24 October 2009 INTERNATIONAL DAY OF CLIMATE ACTION

On October 24th, 2009, MILLIONS of people worldwide will engage in the International Day of Climate Action. This movement was initiated by “350.org” and is demanding the reduction of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to 350 parts per million. Many climate scientists have agreed this is the maximum safe level and warn that catastrophic climate events could occur if this limit is exceeded. Climate change is already happening more rapidly than expected even a few years ago. The time is NOW to let our governments know we care about the climate for our children, grandchildren, friends and neighbours. This December, world leaders will congregate in Copenhagen, Denmark, to sign a „postKyoto‟ climate change agreement. The time is NOW to demand our voices be heard. Canadian leaders must proceed with legislation for safe targets to cap carbon dioxide emissions and ensure a healthy future for our children and grandchildren.

Join our event
 HRM organizers invite you to a family-friendly get -together on the Halifax Common (by the Pavilion). Festivities will begin at 2pm, and at 3:50pm we will join together for a collective action to show our support for strong government leadership and action on climate change. Check into the Facebook group to see up -to-date information for events leading up to and the day of the event. Search “International Day of Climate Action - Halifax, NS” on Facebook.

The action
 We are encouraging individuals to bring a 2x3 ft sign to the event depicting your fears and passions regarding climate change. You may be concerned about your coastal community, grandchildren, favourite wilderness area or vulnerable species, or communities in the Global South. Let your artistic juices flow!…it could even be 3-D. We suggest writing 350 on the back as the solution. Please consider reusing materials, such as an old piece of cardboard or foam board. Please indicate your intent to participate by emailing Janelle Frail at janellefrail@gmail.com or by joining our Facebook group. Last-minute participants are always welcome, but we would love to know we have your support! If you would like to get involved in planning the event, please contact Janelle at janellefrail@gmail.com
