Principals Column
Is it Spring yet? Not according to the weather we have had this week. Brrrrr! I believe last weekend was just a tease. Hopefully with Daylight Savings Time we will finally get our Spring temperatures. Speaking of Daylight Savings Time, dont forget to set you clocks ahead one hour on Saturday night. With all of our inclement weather this winter, I have not had a chance to announce our new Teacher of the Year and our Support Employee of the Year. Join me in congratulating Mrs. Sharon Matney, Media Specialist, as our Teacher of the Year, and Mrs. Kim Echerer, School Nurse, as our Support Employee of the Year. Both these ladies do a marvelous job taking care of our students and faculty. We are so fortunate to have them at Lake Murray. This weekend LMES has 3 relay teams participating in the Columbia Marathon! Each team will compete in a half marathon (13.1 miles) relay. The 4 member teams will have 2 participants run an 8 mile leg while the remaining participants run a 5 mile leg. We are so proud of our runners! Go TEAM LMES! Next week is our Hoops for Heart event. Mrs. Plemmons and Mr. Nellems are in need of some parent volunteers. Please check out the information and volunteer form on pages 4 & 5. There is a lot of other very important information in this issue of the Paw Print. Please take time to review the newsletter carefully so you dont miss any special opportunities. Enjoy your weekend!

PASS Writing Assessment March 18 & 19

All 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students will take our state assessment of writing, the Palmetto Assessment of State Standards (PASS), on March 18 and 19, 2014. Please note the following: Students should be in class no later than 7:45. Testing will begin at 8 a.m. Students will not be allowed into the testing session once it has begun. PASS is an untimed test. Please do not plan to sign your child out of school for any reason until after 12 noon on testing dates. Doctors appointments and other out-of-school functions should not be scheduled during testing hours. Students may not bring into the testing location any electronic device that can be used for communicating, timing, or imaging. These include but are not limited to cell phones, gaming devices, ereaders, and cameras. If a student has one of these devices in the testing location, it will be collected and taken to the school test coordinator and returned after testing is completed in his/her class for the day. Here are tips for helping your child with test preparation. Encourage your child to do his/her best but do not place too much emphasis on your childs test scores. Extra pressure can upset your child and influence test performance. Make sure your child gets adequate sleep. A tired child is less able to pay attention or handle the demands of testing. Give your child well-balanced meals. Rest, exercise, and eating well are important for test-taking.

Topics include new features in the World Book and PebbleGo research databases, the SC Book Award winners, Read Across America, March book lists, and more! Click the link https:// www.smore.com/g6zj or scan the QR code to access the newsletter.

The Media Center is having a Box Tops for Shamrocks contest March 3-14. Send in your Box Tops for Education labels now, now and the grade level that brings in the most will win a treat!

Tuesday, March 11 During Related Arts Time

LMES will be conducting their 15th annual event to support the American Heart Association. The event this year will add basketball skills to the jumping rope activities. Every student will enjoy the Hoops For Heart event. They will celebrate having a healthy heart and school community. Many other students in the school will go the extra mile. They will collect donations to support the American Heart Association mission to help fight heart disease. Donation forms were sent home last week. If you need another form you can find them outside the gym door. Donations are due on Hoops For Heart day, Tuesday, March 11. In addition to the traditional Thank You gifts, this year students can earn ducks. Ducks are given to students after they raise their first $5 donation. After they have collected the $5 parents will fill out the coupon on the collection envelope. Students will bring the voucher to the gym and receive their first duck immediately. Students who create a webpage at www.heart.org/jump and collect their first donation will receive the Quacky duck and the Nija duck. Every dollar collected goes to the AHA.
