Warren Niles Period 6 9/11/13 Modeling Osmosis MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow

when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar? HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow into the egg. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from a highly concentrated area to a lowly concentrated area. First CH3COOH or vinegar dissolves the eggshell made of calcium bicarbonate or CaCo3. This will allow water to flow into the egg from the vinegar. Since vinegar is 95% water and the egg is 75% water, due to the rules of osmosis the water from the highly concentrated area, Vinegar, to the lowly concentrated area, the egg, and the water level with decrease and the size of the egg will increase. That is why water will flow into the egg. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 14.5 LIQUID LEVEL (Ml) 290 OBSERVATIONS The water increased by 40 ml. The vinegar amino acid activated a chemical reaction with the calcium Yellow slimy and eggshell dissolved. Yellow Slimy, grew in size and when you shake it you can feel the yolk.

Warren Niles Period 6 9/11/13 Modeling Osmosis CONCLUSION In this lab, we, Group 4, studied the effect of water flowing from an area of high concentration to a area of lo concentration across the selectively permeable membrane, or commonly known as Osmosis. In this lab, the water in the vinegar (CH3COOH), 95% water, flowed into the egg, 74% water. In my group, Group 4, our egg expanded 1.8 cm. This is 0.8 cm less than the class average for 6. My hypothesis stated that the water would flow from the vinegar to the egg. My hypothesis was correct. ANALYSIS In this lab first, CH3COOH or vinegar dissolves the eggshell made of calcium bicarbonate or CaCo3. The amino acid in the vinegar dissolved the eggs shell. The calcium bicarbonate molecules broke down and as a byproduct produce calcium ions and carbon dioxide or CO2. This chemical reaction that dissolved the shell allowed the water to flow into the egg from the vinegar. Since vinegar is 95% water and the egg is 75% water, due to the rules of osmosis the water from the area of high concentration, vinegar, moved to the area of low concentration, the egg, and the water level with decrease and the size of the egg will increase. My groups eggs circumference expanded by 1.8 cm in diameter. This is 0.8 cm less than the class average. Period 7s average was 2.4. I think this is because their egg was allowed to sit for longer and was diffusing excess water.
