Fading Away
Back when I played games like Super Mario Bros. 3 and Popeye for the Nintendo Entertainment System, these games were static events. They play and look just like they did more than 20 years ago! Thats what makes returning to those games so nostalgic. Their memory is sealed in the amber, the cartridge of zeros and ones making up the jumps and enemies and levels. We can return to that time, not only remembering the game, but also remembering how we felt when we played them. But the times are changing. Now video games can be modied on the y, and code changes and updates can be pumped out in patches that fundamentally change that games experience. Halo players will remember modications to weapons that took the battle rie from obscurity to celebrity status. Dota 2 heroes go through changes all the time, their powers shifting monthly as coders ddle with the knobs and levers attached to the heroes powers. One day they are on top of the world, the next they are an afterthought. I lament these changes. I want to have something that I can go back to in 20 years to show my children what I enjoyed during my early adulthood (after their homework, of course). What legacy are developers leaving behind them as video games become slaves to servers that are shut down after gamers move on? Want to go back and play Halo 2 as you remember with your friends? Dont try to do it online, my friend. Those servers are gone. There is some benet to this. Diablo 3 recently underwent MAJOR changes. The new patch, effectively making the game version 2.0, changed how loot drops, almost every characters abilities were tweaked and monsters were modied. The result is a completely new experience that only resembles the original version because they didnt change the art assets or the core gameplay of Diablo (hack monsters, collect loot). But soon gamers will tire of those changes, developers will succumb to their whims and Diablo 3 will change again and again. When my children ask what I enjoyed when I was younger, Ill tell them I liked writing. Ill denitely tell them about Super Mario Bros. 3. But when I recall to them the pizza parties with friends, huddled around computers, playing Team Fortress 2 or Dota 2, those games might not exist anymore. It is an old-codger stance I wasnt sure I would ever take I do enjoy updates that make games better but every time I see servers getting shut down, it reads almost like a eulogy piece. And as games more and more require us to connect to the Internet and their servers, those obituaries will continue to make the news. There are memories, sure, but we can never go back there.
I played Diablo 3 avidly when it was released in 2012. I leveled up my Witch Doctor, collected all the loot I could nd and enjoyed plenty of hours for my $60. Still, something was off. Players continue to play Diablo 2, a 14-year old game (that will likely have its servers shut off too) because of its addictive nature and challenge. But in Diablo 3, that feeling wasnt there. Finding loot was hard and not worth the time. The auction houses, where you could buy other players loot, were a faster, more efcient way to get goods. The game ended up feeling more like working the stock market than working a monster with your spells and weapons. Now with the new patch, 2.0, things are much better. The character classes have new, tweaked powers that make it fun to experiment with builds and powers. Monsters drop loot at a lower rate, but those items are almost always geared toward your character. No more identifying legendary items that are only good for that Barbarian you never leveled up. The game still has some problems. It can be repetitive by its hack-and-slash nature, and there are still issues with lag since every game must connect to Blizzards servers (another game that will likely be shut down in the next ve to ten years). Still, the sum of the parts makes for a ne hackand-slash and loot-all-that-you-can-nd video game. If you havent played since launch, Id go back. If you havent played at all, well, the dungeons are just ne now.

Medieval Fair:
Always something to do and something new (but mostly old).
