!

I like how David La Chappelle has used abandoned buildings to create very high fashion style images using the abandoned looking props also for models to use.

Moodboard for high fashion within Wasted Location

I decided i did not like this approach and i preferred my other ideas so did not go further into this idea.

E-waste Old Cameras etc.

Experimenting using double exposure within polaroids. I feel the technique can create some very pretty images however this does not really relate to my waste theme as much as the polaroids that include the wasted locations

The polaroids at the bottom work better because the images also relate to waste because of the environment in which the images were taken (Wasted Locations). I feel the environment within the polaroids work well better than the normal polaroids next to the river etc.

Polaroids can be seen as waste of money However the images inside do not relate to waste so this concept wouldn't work as well as my others

Charity Shop Fashion

Using only charity shops in medway create a fashion series that looks like it could come from the highstreet

Use only charity shops in medway for clothing/ outfits. I also want the portraits to be colourful and attract a young audience similar to myself. I plan on changing the colour of the backdrop this will either be by using a coloured backdrop or coloured gels. I want to use bright colours for example pink, purple or blue also giving it a young fashion feel. I also plan to use a lot of recycled jewellery and customised clothing that has been recycled into something else this relates to fashion and the ways we can re use many pieces of clothing in imaginative ways.

Inspirational images for charity fashion images

I like the use of coloured backdrop and id like to achieve something similar, i also like how the photographer has used a range of different models however i want to keep my image set to around 3 or 4 image sets of one or two models with different outfits. i want to experiment with different colours, patterns and textures within the clothing

I want to use colour film and either medium format or large format Unknown Photographer Found off Tumblr

Call to faith by Carmen Mitrotta (Contemporary Photographer)

I like the use of colour within her images and also her use of material over the face (and how this fits in with her colour scheme of images) I feel the use of this colour effect could look good within my portraits for charity shop fashion, its very fashion style and looks effective.

I think this article says a lot about how people today like to spend their money. How much is necessary to spend on clothes and why do people feel the need to spend as much money on their physical appearance as possible.

Using Recycled Negatives To Double Expose ?

For fashion purposes ?

I like the effect double exposure can create on some images and i would like to experiment with double exposure to maybe see if i could a image for waste

I experimented using double exposure in photoshop however i found this to also be not as strong as my other idea so i decided not to continue with this idea.
!

The images also do not link with waste as much as my previous concepts.

The purpose of this shoot was to experiment with using wasted locations as a backdrop for fashion style portraits. I found this location right next to halls, it is a un used building and was ideal for my test shoot. ! The test shoot gave me a idea to what my nal images would look like if i took this path, however after looking at the test shots i decided my other ideas were stronger. It was very important that i still experimented with test shots to nd out what looked effective

The location worked well for my wasted locations however i chose to go in a different direction with work i felt was stronger

Experimenting with colour and editing seeing what i could achieve with colour in these portraits The more grunge these portraits look the better for my theme it emphasises the wasted location instead of the images being all about the models

Experimenting incorporating the environment within the portraits and how i could maybe frame with other images

How one material can be used in many ways

This image very successfully shows how something very simple can be shaped and turned into clothing i would like to achieve something like this for my project

Mike Biddle: Why plastic is still 'the last frontier' of recycling

Contextual Reference

Why plastic can be harmful to us and the environment!

when burnt it produces harmful fumes, it requires large amounts of chemicals

! ! during creation which is costly to the environment, and when damped in the water sources they can harm aquatic animals. Plastic (particularly packaging) is generally not recyclable or biodegradeable" They get into soil and slowly release toxic chemicals. They eventually break down into the soil, with the unfortunate consequence being that animals eat them and often choke and die." The petroleum and the gas thats used to create plastic bags is a nite resource." #Plastic bags which pollute our oceans#have a bad habit of killing#sea turtles#in particular. They are by far the biggest casualty in all of this as they mistake carrier bags for jelly sh, or similar and then end up choking."

Vogue Hommes Japan

This image is very High fashion from vogue showing that even vogue are interested in fashion images using recycled materials. I like the use of the netting wrapped around the head and also the branches resting on the models back. This together with the fashionable clothes in the image create a very high fashion image.

