300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE
More abs, action and
atrocious one-liners: the
300 sequel is everything
you wanted and gore. Set
before, during and after
the events of the 2006
blockbuster, 300: Rise of an
Empire follows Gerard Butler
lookalike, Aussie Sullivan
Stapleton, as he takes on
the Persians in the Battle of
Salamis (true story).
Although missing Zack
Snyders directorial
presence (he stays on as
writer/producer), the sequel
retains a lot of its stylistic
elements as you can see
from the promotion material:
over saturated colours,
ramping (fast/slow motion)
while also incorporating
a few real life set pieces.
But with a cameraman and
unknown director Noam
Murro in the hot seat, it
seems to have lost a lot
of the original fnesse that
Snyder so expertly captures
in all his flms.
Stapleton gets his big
break as our protagonist,
but undoubtedly has big
sandals to fll in Butlers
absence. He tries, and does
a fne job (a mighty fne
one, look at those abs and
arms!), but the power and
gusto of Butlers presence is
felt and makes the moments
of ridiculously even more
unbelievable. Theres no
this is Sparta moment.
New addition Eva Green
reps for the girls as
Artemisia and defnitely
shows up the boys,
proving to be more than
eye candy as she hacks
her way through one body
after another.
Missing a lot of the original
elements that made the
frst so successful, it was
always going to be a hard
act to follow, but at least
300: Rise of an Empire is
an entertaining and thrilling
watch for fans of sword
and sandals action, while
returning characters further
enrich the historically-
based tale. Popcorn fodder
at its best.

M
NO MYTHOLOGIES TO FOLLOW
The mysterious foreign girl.
Sultry, multi-tracked vocals
among synths and beats.
A weird ass name. In other
words, when it rains, it
pours. This is the debut
album from Karen Marie
rsted, a stoned-looking,
pony-tailed Dane set
upon becoming the latest
electro-pop doll. Theres
been career momentum
since 2012 for M, and for
the big unveiling, rsted
has forged a very current
hybrid of Grimes/Lorde/
Florence material which
is unfortunately quite
forgettable, only because
its been done again and
again. Fire Rides is 2014
fller, a Cherry Ripe for the
George FM Favourites
playlist. Rhetorical turds
like What am I to do in the
city, if I cant have it all and
I just wanna feel pretty
make Mythologies seem a
bit hollow and uninspired.
The Diplo co-lab XXX 88
is a phoned in paycheque.
Decidedly, not everything
is empty. Slow Love
and Glass deliver some
great vibes, with delicate,
crystal-clear production
from kinsman Ronni
Vandahl complimenting
rsteds ghostly wail. The
closing Glass sounds
like a warped Christmas
carol, also portraying
the quirkiness that could
eventually separate her
from the pack. But its all
begging to be remixed and
dub-stepped on. Listen, in
no way am I bashing Ms
vision. Its just too of the
moment like nu-rave
was in 2008. Basically,
rsted needs to carve
her own path, instead of
riding on the coattails of
others. Overall, theres
promise written all over
No Mythologies To Follow,
but the substance is
dangerously low.

TXK
PLAYSTATION VITA
TxK, if youve never heard
of it, is the latest iteration
of an ancient videogame
called Tempest. Created in
1981 by a man called Dave
Theurer, the general gist of
proceedings remains largely
the same today as it was
more than 30 years ago;
you control a spaceship
that rides the top of a tube
and must destroy all of the
attacking aliens before they
climb the walls of the tube
where they can reach (and
therefore kill) you.
Its like a typical side-
scrolling shooter in a lot of
ways, but the playfelds
been warped around a
bit and your perspective
is looking into the level
(instead of alongside of it).
If youre thinking old
school, youre on the right
track; TxK is very faithful
to the core of the original
experience, and is right
inline with Jeff Minters
Tempest 2000 - a version
of the game created for
the Atari Jaguar in 1994.
