Malaysian jet maaring bumwelta
“We are trying to make sense of this,” aniya. “The military radar indicated that the aircraft may have made a turn back and in some parts, this was corroborated by civilian radar.” Samantala, kinikilala ng mga opisyal ang mula dalawa hanggang apat na pasahero na gumamit ng nakaw na pasaporte. The Binibining Pilipinas pageant presented this year’s candidates to local media recently at the Luzon Ballroom of Hotel Sofitel in Pasay City. The girls are vying for the chance to become the country’s representatives to four tilts: Miss Universe, Miss International, Miss Supranational and Miss Tourism Queen International. Last year’s winners reaped honors. Mutya Johanna Datul, in Belarus, became the Philippines’ first Miss Supranational; Bea Rose Santiago bagged the country’s fifth Miss International crown in Japan. Ariella Arida placed fourth in the Miss Universe pageant in Russia and Joanna Cindy Miranda cracked the Top 10 in the Miss Tourism Queen International in China. Earlier winners likewise registered impressive finishes. Venus Raj placed fifth in Miss Universe 2010, Shamcey Supsup was fourth in 2011 and Janine Tugonon finished second in 2012. Elaine Kaye Moll placed fourth in Miss Supranational 2012.

Competitive stunners
“This is an amazing batch,” exclaimed Arida, “all beautiful and competitive.” Datul added, “And all wellprepared.” Miranda finds the search for her successor exciting. “They are stunning,” she said. The former titleholders noted that the competition has leveled up. “I can see that they trained for the international stage,” Raj told the INQUIRER. “Had I competed with them, I probably wouldn’t stand a chance,” said 2005 Miss International Precious

YVETHE Marie Santiago
Lara Quigaman. This batch includes returning runners-up Pia Wurtzbach (2013) and Mary Jean Lastimosa (2011); and former semifinalists Diana Arevalo (2009, 2011), Parul Shah (2013) and Ellore Noelle Punzalan (2013). There are former winners from rival pageants—2013 Miss Philippines-Air Kimverlyn Suiza, 2010 Mutya ng Pilipinas-Intercontinental Carla Lizardo, 2012 Mutya ng Pilipinas 1st runner up Emma Tiglao and 2012 Miss Tourism World-Philippines Joy Marie Gangan. Reigning Reyna ng Bulacan Vessica Sambo, 2012 Miss Bicolandia Yvethe Marie Santiago and 2009 Miss Cebu Kris Tiffany Janson are also competing. Pageant rookies Mary Anne Bianca Guidotti, Joy Antonette Diaz and Laura Lehman have caught the attention of many pageant observers. THE PHILIPPINE DAILY INQUIRER is a media partner of the 2014 Bb. Pilipinas pageant, which marks its 50th anniversary this year.

Miss U in the panel
Four national titles—Miss Universe-Philippines, Bb. Pilipinas-International, Bb. Pilipinas-Supranational and Bb. Pilipinas-Tourism—will be awarded during coronation night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on March 30. The rites will be graced by three reigning international titlists—Santiago, Datul and 2013 Miss Universe Maria Gabriella Isler from Venezuela (who will sit in the judges’ panel). BPCI also said Russian musician Emin, featured in last year’s Miss Universe pageant, will perform a musical number in the 2014 Bb. Pilipinas coronation program, to be aired by ABS-CBN. ‘Slaughter, Lassiter isnabero, sibakin’
DAHIL sa pagtanggi nilang maglaro sa pambansang koponan, nanawagan ang isang mambabatas na tanggalan ng lisensya sina Barangay Ginebra center Greg Slaughter at San Miguel player Marcio Lassiter.
“The Games and Amusement Board should not issue license to play to those PBA players who were selected to play for the Philippine team but refused to join and play, invoking flimsy reasons,” ani Cavite Rep. Elpidio Barzaga, pinuno ng House committee on games and amusement. Dagdag ni Barzaga, “On account of their popularity and glamorous standing, there are some PBA players who conveniently forget that service to country like carrying the Philippine colors in the forthcoming Fiba championship in Spain scheduled in August this year. “They should be reminded that professional basketball is subject to regulation by the state and disservice to the country would be a valid ground for the government not to issue a license to them to play in the PBA.” Naglaro noon sina Slaughter at Lassiter sa Gilas bago pumasok sa PBA pero ayaw na bumalik sa pambansang koponan dahil hindi umano nila gustong agawin ang puwesto ng mga manlalarong kasama sa nag-qualify para sa Fiba championship. Tobias Harris scored 23 points, Nikola Vucevic added 19 points and 13 rebounds, and Arron Afflalo had 17 points for Orlando (19-45), who were swept in the season series. Ginobili lured E’Twaun Moore into hitting his right triceps, as he rose for an off-balance, fallaway, 14-foot jumper. The Argentine guard made the free throw to complete the threepoint play and give San Antonio a 114-104 lead with 2:34 remaining. Inquirer wires

POC eyes 20 athletes to Youth Olympics
By June Navarro
LEFT without a medal in the previous edition, the Philippine Olympic Committee hopes to field 20 athletes in 13 of 28 sports in the coming Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Nanjing, China. Only archers Luis Gabriel Moreno and Bianca Roxas-Gotuaco and golfers Princess Superal and Mia Legaspi have already qualified for the delegation. Jonne Go, the country’s chef de mission to the YOG, said she is confident more entries will make it to the competition for athletes 18 years and younger set from Aug. 16 to 28. Go is hoping that six more qualifiers from taekwondo, four from boxing, the 3-on-3 basketball team, two each from athletics, swimming and gymnastics and one each from triathlon, fencing, judo and BMX cycling will make the YOG grade.
