requirements.

One size: 134 cm (53) by 26 cm (10)

Directions
CO 1 st. Set up rows Row 1 kfb (WS) Row 2 k1, kfb (RS) Row 3 kfb, k to end (WS) Row 4 k2tog, k to last st, kfb (RS) Row 5 kfb, k to end (WS) Row 6 k to last st, kfb (RS) Repeat rows 3 to 6 until you have 65 sts on the needle (85 rows knit, you will end with row 5)

Stripes Change to CC1 and knit two rows in established pattern (rows 6 & 3) Change to MC, k2tog, k7, w&t, k to end. k to 8 sts past wrapped st, w&t, k to last st. Continue in this manner, not forgetting to shape the sides of your shawl by decreasing the first stich of every other RS row, until there are fewer than 8 sts left. Knit two rows in established pattern. Change to CC1 and knit two rows in established pattern (rows 4 & 5). Main Body Change to MC and knit as established until the top (increase) edge of your shawl measures 62 cm (24 ) from the second stripe, ending with a WS row. Fair Isle detail K to last 22 sts, (CC1, MC1) 6 times, k to end as established Work 3 rows in MC as established. K to last 27 sts, (CC1, MC1) 7 times, k to end as established Work 1 row in MC as established K to last 30 sts, (CC1, MC1) 8 times, k to end as established Work 1 row in MC as established K to last 33 sts, k the next 17 sts in CC1, k to end as established in MC Edge Knit as established until the top edge of your shawl measures a further 11 cm (4 ) from the end of the Fair Isle detail, ending with a RS row. Change to CC2 and knit 1 row as established. BO all stitches loosely. Finishing Weave in all ends and wet block, using blocking wires if desired.

Pattern notes
When knitting the stripes, you may wish carry the CC1 yarn on the side of your shawl by twisting the yarn as you knit the edge stitches (less weaving!) I found that to obtain the neatest finish I had to cut the CC1 yarn on every row when knitting the Fair Isle detail. When knitting the last row of the Fair Isle detail, you may wish to catch the floats of MC every few stitches to create a neat finish.
