Today’s listener might chart a
course through central Sydney,
‘visiting’ these recordings in
much the same way that one
might visit a monument or
landmark. I think of them as
‘sound marks’, in that they allow
for experiential, ‘earwitness’
encounters with the traces of a
site’s recorded geography.
While the recordings are
intended for a site-specific
encounter, they are not designed
to structure your physical
navigation of an environment.
They simply to mark a space-
time, or series of space-times.
When you listen, you’ll hear no
instructions as to which way
you should walk, or which way
you should look. You might find
yourself a bit surprised by the
sense of listening in to what
happened, right here, at another
point in time.
The recordings draw
extensively from the collections
of the Australian Broadcasting
Corporation (ABC) and the
National Film and Sound
Archive (NFSA). I gratefully
