APPENDIX

University of Prince Edward Island

The conference was funded through a research grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities
Research Council of Canada which is managed by UPEI. The conference took place in Halifax,
Nova Scotia, on February 21st and 22nd, 2009.
I was responsible for planning all the details for the conference. I first created a budget based
around the needs of the conference through which all expenses were tracked. I then recruited
twenty-four middle school mathematics teachers from the Halifax Regional School Board which
the conference and research was to be based around. My responsibilities also included booking
airline tickets for participants, hotel conference rooms and suites, catering, procurement of
materials and supplies, all necessary paperwork and arranging all audio visual equipment. Finally,
I acted as the liaison between the conference chair, attending academics, teacher guests, the hotel,
its staff and UPEI. Any problems encountered were dealt with in a swift and expeditious manner.

Matteo’s Gelato
Specialty equipment was imported from Italy and the Gelato is made on site by a Gelato Artisan,
one who is a master in Gelato confection. Matteo’s also sells barista coffees, Paninis, sandwiches,
soups, salads, cold drinks and baked goods. The business is a seven day per week operation and
presently employs ten individuals, including a full-time manager.
As owner, my responsibilities rested solely with bookkeeping and advertising. Those duties
included payroll, week to week and month to month reconciliations and accounting, all
government remittances, accounts payable and local newspaper advertising. The business now has
an employee who handles these duties.

Sports Junkies Consignors

I built the business from the ground up. Sports Junkies was a retail sporting goods store,
complimented by a bicycle, ski/snowboard and hockey service centre. By the year 2001, I had
outgrown the existing twenty-seven hundred square foot location and moved in to a larger six
thousand square foot building. The business employed up to sixteen individuals. The store also
employed a full-time manager who oversaw all facets of the operation.
As owner, I was responsible for all financial decisions, banking and accounting, marketing and
advertising, inventory acquisition and control, lease negotiations, liaison between the company
and major suppliers and to be the face of the company.
In my position as manager, I was responsible for managing day to day operations, customer
service and sales, supervision of staff, scheduling, hiring (and firing), day to day and week to
week banking, payroll and reconciling accounts.
