First Sunday in Lent Meditation: The very first question Christians have historically been asked, from the earliest forms of baptismal covenants to the present, is: Do you renounce Satan and all his works? (Some third- and fourth-century versions added, and all his pomps.) Though we use someone different language in our current ritual (Do you renounce the spiritual forces of wickedness, reject the evil powers of this world and repent of your sin?), the point is the same. The first Sunday in Lent is a clarion call for all present to declare renunciation of all other powers as the first act of faithfulness to the Christ who calls us to follow. Enter to Worship THE PRELUDE (Please begin to take your seats to prepare for worship) *LIGHTING OF CANDLES (Symbolizing the bringing in of the Light of Christ) *THE PRAISE MEDLEY Come, Let Us Worship and Bow Down (Hymnal, page 14) Heart of Worship (Not in Hymnal) I Love You, Lord (Hymnal, page 80) *THE INVOCATION THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION (In unison) Almighty and most merciful God, you know the thoughts of our hearts. We confess that we have sinned against you and done evil in our sight. We have transgressed your holy laws. We have disregarded your Word and Sacraments. Forgive us, O Lord. Give us grace and power to put away all hurtful things, That, being delivered from the bondage of sin, We may bring forth fruit worthy of repentance, And from henceforth may ever walk in your holy ways; Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. INDIVIDUAL CONFESSIONS (Pray in silence) THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON *HYMN The Family of God (Shake hands with those around you as the children come to the stage) #282

Warnings about the Wiles of the Devil

Welcome to Worship
elcome to New Hope Church, now into our third century serving God! If you are visiting, you will discover a loving, spirit-filled church family. Here is some helpful information as you join us in worship today: All who worship here are equals in the sight of God, regardless of race, age, gender, physical disability or religious affiliation. Communion, when celebrated, is open to all who profess Christ as Lord and Savior, whether affiliated with this church or not. Children may partake of Communion as well, if parents approve. A nursery is available during the service; please see a greeter for directions. (This is for infants and children up to 3 years of age.) Handicap-accessible restrooms are located off the narthex (main foyer) and adjacent to the entrance lobby in the Fellowship Hall/Gym. Please complete the tear-off attendance slip attached to the bulletin and drop it in the offering plate so we will have a record of your visit with us today. Thank you for remembering to silence your cell phone during the service. We ask that there be no food or beverages in the sanctuary, please. If you arrived as a visitor we hope that you leave as a friend and worship with us often! New Hope Church exists to: Glorify God in worship and rejoice in our life together; Share the Good News of the Gospel in word and deed; Reach as many as we can with the saving love of Jesus; Help each person grow toward Christian maturity, and find their place of service in the church and in the world.

Next CPWM Meeting March 29. If you are a member or regular attendee of New Hope, then you are already a member of our Cumberland Presbyterian Womens Ministry (CPWM). Come to the meetings when you can. You will grow in your faith walk and become closer to your sisters in Christ. Rotation Sunday School - All the children are split into three groups and rotate through three 20 minute classes. Ben has one group teaching them music education and Bible verses that go along with the songs they will be learning. This group meets in the sanctuary. Robbie teaches another group using crafts, games, cooking and other great adventures the kids will get excited about. They meet in the kitchen, fellowship hall or outside when it gets warmer. The last group is Brad's group where the children learn a Bible study that teaches them knowledge of God's word on their level. They meet up in the youth room. The three groups begin at 8:50 am and rotate till they finish at 9:50 am. Please be in prayer for the success of this exciting new ministry we have added to New Hope. Stephen Ministry - Got a burden? You dont have to carry that burden alone. You can have a STEPHEN MINISTER who will spend time with you, listen to you, and walk beside you. If you or someone you know is interested in receiving care through the Stephen Ministry program at New Hope, please contact the pastor through the Church office at (615) 449-7020 and request that a Stephen minister contact you.

Ministries/Activities Within Our Church

Session Meeting this Tuesday evening at 6:30 here at the church. We are asking that you begin next Sunday to bring wrapped candy and Easter Eggs for the New Hope Community Egg Hunt. We will have a box in the Narthex to put the candy and eggs in. Thanks in advance! Wednesday Prayer Meetings, the third in a series, March 12, 6:30-7:30. This series has been well attended. We have addressed many prayer concerns these past three weeks. We are open to having another three week series beginning March 19 and going through April 2. What about it? If you want to come, indicate on the sign-in sheets this Sunday. The prayer meetings are informal. We are learning some things about contemplative Bible reading - just reading and mediating and letting God speak to us through the passage. Also, learning about contemplative prayer along with praying for special needs of individuals present or not presentprayer requests are taken seriouslyand we pray for special needs regarding church activities. It seems like there is a kind of new spirit in the church coming out of the prayer meetings.

Thought for the Week

n a recent trip to Haiti, I heard a Haitian pastor illustrate to his congregation the need for total commitment to Christ. His parable: A certain man wanted to sell his house for $2,000. Another man wanted very badly to buy it, but because he was poor, he couldn't afford the full price. After much bargaining, the owner agreed to sell the house for half the original price with just one stipulation: He would retain ownership of one small nail protruding from just over the door. After several years, the original owner wanted the house back, but the new owner was unwilling to sell. So the first owner went out, found the carcass of a dead dog, and hung it from the single nail he still owned. Soon the house became unlivable, and the family was forced to sell the house to the owner of the nail. The Haitian pastor's conclusion: "If we leave the Devil with even one small peg in our life, he will return to hang his rotting garbage on it, making it unfit for Christ's habitation." Dale A. Hays, Leadership, Vol X, #3 (Summer, 1989), p. 35.

Mens and Womens Ministries Grow Your Faith

New Hope is seeking to grow the Womens Small Group based on the Cumberland Presbyterian Womens Ministry (CPWM). Elder Mary Thompson has been organizing this. Our purpose will be to accept and share the love and joy of Jesus Christ through the ministry of women in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. We seek to do this as we pray, study God's Word, and reach out to others through mission, service, encouragement and fellowship. This goal will be accomplished through a diversity of ministries. CPWM is an opportunity for the women in our congregation to fellowship, share devotional time, minister to the community and grow in grace as Christians. All women in the church are members and are a part of the larger Womens Ministry in the denomination. Ladies, please let us know if you would be interested in this ministry and what time would be better for you by completing the tearoff portion of todays bulletin. As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. - Proverbs 27:17 We will plan for our first meeting in the middle of March. New Hope is seeking men interested in forming a vibrant Mens Ministry within the church. The Men's Ministry will be a time for men to come together for fellowship, support and building relationships as we go through our Christian journey. We will discuss ways to help with needs inside and outside our church, whether through handyman type projects or whatever needs may arise. We will become the focal planning team for events that the men organize such as the Mothers Day Brunch and Valentines banquet. Church buildings and grounds maintenance (mowing) will also be a focus. Most importantly, through this ministry, we can build on having a better relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ. Men, if you are interested in strengthening your walk with Christ, please let us know your level of interest in this ministry by completing the tear-off portion of todays bulletin.

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 All this I will give you, he said, if you will bow down and worship me. 10 Jesus said to him, Away from me, Satan! For it is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.[e] 11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him. Footnotes: a. The Gospel Lesson

Matthew 4:1-11 New International Version (NIV) Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness 4 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted[a] by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread. 4 Jesus answered, It is written: Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.[b] 5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 If you are the Son of God, he said, throw yourself down. For it is written: He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.[c] 7 Jesus answered him, It is also written: Do not put the Lord your God to the test.[d]
