University of Greenwich E-LEARNING STRATEGY

1. Definition and A roach

The University defines e-learning as: the use of information and communications technology to provide a range of approaches to enhance and extend learning for a wide range of individuals and groups. The University seeks to support the development of e-learning and to embed this into its learning and teaching policy and practice to support students and improve the management of learning. It acknowledges, however, that chools and disciplines have different needs and re!uirements in the use of new technology and that diversity of approach, technologies, assumptions and values should be supported within the conte"t of clearly defined ob#ectives and overall targets. The University recognises that: one si$e does not fit all technologies need to be matched to pedagogical intentions and learners% diverse needs any strategy needs to be fle"ible and responsive to changing needs, priorities and emerging technologies.

!. "ode# for e-#earnin$ The University has adopted cribbens and &owell%s '())*+ model of e-learning, the elearning fan%, which portrays a range of possibilities for e"ploiting technology, from its use in supporting traditional classroom-based teaching through to wholly remote anytime, any place learning. The adoption of this fle"ible model develops the University%s current emphasis on blended learning as outlined in its -earning and Teaching trategy.

1ll chools and staff will be e"pected to consider the fan and debate where their focus in programmes and courses should lie across the full range of possibilities. The preferred segment is likely to be 2lended -earning% where the use of technology is strategically and sympathetically combined with !uality face to face encounters as part of a coherent and planned approach to supporting student learning. This builds on the University%s current view of blended learning through an enhanced emphasis on strategic and planned approaches within programmes and,or courses to develop e-learning. %. &rinci #es The University%s approach and support for the e"pansion of e-learning is guided by a number of fundamental principles: recognition of e-learning as both an enabler and enhancer of learning acknowledgement of the utility of e-learning in helping support improvements in the enhancement of learning awareness of it as a potentially cost-effective solution to supporting diverse groups of learners the importance of disseminating e"isting good practice in design for learning and the use of appropriate tools enabling all staff to participate in e-learning endorsing and supporting one principal platform '3eb 4T+5 however, a range of elearning platforms may be used by chools celebrating diversity and a variety of approaches between chools in the use and application of e-learning recognition of the key role of e-learning in enabling the University to achieve and sustain its competitive advantage

identifying the University by its on-line presence

Underpinning these principles is a commitment to: support pro#ects that enable staff to e"periment and evaluate the use of e-learning the regular evaluation of e-learning pro#ects on the basis of robust and reliable research information enable staff to meet and share their e"perience and good practice support staff development e"amine and learn from effective practice in other institutions provide effective induction programmes for students enabling them to develop knowledge and skills in the use of e-learning effectively deploy resources to support development of e-learning encourage diversity of approach, provided it can be supported within the available resources. encourage the development of integrated systems and support

'. Strands The University%s e--earning trategy focuses on seven key strands which are broadly commensurate with the strands identified by 67847 and 9I 4. 7ach strand has an associated set of targets and actions 'see 1nne" 0+. The strands are: &edagogy, curriculum design and development -earning resources and networked learning tudent support, progression and collaboration trategic management, human resources and capacity development :uality ;esearch and evaluation Infrastructure and technical standards

7-learning and T:78 funding will be selectively employed to pump prime ob#ectives and targets with a view to developing a sustainable approach to the use of e-learning on University programmes. The effective implementation of the strands will be supported through the establishment of an e-learning forum incorporating both face to face and electronic events and a good practice website. (. 7ach chool will be re!uired to articulate an e-learning strategy that contributes to the achievement of the broad University targets and ob#ectives. The strategy should outline how the chool will employ e-learning across the range of teaching and learning activities. ;esponsibility for developing the chool strategy rests with the 6ead of chool and the coordination of the strategy with the chool <irector of -earning and :uality. <evelopment in e-learning will be reported through each chool%s 1nnual ;eporting and &lanning <ocument '1;&<+ and will be a focus, as appropriate, in chool and,or <epartmental reviews. The University will, through T:78 funding, support a small number of pro#ects annually to provide development support for e-learning. &ro#ects will underpin key ob#ectives of the strands. There will be a ma#or emphasis on scalability, transferability and sustainability of pro#ects. &ro#ects will be approved by the cross- chool and =ffice e--earning 3orking >roup and will be supervised by an e--earning ?anagement >roup. 1n e--earning 8orum will be established to encourage the sharing of good practice, and the annual e--earning 4onference will support both mutual e"change across the sector and internal and e"ternal dissemination of good practice.