The fact that its extremely
similar to Tempest 2000
isnt a fuke; Jeff Minters at
the helm of this game, and
fans of Tempest 2000 will
feel right at home.
The structure of the game
MAX: CURSE OF
BROTHERHOOD
XBOX ONE
Max: The Curse of
Brotherhood isnt a massive,
big-budget extravaganza,
which new owners of
Microsofts fancy box might
be hanging out for, but it
does offer an innovative
and visually captivating
experience for a relatively
decent price tag.
This Xbox Live
downloadable platformer
is a sequel to Max and
the Magic Marker, which
appeared on WiiWare, PSN,
and mobile platforms back
in 2010. While you still play
as the titular character
Max, the massive facelift in
the graphics department
makes The Curse of the
Brotherhood feel like a
completely different game.
The gameplay mechanics
have also evolved
dramatically.
In the game, our hero
Max has an annoying little
brother named Felix -
who looks like the creepy
love-child of Harry Potter
and Ron Weasley. Like all
siblings do, Max wishes his
tedious bro would just go
away. After searching for
ways to get rid of him on
the Internet, Max stumbles
across an evil spell,
which opens up a portal -
releasing a monstrous claw
that grabs little Felix and
traps him in a treacherous
magical place called
Anotherland. Naturally, Max
feels pretty guilty about
banishing his own fesh and
is simple enough to let you
grasp the core mechanics
very quickly, yet so well-
designed that even hours
later youll be discovering
nuances in the way you can
leverage those gameplay
systems to get a little
further, score a little higher,
or just do something truly
crazy-awesome without
the confnes of the systems
Jeffs designed.
Visually, TxK is a treat; sure,
its not exactly pushing the
Vita in terms of detailed
textures and so on, but
its crazy-bright, very fast-
moving, and it all cranks
along at 60 frames a second
- all while delivering killer
retro-inspired electronica
straight to your brain
(wearing headphones is
highly recommended).
If you like the sound of a
retro-inspired shooter, want
a massive nostalgia hit, or
just want to have a lot of
fun with your Vita, TxK is a
no-brainer purchase. With
its power-ups, fashy visuals,
and perky music, youll be
whipped back to a time
before narrative and other
complex motivations were
required of games and fun
was enough. Buy it (its only
$13.25); TxK alone is reason
enough to own a Vita.
ALAN BELL
blood, and tears in after him
armed with nothing but his
trusty marker pen.
The young boys imagination
and creativity are captured
beautifully in Max: The
Curse of Brotherhood.
The game is a 3D, side-
scrolling platformer with
numerous puzzle solving
components throughout.
As you would expect, you
navigate Max from left to
right, jumping, climbing,
and dodging danger along
the way. However, your
magical marker pen also
allows you to manipulate
the environment, creating
platforms, moving objects,
and drawing ropes to grab
to avoid certain death.
The visuals in the game
are amazing, featuring
stunning lighting and depth
across a variety of different
environments - ranging from
fery lava pits to lush jungles
and dim cavernous tunnels.
The basic movement (non-
drawing), controls are
polished and the character
animations are highly
detailed, from Max himself
right through to some of
the nightmarish creatures
chasing him. The fnal boss
battle is also a real highlight
and a worthwhile reason to
persist with the game right
to the end.
Max: The Curse of the
Brotherhood offers a decent
amount of entertainment
for the price-tag and could
appeal to fans of games like
Limbo (including the similar,
dark, horror-like themes).

I frst heard Joan Wassers soulful,
melancholic torch songs when Manu
Taylor played her debut album Real Life
on Linda Clarkes Nine to Noon show
on National Radio. That album was her
frst under the brand but it defnitely
wasnt a green effort.
The Maine-born singer started out
as a classical violinist in the Boston
University Symphony Orchestra before
playing in more raucous outfts including
The Dam Builders. She did time on
Antony and The Jonhsons Mercury
Prize-winning I am A Bird Now, toured
in Rufus Wainwrights band, suffered
the loss of her mother to cancer and
of her boyfriend, Jeff Buckley, in 1997,
when he drowned in the Tennessee
river. Those last two events informed
her most cathartic work To Survive,
which set her up as a diva of pain.
