stages which accommodate rotating impellers and
stationary bowls possessing guide vanes The dis-
charge Irom the pump unit is co-axial with the shaIt
and the pump unit is suspended by the column pipe
containing a system oI vertical shaIting Ior transmu-
ting power to the impellers, the prime-mover being
external to the Ilow stream A typical vertical line
shaIt pump consists oI three elements as Iollows.
a) Bowl Assemblv This is either a single or
multi-stage centriIugal type vertical assembly
with discharge co-axial with me shaIt. The
bowl assembly consists oI rotating impellers,
which are housed in stationary bowls having
guide vanes

Fig. 5 shall be used by assuming the losses equal to
those indicated on the chart Ior shaIt enclosing tube oI
a size that shall normally close the open line shaIt in
question.
11.2 Discharge Head Loss
The discharge at loss head chart (Fig. 6) shall be used

14 PUMP TEST
14.1 Performance Test
14.1.1 The expected Iield perIormance oI the pump may
be obtained by testing the bowl assembly in the laboratory
and then calculating the required perIormance (see Fig.
10) A typical laboratory test set up as shown in Fig. 11.
14.2 Laboratory Tests
As Iar as possible, Iull load and Iull speed tests shall
be conducted. However, laboratory test at reduced
speed and reduced stages shall be according to
IS 5120 : 1977.
14.2.1 Sampling
The sampling plan as given in IS 10572 :1983 shall be
Iollowed.
14.3 Field Tests
A Iield test gives an indication oI the overall perIorm-
ance oI a pump when it is operating under actual Iield
conditions. Field tests are sometimes used as accep-
tance test The accuracy with which Iield test be made
depends on the instruments used in the test, the proper
installation oI the instruments and the skill oI the test
personnel.
It shall be recognized that environmental conditions in
a well or the design oI a pump shall signiIicantly aIIect
Iield perIormance and also aIIect the apparent results
oI Iield test Under most conditions, it is recom-
mended that acceptance oI the pump shall be based on
tests made in laboratory.
Field test shall not be carried out until the pump has
worked Ior at least 24 hours to allow running in time Ior
the bearings
II test is to be carried out at diIIerent heads, this shall
be done by throttling the delivery valves, in this case
delivery valve be placed aIter the minimum upstream
and down stream length as required by Ilow measuring
device. The control valve shall be at least 4 times the
diameter away Irom the discharge head elbow.
A typical diagrammatic arrangement Ior Iield test is
illustrated in Fig. 12. For details, reIer IS 9137 : 1978.
14.3.1 Speed
The rotating speed oI pump shall be measured by
revolution counter or by an accurately calibrated
tachometer or by stroboscope counting slip method
14.3.2 Discharge
The discharge oI the pump shall be measured by means
oI a standard venturi tube, nozzle, oriIice plate, V-notch/
rectangular weir, pitot tube, traverse or any other recog-
nized method. The method adopted Ior discharge
measurement shall be suitable Ior the size oI pump, its
duly, and situation. The pump manuIacturer shall, iI
required give evidence oI the proper calibration oI the
apparatus used. The surIace conditions, size and length oI
15

IS 1710 : 1989
the pipe preceding and succeeding the Iluid measuring
device arc as important as the calibration oI the device
itselI and shall be taken care.
14.3.3 Net Pump Effective Head
For determining the net pump eIIective head, Iollowing
measurement shall be taken and the readings shall be
converted to datum reIerence:
a) Static water depth with pump in working
condition,
b) Delivery head, and
c) Velocity head.
14.3.3.1 Deliverv head
Dm shall be measured by means oI a calibrated
bourdan tube gauge (reading converted to meter oI
liquid) located at a distance oI 2D Irom the discharge
elbow oI the test pump (D is dia oI delivery pipe) plus
the distance Irom the datum to the centreline oI gauge
It is recommended that mercury manometers be used
in preIerence to bourdan type gauges when the head to
be measured is 7 5 m or less For precautions and
connections Ior the gauge reIer 13.8.4 oI
IS 5120 : 1977
14.3.3.2 Jelcoitv head
Velocity head shall be obtained Irom the actual measure-
ment oI the inside diameter oI the discharge pipe at the
point where the pressure tap is located (see 4.12.3).
14.3.4 Pump Output
This shall be calculated as in 4.17.2.
14.3.5 Pump Input
The power input to the pump shall be determined with a
vertical dynamometer or a calibrated electric motor. It is
generally considered impractical to attempt to measure
pump power input by means oI transmission dynamo-
meter in Iield.
14.3.6 Overall Efficiencv
When the speciIications calls Ior an overall eIIiciency
guarantee, the actual job motor shall be used without
calibration and eIIiciency calculated directly (see 4.18.3).
15 RECORDING AND COMPUTATION OF TEST
RESULTS
15.1 All instruments test readings as well as corrected
readings shall be recorded on the test sheet Complete
data concerning the pump driver and instrument
identiIication shall also be recorded.