I like this image because it is very unusual and weird, apart from the cans on her face the image could be used as a beauty shot looking at the womans perfect makeup etc this image also reminds me of Lady Gagas Telephone music video in which she used coke cans as hair accessories

Julija Jankelaityte

Tim Walker

Use of materials to create unique clothing for fashion purposes. I like the idea of using unique materials to create forms, shapes and clothing that could be seen as fashionable, this is what i feel Tim Walker has achieve in all of the images above. he has used materials in a way which no one would expect they could be used. Walker choses to create outfits that are rather theatrical and tell a story within the photograph.

Danny Treacy Them

Creating Weird Creations out of a collection of clothing I like how Danny Treacy has created a haunting set of images based of clothing he has collected. I like how each image set the clothing or creation is completely different. Danny uses a black backdrop to create a dark image together with his haunting creations, both things together creates tension within the images and this is why i think they work so well.

Adam Bouska Photographer Adam Bouska was inspired by 'Green Week' in America and decided to create a fashion shoot that would fit in well with it. He styled his model in recycled materials and then photographed them in a way that looks like they could be from a fashion magazine. The dresses the models are in are made out of old newspapers swell as the background and all of the accessories. Bouska has made using recycling materials in dresses look very fashionable with the way he has made the images into a fashion editorial. The dramatic hair, makeup and poses makes the clothing very desirable, I was inspired by this as it makes recycled clothing look very fashionable.

!
I like how Adam has created clothing using something we read everyday, nearly every household has a newspaper and i think the images are really successful.

Fashion Designer Inspiration

Alexander McQueen using "unusual" materials for stage and fashion choices. His stage design consisted of old "junk" pieced together, the choice of reflective floor and lighting making it suitable for his fashion show. I love how Alexander has used recycled materials within the dress, black bin liners and bubble wrap, it is very imaginative and strange and this is why i find it successful.

Artist and set-Designer Luke Abby ! i chose this as another example at how material like foil can create a shiny and mirror like surface which can be very interesting to photograph

FALL 2014 READY-TO-WEAR

Gareth Pugh
When first looking into this project i never imagined i would find these sort of designers making clothing out of recycled materials however it isn't uncommon and this research into fashion was very important into shaping my project. ! Research into fashion like Gareth Pugh and Alexander Mcqueen was very important to the styling of the materials onto the model.

Styling Using Unexpected materials Self Research

Dressed Hannah in foil like material testing different ways materials can be used for fashion. I like creating shapes and forms within the material and feel it looks effective.

Experimenting with using material to form clothing, shapes and interesting forms. I feel this could be interesting to link to waste by using unexpected materials like Tim Walker and Danny Treacy. I could perhaps use Materials that can not be recycled easily.

Tutorial
After my tutorial with Steffi i decided that going with my strongest idea would be best, before the tutorial i was stuck with what idea would be best to go with and what i would get the best images out of. I decided to go with the theme of building clothing out of items that are hard or impossible to recycle, i have also decided i want to shoot this in a fashion way incorporating ideas from my other previous Experiments/Themes for example the use of coloured backdrops etc.

Studio Test Shoot one

Test shot using coloured back drop i knew from my inspirational images i wanted to use colour. I decided to light my shot with two soft boxes at either side i liked the lighting and i think it worked really well with the coloured background. I lit my set up similar to a fashion style image this was important because i wanted my images to look very fashionable. i also experimented with over and underexposing and seeing what this did to the colour of my backdrop.

Materials
http://lausd-oehs.org/docs/Recycling/Non_Recyclable_List.pdf When searching for materials i could use that couldn't be recycled Plastic stood out to me because nearly everything that is plastic is hard or impossible to recycle, i also thought that maybe i could play around with colour and pattern within this because i knew there are a wide variety of plastics in different colours for example art plastic material and also cellophane which can be used to wrap presents and also flowers.

i liked the idea of wrapping someone up so that the plastic was covering the person to show that this issue is starting to effect us more and more each day and its starting to become a real big issue and maybe starting to suffocate us, it is changing the world we live in today and eventually if we carry on will ruin it.

I also like the idea of the model being just a shape without a identity so only showing little bits of body or face to show someone being trapped within this plastic just like we are stuck within this problem.

PLASTIC: Any type of plastic that has NO number for recycling (e.g. Trash bags, Ziplock bags, inside cereal box plastic, bubble wrap, clear plastic wrap, some department store bags, potato chip bags, single cheese wrappers, 6-pack plastic and candy wrappers.) Soiled plastic bottles and bags.