I guess it did, she agrees, on the
phone from her Brooklyn home,
Today, though, Im in the best place
Ive ever been in. Im happier, more
positive. And with her fourth album
The Classic, shes out to prove it. She
tells me it was intentional to build on the
creative impetus and success of 2011s
The Deep Field, which was a more
intimate, elemental and uplifting brand
of soul. Her new album kicks off with
Witness, a full-on soul revival imitation
of the Supremes at their career best. I
wasnt intentionally trying to be like the
girl bands, but it helps. That music is so
uplifting and positive. This theme leads
on later to the title track, which Joan
refers to as a classic Motown tune,
its all the elements I love in that music.
Harmony; a little melancholy; big,
sweeping chords. But I wrote it (The
Classic), as an old school girl-group
doo-wop song. The words are like
those of Marvin Gaye or Stevie Wonder.
Oh I love his tune Joy Inside My Tears.
It was intentional that at the end of the
song Im spelling out the songs name
- like Aretha (R-E-S-P-E-C-T!). But
the most telling part of her new mood
is in the beginning of the song which
declares I am home in your arms. Its
an expression of comfort, jubilation.
Youre right, I still include melancholy,
its still part of my life, but its no longer
sapping all my energy.
Liam Finn recently told me about
his nocturnal inspirations during his
time in New York, as the city grew
and evolved around him during the
recording process. It appeared in his
work like another instrument. Mmm,
for me not so much an instrument,
but an ORCHESTRA, she declares in
verbal capitals. Her home, Brooklyn,
in particular, appears through the
lyrics of Witness, where theres clear
reference to a pile driver, a shoe and a
constant nagging internal conversation
of self-doubt and self-deprecation. I
tell myself these little stories and end
up [convincing] myself that something
wont work out. Brooklyn the place
is constantly reinventing itself. Theres
building and road works starting at
7AM everyday. The pile drivers start up.
My neighbours china and pictures are
falling off the walls. The sound creeps
into my dreams. I cant tell whats real
at that time of the morning. It was a
good (metaphor). The resulting lyric
embodies that sentiment: I will crack
the motor/Jam my stiletto into that
machine/Yeah I took the power/Got to
kick myself out of the dream. It really
is a symbolic account of what Ive been
doing all these years.
Joan tells me this album is a steadfast
attack on my own self-destruction.
It sweeps around the sassiness of
Diana Ross, The Vandellas, hints of
Bond-era Shirley Bassey and breaths
of my inner Barry White, with less
pounds I hope. Nowhere is that more
obvious than on track two, and the
main single, Holy City, which was
loosely based on a visit to the Wailing
Wall and possibly too many late nights
watching Starsky & Hutch or Bullet.
The albums littered with brassy stabs,
fuzzy-bear guitars and waaa-waaas. It
also includes a cameo from comedian
and fellow Brooklynite Reggie Watts,
who appears on Holy City in his
human beatbox mode and on The
Classic as an extra from Sha na na.
Getting Watts was a nice coup,
notes Joan. I have admired his work
for ages. I saw him on a TV show and
thought, Ill email him and invite him to
appear on a song. I thought, thisll take
ages. I felt like a stalker or a groupie.
But, she giggles in embarrassment, A
reply came back in under half an hour -
yes, hell do it! Yay!
Joan digs her deepest with Good
Together, the track that is most like
her old self. You asked why I state
I dont want to be nostalgic in a
song thats all about digging up the
past. This is not really like that. Like in
Shame Im exorcising demons, and
its good to do that sometimes. I tackle
Shame like the way people take on
their fears, banishing what holds you
back - grieving for a lost relationship,
feeling upset for past acts and
problems. Joans over it, clearly, and
her resulting ffth album she believes
is the embodiment of her efforts to
face and resolve all personal issues,
and in so doing reject her penchant
for melancholic disposition. Nowadays
shes got a passion for life and its
starting to show through the cracks.

