Malaysia as a Tourism Destination for Education

1. Introduction

Education in Malaysia especially higher education and training programmer is experiencing


rapid development and targeted to be centre of excellence in this region. Public and private
tertiary institutions in Malaysia are able to offer high quality of education with affordable tuition
fee. There are various programmers such as skill-based and professional courses are afforded by
these institution.

Furthermore, education is one of the service subsectors for continuous development of


Industrial Master Plan 3 (IMP3) which is for the year 2006-2020. This report discusses the
factors that support Malaysia is a best choice of tertiary education as compare to Australia.

1.1. Purpose

The purpose of this report was to analyze the educational advantages of two countries namely
Malaysia and Australia.

1.2. Scope

This report discusses various perspectives such as language, quality of education, economy,
politics and social of the two countries.

1.3. Method

The data of this report was collected from secondary source such as articles.

1.4. Limitations

The ability to digest information especially in the Australia context due to no experience of
studying in Australia. Lack of sources discussed the preferences of international students
selecting Malaysia than Australia.

1.5. Background

Malaysia has always been a competitive study destination for international students. This can be
seen many foreign students caroled in Malaysian university. In addition, the number of private
higher education institutions is growing in order to cater the influx of international students to
these institutions. Hence, this indicates the good prospect of tertiary education sector in
Malaysia.

3.1. Low currency rate

There are various programs offered by Malaysian higher education institutions are
recognized by reputable universities. This indicates high quality standard of programs
offered by Malaysian universities. There are also many collaboration programs between
Malaysia and renowned universities such as twining program 2+1 and 3+0, where students
can choose to complete the final year oversea or in Malaysia respectively. Although
Malaysia is a developing country as compared to Australia as a developed country but
Malaysia provides tertiary education standard at par with Australia.

3.3. A comprehensive option of programs

There is an extensive range of option of programs for students to choose either academic or
skill-based fields. There are also various areas of study including Medical, Law,
Accountancy, Business Administration, Art and Design, Hospitality and so forth. Although
Malaysia is a developing country as compared to Australia as a developed country but
Malaysia is able to offer number of programs equivalent to the programs offered by
Australian universities.

3.4. Political stability and safety

The Malaysian history has proved that Malaysia is one of the most stable political countries.
This has ensured the safety of international students. The political stability also ensures the

smoothness of the international students study. The success of the Malaysian Government
manages the multi racial society harmoniously is an evident of the capability of the
government to manage international student that come from various cultures, customs and
live styles. On the other hand, the Australia also known as the stable political countries, but
in this case, Malaysia become most popular for the foreign students because Malaysia
currency is very low in rate.

3.5. Hassle-free in student visa application

Malaysia has less red tape visa application for international student. A non-selective
international student visa approved by immigration department. In Australia, the visa
approval is selective especially the application from Arabs Countries student due to the
association of Arabs with terrorism.

3.6. Social

The acceptance of Malaysian towards international community is excellent. This is due to


Malaysians had lived in multi-racial country since independence. The various festivals
celebration in Malaysia provides an excellent opportunity to international students enjoy
their stay in Malaysia. For instance, international students can participate in various religion
festivals celebrated by Malaysians although these foreigners are away from their
hometowns. The acceptance of Australian towards international community is not as open as
Malaysian. The attitude of white and non white society has created suspicious to the non
white student and not well welcomed by Australians.

3.7. English as the medium of instruction

There are two accent of English language usage in Malaysia. They are American and British
slang. Hence, it is easier for international students to adapt the study environment. Majority
of higher education institutions in Malaysia used English as their medium of instruction.

The reference text books are in English and most of the books published by international
publisher. Thus, students are exposed to the international context of discussion although they
study in Malaysia. In Australia, they are using Australian accent where it can cause
difficulty to international students to adapt its environment.

4. Conclusion

The study environment in Malaysia is more pleasant than Australia due to various factors
discussed earlier.
The Malaysian Government is committed to the tertiary education. This can be seen
that government seriously enhancing the learning infrastructures to the first class facilities
especially in technology advancement, establishment of Malaysian Qualification Agency
(MQA), and support in the establishment of private higher education institutions.
The increase of national and international conferences organized by local universities
has created suitable environment for tertiary education.

5. Recommendations and implementation


The findings and conclusion in this report support the following recommendations:

1. Low cost currency in rate.


2. International affiliations.
3. International recognized qualifications.
4. Political stability and safety.
5. Suitable weather almost along the year.
6. Food and beverages easy to find and with the reasonably priced.