Test Shoot One

Test Shooting with coloured backdrops and also model poses

Studio Test Shoot 2

Testing with material cellophane I chose the material cellophane because it is really hard if not impossible to recycle, the material was also available with patterns and colours which i thought could work well towards my fashion styling and look effective.

Test Shoot 2 Testing Materials

I experimented with different ways we could shape the dress and how Nicky could stand in a position that worked well with the dress and its shape For the next shoot i will do the same lighting set up however i will ask the model Nicky to wear either all black or white because i feel the dress she wore beneath was too distracting ! After a tutorial with Steffi we both agreed that the material, poses and styling were too much fashion based and felt that it didn't suit my topic. I felt my topic had to be dark and serious because of the effects its having on us and the earth. I also think the pattern on the material was too distracting for this project.

When first looking into Carmen Mitrotta I liked the use of material over the face, this is just a few images of how i have tried to create a similar style within my own work.

The test polaroids didn't work very well with the material and didn't allow us to see through the material which is one of the things i think works so well in the digital tests.

Failed Polaroids from shoot

Shoot Planning I planned to set up the shoot like a typical fashion shoot, looking at many typical fashion lighting set ups and the one i preferred most was the side lit effect this allowed me to also gain the darkness in the images i wanted. I lit the model with one medium soft box to the side of her because i wanted harsh dark shadows to make the portraits more dramatic and also i liked the way it lit and had different effects on the colours of the material

Side lit Fashion References

Test shoot 3 - Coloured Film Shoot Shot using Red, Blue and Green plastic art material

I like the darker lighting, it gives it a darker fashion feel instead of the typical fashion look, i also think this works well with the material and colour of the materials, i chose green, blue and red giving it a almost 3D effect .

Only showing a little bit of her face looks like shes trying to escape to breathe and that she is suffocating

I like the images that cover her face and give the images more mystery and wonder what we are looking at (this is demonstrated more on the other contact sheets) i really like the dark shadows and i feel this emphasises how dark of a topic this is and how it can be easily pushed in the dark and forgot about. if i had the time to reshoot i would have also moved the model further away from the backdrop because little little parts of the backdrop are visible
However i felt these images didn't work in my final image set this was due to the darker colour of the materials and backdrop and also the different shapes i created when wrapping the model again.

My final print choice My final choice of prints consisted of these because i wanted awkward moments within the shoot i feel this put across my dark suffocated theme even more successfully. i also chose these images because i knew i wanted a portrait to face each way then a centre portrait in the middle, this is also how i would arrange them within a exhibition. if i had more time i would have liked to carry on this series and printed off more because a few of my negatives would have also worked well with this image set

Other images i decided not to use

These are some of the images i chose not to use this was because i felt they were not as strong as my final prints, this could have been due to lighting, shape of material or just how the model is posed

I would have liked to experiment with more coloured backdrops

If i could continue this series i would print..

I would print this image because i like the way the material wraps around the head and also how this works well with the models pose. I also think this image looks very constricting and suffocating which fits well with my theme. The way i have wrapped the material around the models body resembles a straight jacket contributing further to themes of being trapped and suffocated.

Critical Appraisal
When rst starting this project i initially knew i wanted to do something with fashion or portraits this was due to personal preference and what i felt i could do best in. I also found that research into this was easier because of my interest into fashion photography i found i already knew many inuences that i could use as inspiration, my tutorials with Stef were really important to the shaping of my project i felt i couldn't see the strongest part of my work and we together discussed which was the strongest and best idea i had. I had a few issues within this project and the one that was the hardest to overcome was nding space to actually book the studio due to it being really busy and fully booked, to solve this i asked to share the studio with others that didn't mind borrowing half of the studio out this meant i had to communicate with other students. Another problem that came from this was that my nal prints were took too close to the backdrop however with the studio being fully booked and only a few days before hand in i didn't have time to correct this but given more time i would have re shot distancing the model further away from the backdrop. I felt i enjoyed this project more than the others i have overtook this year because i feel i have applied more of myself to this project and also the fact i decided to take the fashion editorial route which is what i want to pursue further after this project. I think my strongest part of this project was my research into other photographers and also the materials to use for shoot and my weakest being my nal prints, i feel i need more practise when printing in the colour darkroom even though this time i found it easier because i shot my lm in the studio and most of my prints were the same colour.
