OBSERVATION:

COMMUNICATION WITH EACH OTHER. IN THE BEGGING THIS COMMUNICATION
WAS IN THE FORM OF MOVEMENT OF BODY BUT AS THE MAN MAKE
PROGRESS THIS COMMUNICATION TURN INTO WORDS. TODAY WE SEE IN THE
WORLD THAT THERE ARE LOTS OF LANGUAGES IN THE WORLD USED TO
COMMUNICATE. IN OUR DAILY LIFE A MAN COMMUNICATES WITH MANY
PEOPLES, IN HIS BUSINESS, IN HIS JOB, IN HIS HOUSE, WITH HIS FRIENDS,
WITH HIS FAMILY ETC. COMMUNICATION IS ESSENTIAL NEED OF EVERY
PERSON IN HIS DAILY LIFE. SO MORE AND MORE BETTER WILL BE HIS DAILY
ROUTINE IF HE WILL COMMUNICATE IN BETTER WAY. IT WAS AN OLD ADAGE
THAT THE TONGUE OF MAN IS HIS GREATEST ENEMY. IT MEANS IF A PERSON
COMMUNICATES IN A WRONG WAY IT WILL CREATE PROBLEM FOR HIM AND
ON OTHER HAND IF A PERSON IS WITH LOT OF COMMUNICATION SKILLS AND
ADDRESS EVERYONE IN A BETTER MANNER HE CAN LEAD A HANDSOME LIFE.

A MAN IN A BUSINESS WITH NO COMMUNICATION SKILLS WILL MAKE LOSS IN


HIS BUSINESS WHILE THE SAME MAN WITH THE GOOD COMMUNICATION
SKILLS CAN ENHANCE HIS BUSINESS. IF A MAN IS IN A JOB AND HE DOES NOT
HAVE GOOD COMMUNICATION SKILLS THEN HE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO

THE GOOD COMMUNICATION SKILLS CAN MANAGE THE BARRIERS IN PROPER
WAY. IF A MAN IS IN THE FAMILY, AGAIN HE IS IN THE NEED OF GOOD
COMMUNICATION TO RUN THE FAMILY MATTERS IN A GOOD ORDER
OTHERWISE WITHOUT GOOD COMMUNICATION IT IS DIFFICULT FOR HIM TO
MANAGE THE FAMILY AFFAIRS IN A PROPER MANNER.

WHATEVER THE FIELD OF LIFE IS THE COMMUNICATION PLAYS A KEY ROLE IN


THE ONE DAY’S LIFE. OUR DAILY LIFE IS STRONGLY AFFECTED BY
COMMUNICATION SKILLS AND THE SUCCESS OF ONE PERSON IS OFTEN
ATTACHED TO HIS COMMUNICATION SKILLS. SO TO BE A SUCCESSFUL MAN IN
ROUTINE LIFE ONE MUST KNOW COMMUNICATION SKILLS.
QUESTIONNAIRE DESIGNING

To make this research we adobe different methods like observations, newspapers,


articles, interviews etc. Among all these methods the basic method on which we
conclude our results is questionnaire with the help of which we conduct survey and
calculated data.

In designing questionnaire we adobe a systematic process rather than divert


techniques. First in the questionnaire we asked about the general information about the
interviewer taker and who is giving interview e.g. name of the interviewer, his
department, his session, name of respondent, name of the institution where the survey
has been conducted.

After the general information we arranged a series of questions in a scientific manner.


Basic question is in the first then the question which is based on the first question, then
the third question which is based on second question. In this way we managed our
Performa in a arranged manner. In the last we also take suggestions of the respondents
we make our conclusion s effective. Total no of questions in our questionnaire are 18.
Questionnaire has been displayed in the Appendix.

WHY CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT?

Civil engineering is large department of the university and has a lot of males and
females students from Lahore and all over the Pakistan. Due to this reason that it has
diver type of students we take this department.

Another reason due to which we take this department is that communication skills are
taught as a subject in this department and the students can reply in a better manner to
our questions.

This department has average students so we can find what the problems faced by an
average student.
CONDUCTION OF SURVEY

Our group comprised of five members and we worked like a team. A survey of civil
department was conducted by our team. We printed the questionnaire and went student
to student to fill the questionnaire. The students of civil engineering department were
cooperative they fully respond us. Our team worked with responsibility, if any student
forgot to write something we tell him immediately and made him correct. In the field we
carefully handle the questionnaire so that no one would miss. We have 30
questionnaires in the end of survey. After survey we send these questionnaires to the
data entry section of our group. Some of our group members also conduct interviews
with the help of Audio and Video aid (cameras & mobiles).
SURVEY RESULTS
LEVEL OF COMMUNICATION:
Most of the students in civil engineering department consider that their
communication level is satisfactory. 57% students accepted that they have
satisfactory English. 17% students marked that they have good English and 17%
said that they not have good English. Only 10% students said that they have
poor English. More the students in the civil engineering department are satisfied
with their communication. Good and bad communication level is same among the
students while minimum students think that they are poor in English.

