V-FLASH (VALUES FLASH)

Abstract

This study created a tutoring system entitled, V-flash, which is about values education. The researchers created this system to provide the grade 3 pupils of an interactive way in learning values education. They based their stories on the reference book Alive in Gods Spirit. To develop the system, the researchers used the Iterative model. During the planning phase, they read the reference book Alive in Gods Spirit in the library, then, they chose the stories which are applicable to their system. Further, they gathered all the requirements of the tutoring system: the reference book, the software that they are going to use in creating the system, conducted interviews to end- users in the building system. During the designing phase, the researchers collected all the information and data to system. In building the system, the researchers used Macromedia Flash 8, because it has capabilities to create story with animation, sound and button, also, the researchers used Adobe Photoshop CS6 to edit the picture that they will be going to use in the story. To edit and record the voice, the researchers used the wave pad. To test the system and to make sure that the system will work, they tested it to the grade 3 pupils of Mapaya Elementary School together with their adviser. The researchers guided and taught the teachers on how to use the system. Through this study, the researchers determined that using tutoring system Values Flash motivated the pupils to learn Values stories in the form of tutoring system. They are willing to pay attention and to learn. The teachers acknowledge the systems positive effect to the pupils. The pupils are attracted to the animation and to the sound of the system. It was found out that using tutoring system like Values Flash helps the teachers and the pupils to learn values. It is an effective way of tutoring Grade 3 pupils. It can improve their listening ability and their interest in stories.

CHAPTER I BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY This chapter discusses a brief explanation about the Intelligent Tutoring System and the system that the researchers have created.

Introduction Technology is the application of science. It is the scientific method and material used to achieve a commercial or industrial objective. Electronic or digital products and systems considered as a group. Technology is the making, modification, usage and knowledge of tools, machines, techniques, system and methods of organization in order to solve a problem, achieve goals, handle an applied input and output relation or perform a specific function. This is much related to the system, because it updates and help the researchers to create a system especially when it comes to creating a tutoring system it also related in education development, this comes the Intelligent Tutoring System. The teachers used (ITS) as their artificial lesson technique. The advantage of ITS in education is to help and provide an interactive way of learning using computer technology. (Citation)(Author, date) The researchers create a tutoring system about values story that came from choose story in the Grade 3 reference book Alive in Gods Spirit. Nowadays , most teaching process use multi-media education like Power Point Presentation, Movie lesson, and Sound lesson. So the researchers add some of that process an Intelligent Tutoring System to become a education tool. The researchers called it a V-flash or Values Flash, using Macromedia Flash 8 because it has a capacity to create animation, sound and buttons. Also the story will be delivering correctly and appropriately. The Values will be explore and watch by the children and the teacher. After the story there are activity was followed then the pupils answered it.

Research Objectives The objective of the study is to create a tutorial system about values formation of the students with the reference to the book Alive in Gods Spirit. (Author) Specifically, this study aims to: 1. Present values education to student using computer technology. 2. Help the teachers in discussing values lessons. 3. Provide an environment where the students can learn values education inan interactive way. Scope and Limitations The researchers created a tutoring system which focuses on the values education. This system is subject to the following limitations: 1. It is intended for Grade 3 pupils. 2. It contains only biblical stories which are found in book. 3. It does not allow recording the performance of the pupils in the activities. 4. It does not show online presentation.

Significance of the Study The result of this study is beneficial to the following: Grade 3 students. They will be more familiarized to the Gods word and can catch up easily to the lessons that the study wants to deliver. Teachers. They can reduce time and effort in presenting values lessons. School. They can use it as teaching tools and can use as advantage to other school. Parents. They can use it as a beginning tutorial to their children and to encourage enrolling because of the new style of teaching.

College Student taking up Education. They can use it for their practice teacher lesson, because it includes some teaching strategies and technique to improve their skills in teaching. Student Programmers. They can enhance their skills in creating a system, the Intelligent Tutoring System. Future Programmers. They can use it as their basic guide in their first system project. EdTech. They can practice this system as their teaching tool in the field of education technology.

CHAPTER III- SYSTEM METHODOLOGY This chapter explains the model which the researchers follow to complete this study. Figure 1.0 Iterative Model

Iterative model is a way of breaking down the software development of a large application into smaller chunks. In iterative development, feature code is designed, developed and tested in repeated cycles with each iteration additional features can be designed, developed and tested until there is a fully functional software application ready to be deployed to customers. (Rouse. November 2011). The researchers use this model because all of these phases fit to their tutoring system development. The phases are: requirements phase, designing phase, implementation phase, and review phase. System Requirements: It is a phase where the Project Planning and analysis were done. During the Project Planning, the researchers identify the scope of the system, ensure that the project is feasible and develop schedule and resource plan. The activities during the project planning are defining the problem, producing the project schedule and launching the project.

In this system entitled, Values Flash (V-Flash), the researchers follow the activities in project planning which provide education learning process in tutoring system. First they analyzed the project needs and the processing requirements of the system. Then they gathered information on how the system will work. After that, they selected stories in the reference book, Alive in Gods Spirit. Next they designed the system to make it more presentable and be attractive to the users. They downloaded animated colored images, sound clips and backgrounds from the Internet.

CHAPTER IV- CALENDAR OF ACTIVITIES/ THE SYSTEM

System Overview The researchers create tutoring system entitled, Values Flash. Values Flash or V-Flash is an Intelligent Tutoring System about Values which came from the reference book Alive in Gods Spirit.(Citation) The researchers use Macromedia Flash 8 to create and develop this system. It has animation, sounds activity and values to learn. Values Flash has different units and in every unit there are stories to explore. After the students listen to the stories, activities will be given. This system aims to inspire the students to learn values education in computer technology. This will also motivate them to learn and to explore the Intelligent Tutoring System.

CHAPTER V- PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT AND RESOURCES

Design and Implementation The researchers design the system by using the Iterative model of SDLC. With each phase of Iterative model, the researchers follow all the steps to create a tutoring system called Values Flash. The researchers use Gantt chart for every task schedule in order to see the progress of the project. Gantt chart helps the researchers to achieve every development of the system and to maximize all the development process for the system. To organize the system and to have a reliable system flow, they use Data flow diagram in order for the user to be aware on how to use the system properly and to have an interactive way of learning Values education. In implementing the system, the researchers met the teachers of Mapaya Elementary School to conduct their research. During the process, they have observed that their respondents were amazed to the animation brought by the system. They explained all the details not only to the pupils but also to the teachers. The system was successfully implemented with the help of everyone.

Results and Observation Based on the design and implementation, the result of the system Values Flash is successful. The researchers delivered the system to the users with the aim to meet its objectives. The researchers observed also both the advantages and disadvantages of the system. The advantages of the system Values Flash are: the students are willing to learn Values stories and they want to have an interactive way of learning the system. Likewise, the teachers agreed to use it to minimize their tasks and maximize the pupils participation. The disadvantages are: the system Values Flash can be used only if the school or the user has a computer, and if the school or the user has knowledge in Values.

Conclusions and Recommendations The researchers concluded that Values Flash or V-Flash was able to meet successfully the following objectives.

Recommendations After the development and testing of the system as well as the analysis of data, the following are recommended for the enhancement of the system usage.
