115AL PRE-LAB GUIDELINES

TA. MOHAMED MOHAMED

Introduction
This document shows what you should do in the prelab and what you should skip or simplify. As a general rule, if a part of the prelab is not mentioned here, this means you have to do it as required in the lab manual.

Pre-lab 1
Part 1
Just roughly sketch the IV characteristics of a diode.

Part II
Do 1, ignore 2, and in 3 just draw the curve.

Part III
1. Do it for the ve voltage only. 2. Yes, it is as easy as you think. 3. Do it all.

Parts IV and V are cancelled.

Pre-lab 2
Parts I and II are cancelled Part III
Do it all. If you didnt study the op-amp operation before, you can read about it in your 115A text book, or you can google it.

Part IV
1. Use the notes of the bistable circuit (posted on eeweb). 2. Solve it without R2 only. But try to answer the question about the use of R2. 3. You will be able to solve it after the lab session.

Pre-lab 3
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Solve it. Solve it except (f) and (g). Just a sketch. The required is Ic-Vce curve, you can do it Ignore this one.

6. Do it. 7. Solve it

Pre-lab 4
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Do it. Just a sketch, no need for the given numbers. Do it. Do it. Do it. Do it.

Pre-lab 5
Part I
1. Assume Vbe = 0.7 2. Solve it. 3. Use RB of (1)

Part II
In this part, if you need the value of , assume it is 100. The better is to use the of the transistor that you used in the lab (you dont need to calculate values before the lab). 1. Ignore IB 2. Ignore IB 3. Try your best; you will know the answer in the lab. 4. Think about the effect of the small value of IB on the current, and the power dissipation that you need to reduce.

Part III
In this part, if you need the value of , assume it is 100. The better is to use the of the transistor that you used in the lab (you dont need to calculate values before the lab). 1. RB is R1||R2, and VB is the base voltage (ignoring IB). 2. Solve it. 3. Wait for the lab. 4. Do it. 5. Solve it. (ap = av.ai) 6. A rough sketch with no numbers.

Pre-lab 6
Part I and II
Do it all, but just ignore number (3). You can use the same notes of Pre-lab 5-III.

Pre-lab 7
This is the most important pre-lab. You have to do it yourself and finish it all before the beginning of the lab. I will not help in this; you have to do your best. The two partners (or even different groups) can work together to solve it.Use the circuit values of experiments 5 and 6 as guidelines when you lose hope. In part III, think carefully if you will use CB or not.