LEVEL OF ENGLISH COMMUNICATION


After the level of communication it was searched that what was the level of
communication in English among the student of civil engineering. Among the
students 14% said that they are good in English communication. 52% said that
they are only satisfied with their English communication. 20% said that their
English communication is not good. 14% told that they are poor in English
communication. So again the result is similar as concluded above.

LEVEL OF CONFIDENCE OF ENGLISH COMMUNICATION


A few people in civil engineering department consider themselves confident, only 14%
claimed that they have high confidence. 46% are satisfied with their confidence, means
they have confidence like an average student. 30% students have low level of
confidence which is very alarming that a student himself feel that he has low
confidence. 10% students fell in the category of low level confidence. A very little portion
of students is confident in civil engineering department while there is a high merit at the
time of admission in civil engineering department.

ENGLISH COMMUNICATION LEVEL: AS A RESULT OF SCHOOLING


BACKGROUND
This question was in the form of yes and no only.80% said yes while only 20%
said no. Most of the students consider school responsible for their english
communication while a little number of students think that their schools are not
responsible for their english communication.
NEED OF ENGLISH COMMUNICATION IN INSTITUTE
Most of the students were in the favour of the policy that English communication should
be taught in institute for example as subject Communication skills. 86 % students were
in the this favour. Only 4% were against this sujbect and were to willing to study English
communication as a subject. 10% were unware to this that whether the english
communication as a subject is important or not. Maximum students are willing to study
english communication as a subject.

Medium of COMMUNICATION is English AMONG STUDENTS IN INSTITUTE


0% students said that they communicate with each other in English is the
institute. 70% said that they communicate in English with each other sometimes
while 30% students said that they never use English as a medium
communication in their institute.

○ DIFFICULT COMMUNICATION: WRITTEN OR SPOKEN


Only 7% asses that written communication is difficult that spoken while remaining
93% consider that spoken communication is more difficult than written
communication. More number of students consider spoken communication more
difficult which is general phenomenon.

○ COMMUNICATION LEVEL AFTER PASSING THE INSTITUTE


33% said that their English communication will be effective after passing their institute.
40% said that their English communication will be only satisfactory means that there will
be no significant change in their English communication. 27% told that there will be no
change in their English communication after passing their institute means they have no
hope of improvement.

○ FACTORS RESPONSIBLE FOR LEVEL OF ENGLISH


COMMUNICATION

This was a diverse type of question and the answers are also diverse. General reading
is effective method as 33% students vote for it. 23% was in the favor of T.V that it is
also a good source to upgrade your English communication. No student considers
Radio as a good source for the improvement of English. 0% voted for Radio. 40%
consider that public exposure is the best way to improve the English communication.
4% said that it the atmosphere of family which affects the level of communication of any
person.
○ SATISFACTION WITH SYLLABUS of ENGLISH COMMUNICATION

24% students said that they are satisfied with the existing syllabus of English
communication which is taught in their institution but a large number of students are not
satisfied with the existing syllabus of English communication. 76% are not satisfied with
the existing syllabus of communication skills and they want changes in the existing
English communication syllabus. This is a very alarming situation because most of the
students are not satisfied with the existing syllabus of English communication.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS: AS A SUBJECT

When it was asked that have you studied communication skills as a subject 97% said
yes while only 3% said that they have not studied the communication skills as a subject.
This is a good phenomenon that almost maximum students have studies
communication skills as a subject.

○ IMPROVEMENT OF THE SUBJECT COMMUNICATION SKILLS ON


STUDENTS’ PERSONALITY

When it was asked that have you studied subject of communication skills most of the
students said yes. After it when it was asked that has it any affect on your personality
then only 20% said yes means a very few students feel it valuable. 40% said that it
affects a little and not so much. 30% said it has completely no affect on their
personality.10% said that they don’t know about it that whether it has any affect on their
personality or not.

○ COMMUNICATION SKILLS AS A SUBJECT IN PROFESSIONAL


STUDIES

When it was asked that whether communication skills should teach as a subject or not
then 80% was in this favor that it should teach as a subject. 10% said that it should not
teach as a subject because it increases the burden on students. 10% said that they
don’t know whether it should teach or not. Most of the students in civil engineering
department know the importance of communication skills and are in the favor of it.

ENGLISH TEACHER: MALE OR FEMALE


54% said that there should be male teacher to teach the communication skills
while 46% said that there should be female teacher to teach the
communication skills. There is balanced in the opinions regarding the sex of
teacher. In communication skills teacher is a center of importance because all
students have to communicate with the teacher.

○ BARRIERS TO ENGLISH COMMUNICATION

27% said that they lack of confidence which the main barrier in their communication
skills.34% said that they have little vocabulary due to which they are unable to
communicate in a good way. No one said that there is a problem of understanding, 0%
vote for it. 4% said that different accents are main barriers. 4% said that listening power
is also responsible. 4% said that personal conflicts are major cause. 30% said that we
face all these problems in communication skills.

○ WAYS TO IMPROVE ENGLISH COMMUNICATION

7% said that English communication can be good by reading. 4% said that the best way
to improve English is through the listening. 64% said that the only way to improve
English is by speaking. If you will speak English with each other then you will get the
right English. 25% told the other ways to improve the English.
