Backfilling:

1.3.1 Backfilling shall be done with available excavated selected earth or earth brought from elsewhere, free from all roots, grass, shrubs, rank vegetation, brush wood, trees, saplings, rocks, rubbish, malba and the like. 1.3.2 Filling of earth shall be done in regular horizontal layers, each not exceeding 200 mm in depth. All lumps and clods exceeding 80 mm in any direction shall be broken. Each layer shall be watered and well compacted with power rammer or a plate compactor or a 0.5 tonne roller or other mechanical means. The top and the sides shall be neatly dressed. The Contractor shall make good all subsidence and shrinkage in the filling during execution till the completion of the work. 1.3.3 The level after backfilling shall be brought to the same level as that was existing before the excavation excepting where existing structures ( to be demolished) are located in which locations the level shall be brought to the adjacent ground level. 1.4 Disposal of surplus earth. 1.4.1 The Contractor is free, within the framework of rules and regulations of the local authorities, to deal with the surplus earth in any manner suitable to him. The Contractor may dispose off the surplus earth from the project site to a place/ places as may be permitted by the appropriate authority/ body. The transportation of the surplus earth shall be done by mechanical means only. The Contractor shall at his own cost obtain necessary clearances/ permissions statutory of otherwise needed for the purpose. 1.5 Measurements 1.5.1 Measurement for excavation shall be recorded only for the plan dimensions of the building, structure, trenches, tunnels etc. up to edges of PCC leveling course below foundations as shown on the drawings and as per IS-1200. The Contractor's rate shall be deemed to include for extra excavation required for working space and side slopes and/or benching. The length and the breadth shall be measured in meters to the nearest centimeter and the depth/ height shall be taken in meters to the nearest 5 mm and the cubical contents shall be calculated in cubic meters up to 2 places of decimal. 1.5.2 Backfilling shall not be measured and paid for separately and is deemed to be included in the rate quoted for excavation up to ground level. Disposal of surplus earth shall not be measured and paid for separately and is deemed to be included in the rate quoted for excavation. 1.5.3 Only 65 % of the rate quoted for excavation or as agreed with Project Manager shall be released on completion of excavation and the balance amount shall be released only after the completion of the backfilling over the complete area and satisfactory disposal of the surplus earth. 1.6 Rate 1.6.1 The quoted rate shall include the cost of all the labour, equipment and machineries involved in all the operations described above.
