Sample Comments I don't compete indoors but would like to keep these for those who do. It goes without saying that the competitions that Northern Athletics put on are invaluable for our athletes. We should all be doing everything we can to make sure they continue to take place. All the champs are very important but my athletes are track based. without the northerns, there is only nationals which is too advanced for some and there are no regional (yorkshire indoors) All of the above are fantastic events and it would be a real shame to lose them The Area Indoor and Outdoor Track Meeting are an important stepping stone to more National Competitions With entry fees and potential sponsorship it should be possible to organise all the events comfortably within the 109050 mentioned below and realistically a lot less All of the above could benefit from a bigger marketing push and/or look to improve the level of competition through other means

Track & Field Indoor Open Meetings

Road Relays

Northern Championships are vital to athletes looking to progress to the next level and compete on a National and International level. Without these Championships it would be devastating to the sport in general. Forgive my ignorance but shouldn't the Northern T&F Leagues be mentioned or do they financially function independantly from Northern Athletics?

uable for our athletes.

Sample comments Again, need a rep level between county and national. Without region, gap would be too large for many This is a vital stepping stone between a county vest and an England vest for athletes Incorporating inter-area matches into each of the UK Cross challenge fixtures may be a good idea. The same could possibly be done for each of the Run-Britain Grand Prix fixtures. This may represent more meaningful competition, rather than having the fixtures at various 'random' events. We have many athletes who have medalled in Euro/World and Olympic competitions. How would we have found them without a Northern Group Only if cost is manageable and minimal eg. vests and perhaps petrol , only within UK If you take these away what are athletes aiming for. I represented the South of England and it was a big thrill to get that vest, knowing it was probably as high as I could get. Development pathways should be in the remit of England Athletics and UK Athletics. Stop just concentrating on elite athletes. Also, we need some means of retaining

women athletes at U17 and U20 Every athlete in every discipline should be entitled to the opportunity to compete at the highest possible level and be provided with the necessary 'stepping stones' to do so It'd be a tragedy to lose these opportunities for athletes, a great stepping stone to further levels of competition and a serious honour in themselves

Do you wish to retain a Development pathway for Officials?

Yes

No

Sample comments How would this be done in terms improving an official's skill set? Up and coming officials need to be "treated correctly" and "looked after correctly". This will help to ensure that they will remain interest and NOT go away after a relatively small period of time. If there is no pathway then how will officials improve Development should be headed by England Athletics Northern Athletics meetings offer great development opportunities particularly if you want to progress at national level. Unless NA are given money to do this, this should be funded by countries (England, Scotland, etc) Need for the Northern events to be part of the ladder - ideally official training back with the North and the Counties

If your answer was No to Question 5-do you have any alternative ideas, comments or suggestions? Response Answer Options Count 30 answered question 30 skipped question 1612

competition should be provided via a central organisation IE UKA, England athletics declare independence from England Athletics fee`s then could be halfed The competitions need preserving going forward but I'm not sure if NA is the body to do it. There are too many bodies involved with regional/area provision. Perhaps the regional councils, network groups, area association competition providers need consolidating into something meaningful and transparent and which engages with participants - whether they be athletes, officials, coaches, race organisers or whatever. The same individuals involved in the management of the sport could still be involved in a better organised system. My answer to Q5 would never, ever be No! Clubs and/or counties should be encouraged to work togerther to organise an alternative .... ie form a NCAA!! Allow amateur clubs to find their own route.

Do you have you any further suggestions to ensure the sustainability of NA? Response Answer Options Count 281 answered question 281 skipped question 1361 Comments: Samples & Extracts I would be happy to pay 5 pounds and I'm sure others would as well. A 1 off yearly membership fee to compete in any NA fixture would be more than acceptable. Being a student I would happily pay in the range of 5-15 (+15 starts to seem reasonably expensive). I would be willing to pay more than 3! doesnt see why asking those 36k plus athletes to pay a larger fee would be unreasonable In my view, EA get a lot of money for providing little when you compare it with what goes to the regions. Why cannot some of that funding be diverted? EA provide to NA funding from the 10 per year levy charged that has risen well in excess of inflation rates in recent years. Fees to England athletics should be sufficient to offer support to regions. If the number of competitions are reduced then staff costs maybe able to be reduced. Additionally, accommodation maybe expensive and there are cheaper alternatives. The levy question does not apply to me as I am not a club member. 3 does not seem too much to ask but would all 36,350 be prepared to pay? I would choose not to pay because I'm leaving the area soon. Individual race fees should go up. Why should club runners not participating suffer? It can play a role as long as it goes with the general flow the England Athletics is going. The sport is constantly evolving and Northern Athletics needs to reflect this. I am interested in sustaining area athletics in the North but I'm unsure as to the best way of doing this. I would favour a reinvigorated Northern Athletics that does more than provide competition and possibly takes over the work of the regions. Participants do not understand what the multitude of different organisations having some kind of influence on their sport do. A simpler, more transparent system is needed. NA provides valuable regional support. But must work within/as part of EA. To my mind EA doesn't have a regional policy which is where NA comes in The entry fees for events should be raised to cover any championships This needs to be looked at along with midland and southern bodies Entry fees should be increased in combination with cost cutting initiatives to minimise or even eliminate the need for a levy.
