INTRODUCTION

Pallivasal Power Plant is the first Power Project in Kerala. It was inaugurated in 1940. Though it was started as a 200 kw installation in 1928 ! the Kannan "evan #ill Produce $o.% it was u&graded to large scale &lant later to 'eet the increased de'and for &ower in Kerala. (t the inlet of the tur ine% water flow is controlled ! a 'echanical s!ste' consisting of inlet s&herical valve having a 'aintenance seal and service seal. The governor s!ste' consisting of h!draulic controls is regulated ! an o&erator interface through 4$("( 54u&ervisor! $ontrol (nd "ata (c2uisition6. It is a P$ ased Intouch 4oftware which &rovides auto'ated 'eans to control the h!droelectric &lant. 7enerators used are self e1cited ones with rushless e1citations. This consists of &ower diode rectifiers &roviding flu1 for the alternators. 8nce s!nchroni/ing s&eed is achieved the generator fre2uenc!% voltage% 'ust 'atch that of the electrical distri ution s!ste'% the &rocess is called s!nchroni/ation. 8nce

s!nchroni/ed the 'ain circuit reakers closes connecting the generator to the electric s!ste'. The installed ca&acit! of the &lant is .-.* +,. 9ut all the generators are not run at all the ti'es and the desired generators are run as &er the load conditions. ,ater is su&&lied to the Pallivasal injectors through an inlet &i&e connected to the e1isting &enstock. 9etween the injector and inlet &i&e an inlet s&herical valve is used to isolate the unit and even to sto& it for e'ergenc! shutdown. Pallivasal characteristics resulted in the selection of hori/ontal a1is Pelton runner% having 20 uckets for generators 1 to . and seventeen uckets for generators 4 to ).
