AlthoughtheBoardofTrusteesisofficiallyseekingapermanentsuccessortoPresidentProenza,Irecommend analternativeoptionthatmeetstheurgentdemandsofourUniversity.Decisiveandfocusedleadershipis requiredtoprovidethedirectionnecessarytofacethechallengesandseizetheopportunitiesthatwillposition TheUniversityofAkronforfuturesuccess.Myexperienceasaleaderinhighereducationwithoverthirtyfive yearsatYoungstownStateandOhioStateandoverthelasttwentytwomonthsattheUniversityofAkron, presentsauniqueopportunitythatIhopewillbeseriouslyconsideredbytheBoardofTrustees. AtimesuchasthisrequiresaninterimleadershipapproachtosuccessfullypositiontheUniversityto deliveronanambitiousstudentsuccessagenda.Inthehighereducationsector,wearefacinginanincreasingly competitiveenvironmentinwhichwemustsimultaneouslyattractstudents,retainandgraduatestudents, stabilizeourfiscalhealth,growourresearchportfolioandraisemoreexternalfunds.Themoretraditionalroute ofselectingandlaunchingapresidentwhichinvolvesthenewpermanentpresidenttakingthenecessarytime tobuildateamofleaders,learnthecommunity,connectwithalumniandmajordonorsandsetastrategicand operationaldirectionmaytakeuptotwoyears.Iamconcernedthatbecauseofinternalandexternalforces, theUniversitycannotaffordthelossofmomentumthatislikelytoaccompanythiskindofatimelag.Istrongly encouragetheBoardofTrusteestoconsideraninterimpresidencythatwillallowthegroundworkcurrently beinglaidtogainmomentumandthetransitiontoanewpermanentleadertotakeplacewhentheUniversityis onmoresolidground. WithgreatreverencetoDr.Proenzasimpressivelegacy,theUniversityfindsitselfatacrossroadsthata newcomermaynotbeabletocompetitivelynavigate.Itismyopinionthatweneedmorethanaleaderwhocan hitthegroundrunning.Rather,theUniversitywouldbebetterservedbyaleaderwhohasbeenonthe groundwiththecurrentteam.Aleaderwhoisawareofthechallenges,talentsandcommitmentofthecurrent leadershipteam;wellversedinthecurrentcultureoffacultyandstaff;knowswellandiswellknownbythe communitiesimportanttoourenrollment,fundraisingandstrategicpartnershipstrategies.Suchaleaderwillbe preparedtomaketimelytoughdecisionstoimprovestudentsuccess.IamconfidentthatIamtherightleader tobridgethetransitionfromDr.Proenzasaccomplishedfifteenyeartenuretotheselectionofanew permanentpresidentwhowillbechargedwithpropellingourgreatUniversityintoitsnexteraofexcellence.Put simply,IbelieveIamtherightleaderforthistime. Importantly,inselectinganinterimleadertheUniversitywillnothavetopayforthesalaryoftwo presidentsacurrentsittingpresidentandoneonsabbatical.Thisprovidesanother$500kto$1millionfor reinvestmentintoscholarships,endowedchairs,facultydevelopment,fundraising,andstrategicpartnerships likeABIA,UARFandtheUniversityParkneighborhood.

WhiletheoutcomesofthestrategicinitiativesIhaveledundertheallinclusivestudentsuccessbanner areyettobeobjectivelymeasuredfortheirimpact,thereisevidenceofearlywinsandpositivemomentumin therecruitment,retention,scholarshipreallocation,alumniengagement,careerplanning,facultyrelationships, inclusiveexcellenceandpartnershipareas.TheBoardactingasquicklyasprudenttonamemeInterimPresident willprovidetheauthorityandresponsibilitynecessarytomaximizethetimeperiodbetweenNOWandJuly1, 2014.
