Brock Commercial Bin Roof Peak Loads

Sometimes it is difficult to do an apples-to-apples comparison of roof design features between grain bin manufacturers because all do not present their information in the same form. Roof peak loads by themselves do not tell the total story of roof strength. Brocks structured roofs are designed to meet all of the following four specifications:

Design peak load Based upon charts shown below Design snow load - Ground snow load of either 40 pounds per square foot (195 kilograms per square meter) or 50 pounds per square foot (244 kilograms per square meter) Design temperature control cable** load - 1,500 pounds (680 kg) per temperature control cable. (Brocks 60- through 105-foot (18.3-32.0 m) diameter commercial bins are designed to accommodate the loads from multiple temperature cables see Construction Manual for number and location) Dead load of the structure Varies upon bin model

**Optional roof structures for some bin diameters may be available for special situations or loading conditions. For instance, Brocks 48- and 54-foot (14.6- and 16.5-m) diameter commercial bins require an add-on support package if temperature cables are to be used in those bins.

Brock 60- through 105-foot (18.3-32.0 m) diameter commercial bins are designed to allow for the use of temperature cables in addition to the allowable peak loads posted.

Total Design Load Example 1 Calculate the total design load (the amount of weight the roof is designed to hold in addition to the weight of the bins roof structure and roof panels) for a Brock 78-foot diameter commercial bin with 40-pound per square foot snow loads: Peak Load - 17,500 lbs. Snow Load - 93,656 lbs. (4,778.4 sq. ft of roof area X 19.6 lbs. per sq. ft.) Temperature Cable Load - 21,000 lbs. (1,500 lbs. per cable X 14 temperature cables) Total Design Load 132,156 lbs. (104,156 kg)

Total Design Load Example 2 Calculate the total design load (the amount of weight the roof is designed to hold in addition to the weight of the bins roof structure and roof panels) for a Brock 78-foot diameter commercial bin with 50-pound per square foot snow loads: Peak Load - 10,000 lbs.

Snow Load 117,070 lbs. (4,778.4 sq. ft of roof area X 24.5 lbs. per sq. ft.) Temperature Cable Load - 21,000 lbs. (1,500 lbs. per cable X 14 temperature cables) Total Design Load 148,070 lbs. (122,435 kg)