If Elbows last album Build A Rocket
Boys was about nostalgia, the
Manchester bands sixth record The
Take Off And Landing Of Everything is
about fresh starts.
Following the end of his long-term
relationship with writer Emma Jane
Unsworth, singer and lyricist Guy
Garvey found himself spending a lot of
time in New York and for the frst time in
his career, inspired by a new place.
Sat drinking a pint of bitter in his local
pub near to the bands Blueprint
Studios in Salford, Manchester, Garvey
says, There has always been a love
song to Manchester on every album,
but I really do love it in New York. I went
there when my relationship was coming
to an end and it inspired a lot of the
writing on the new album.
Loving the anonymity of the Big
Apple, Garvey spent time sat in cafes,
observing peoples lives and listening in
to their conversations.
The band arent huge out there, he
says. In fact no one bats an eyelid. Its
lovely to be anonymous. Dont get me
wrong, I like the other side of success
too, but not all the time. Its great to
have the best of both worlds.
One of his trips to New York inspired
the albums standout song New York
Morning which includes the line, Its the
modern Rome and folk are nice to Yoko.
Its a lyric thats already been called the
best line in years by Coldplays Chris
Martin in a text to Garvey.
I was jet-lagged and went out onto
the streets where The Moonstruck
Diner where the Cher and Nicolas Cage
flm Moonstruck was flmed, explains
Garvey, I was sat there watching the
morning and writing about the energy of
the morning.
And I was excited by what I was writing
and thats when I came up with the line.
Yoko is so respected in New York but
the Brits were awful to her. I was thinking
about that and pictures of her and John
Lennon that are on every market stall
and in all the gift shops. They had to
leave Britain and thats a shame.
Garveys lyrics have earned him the
title of a modern day poet which he is
quick to laugh off.
Its absurd, he says shaking his head.
I would never consider myself a poet
as Im friends with Simon Armitage, who
is one our greatest poets, though even
he doesnt like being called a poet. I just
try my best but if you want to look at
real modern day poets then look at Alex
Turners lyrics. The lad is a genius.
Garvey says hes a huge fan of Turner
and his band and salutes the Arctic
Monkeys for being the best rock and
roll band of this age.
I worked with them last year when
they headlined Glastonbury Festival,
he says. I did their strings for them so
Im really proud of that band. Alex is a
real talent and Im glad hes grown into
his own and is being recognised around
the world for being great.
Its been a rollercoaster ride of a career
for Elbow, whose frst album Asleep In
The Back was released back in 2001.
They lost two record deals then came
back to win the UKs coveted Mercury
Music Prize in 2008 for their album
Seldom Seen Kid.
But Garvey reckons The Take Off And
Landing Of Everything beats anything
theyve released before.
I know all bands think that but its
true, he says. Weve worked so
hard on this and tracks on The Take
Off And Landing Of Everything like
Charge, My Sad Captains and The
Blanket of Night are really up there
with our best songs.
And Garvey says this new chapter for
the band is cemented by the fact the
fve - Garvey, drummer Richard Jupp,
bassist Pete Turner, Guitarist Mark Potter
and his keyboard and producer brother
Craig Potter - are closer than ever.
There arent any egos in Elbow. No
one is the leader and we all have as
equally important roles. We are equals
from the decisions we make to how the
royalties are split, which is fve ways.
It would never work if anything wasnt
equal. Weve grown up together and
been friends since we were knee high.
We all have our individual strengths -
Craig is the producer whizz and the
lads leave me alone to my lyrics. When
we do fall out, its hardly anything
serious. Weve always been the same
gang and always will be.
Getting that second chance meant
everything to us. As much now as back
then so well never take it for granted.
What is different this time is that the
entire band loves every song on the
record. Thats never happened before.
There has always been one of us that
doesnt like one and theyve had to be
voted down. If thats not a fresh start for
Elbow then I dont know what is.
