world history from the Creation up to Resurrection of Christ. Despite the title the
Passion of Christ itself is totally missing from the narrative. The rubric instead
repeats the basic dates of the historical concept, which predetermines both the
content and the structure of this first part of the Chronicle. Both the
interpretations of the prophecy and the chronology belong to Julius Africanus
and coincide with the fragments from its Chronograph preserved in Synkellos
and Eusebius. The latter allows us to identify Julius Africanus as the author of
the whole first part of the Slavic Chronicle. The text of the prophecy itself
(Dan.9.22-27) sheds some light on the time the Slavic version was created. The
comparison between verses in our texts, the oldest Slavic translations of Daniel
and the Greek text of Dan.9.22-27 shows that our text derives from an earlier
version of the Theodotions translation of Daniels book of prophecy that differs
from the one represented in the ancient Slavic manuscripts. At the same time the
readings of our text coincide with some readings in Vita of Methodius and the
oldest Slavic verses about Daniel preserved in Russian and South Slavic
hymnographic sources and do not follow completely any of the early Slavic
translations reconstructed by Evseev. The textological evidence enables us to
conclude that the Chronicle was translated soon after the arrival of the
Methodius disciples in Bulgaria.