Do you like theater? Going out to eat? Shopping? The outdoors? Music? If you and your friends are arguing over how to spend your weekend, or if you and your signicant other are looking for ways to jazz up your free time, then check out Normans Medieval Faire. It encompasses a little bit of everything, allowing guests to forget their current reality and immerse themselves in yesteryear. The 38th Annual Medieval Fair is at Reaves Park in Norman from April 4 - 6, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. This is one of the largest events of the year so popular that theres no more room for it to grow, requiring coordinators to rene their mission and become selective about what will be featured. But that doesnt mean there wont be new attractions. There are more new artists than ever before thanks to the hard work of our Artisan Vendor Jury this year, said Ann Marie Eckart, Medieval Fair coordinator. One of the most interesting is Dry Bones Studios, which makes jewelry, sculptures, articulations and more out of yes thats right bones. She added that there would be many new performers, including Didgeman, Cast In Bronze, Einini, Smee the Singing Executioner, The Unpronounceable Irish Band, and Bob the Incredible Juggler. Many more can be seen on the website. The Medieval Fair began almost 40 years ago because OU professors and grad students wanted to celebrate Shakespeares birthday on the South Oval. From there it moved to the Duck Pond, and then moved one nal time to Reaves Park (which has the advantage of nearby Lloyd Noble parking). Today its a popular celebration to welcome spring and enjoy myriad entertainment options: sword combat, acrobatics, comedy, petting zoos, costume contests and, of course, jousting. According to Eckart, The most popular attractions are a close tie between the Joust, the Human Combat Chess Match and Barely Balanced. The Saltfork Blacksmith Artists are probably the most popular artisans with their ery forges. For food it is always a neck-in-neck tie between the root beer booth, McGilly Sasparilly and the turkey leg vendor, Brewer Entertainment. This is also a huge event for the staff. Volunteer Kristin Morgan became plugged into the Medieval Fair in 2010 through performing in the Arthurian Order of Avalon (AOA), which is dedicated to educating members and audiences alike in Arthurian ideals, history and culture. There she was part of the human chessboard (think Harry Potter). Now she is a squire for the New Riders, a joust company. Our day starts pretty early. I help the other squires get the warhorses fed and groomed. When opening time draws near, we tack up the warhorses to get them ready for both the joust and the warhorse rides. Her favorite memory? I remember a few years ago, I met a young man who had never been on a horse before. He told me during the ride that hed probably never get another opportunity to be on a horse again. It was amazing to see his smile at the end of the ride. I very much hope he has had the opportunity to be on a horse again. Thats the beauty of the Medieval Fair: exposure to the distant, the different, the history of an era long passed and experiences you wouldnt normally have. No matter what you decide to do, it promises something new. For more information, http://www.medievalfair.org.

him to the 46th spot in ESPNs JUCO Top 50. His work ethic and dedication are his selling points, and it appears that he will likely log some minutes in this years scrimmage. Flowers is a 63, 215-pound fullback from San Antonio, Texas, who will act as an all-purpose back for the Sooners, much like the former Sooners workhorse and team captain Trey Millard. Flowers has the ability to catch the pass, run or block, racking up over 1,500 all-purpose yards and 22 touchdowns during the 2013 season. The Oklahoma backeld will need all the help they can get, following the departures of Brennan Clay and Millard, and Flowers gures to play early and often in the offense with fellow backs Keith Ford and freshman Joe Mixon. Mixon is a 62 215-pound running back from Oakley, California, who many revere as the best back in the nation. He had 1,700 rushing yards his senior season and gures to vie for playing time with Keith Ford, a former highly touted recruit from Cypress, Texas, now in his sophomore year. Ford didnt get many chances last season at the RB position, but in his 23 carries he amassed an average of 5.8 yards. Undoubtedly thats a small sample size, but with his ability to produce yardage, and his size and vertical speed, the backeld looks to be as bruising as ever this year. Flowers and Ford will most likely be the backs on display for the University of Oklahoma Spring Football Game presented by U.S. Fleet Tracking, with Mixon arriving to campus in the fall. On the defensive end the Sooners didnt change things up too much, though they did manage to add Devante Bond, the seventh ranked OLB from Sierra College and fourth early enrollee to OU, who racked up 77 tackles in 11 games and 17 sacks with three fumble recoveries. Last season saw the emergence of Eric Striker and Dominique Alexander at the position, but many believe that Bond will nd his way onto the eld for the Spring Game. Nevertheless, whether youre trying to get a glimpse of the incoming talent for the Sooners or you simply want a great activity for the whole family, check out the University of Oklahoma Spring Football Game presented by U.S. Fleet Tracking. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 12 at the Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Season ticket holders will receive access to free tickets for the game, as well as an opportunity to sit in their usual seats. Current OU students can get free admission by showing their OU ID at the gate the day of the event. Sooner Kids Club members and children under ve will also be admitted free of charge. Tickets can be found online at a link on the Sooner Sports website or by calling the OU Athletics Ticket Ofce at (405) 325-2424 or toll free at (800) 456-4668. The price for a single ticket is $5, until April 9, when the price increases to $10. So buy them while theyre cheap! The OU Spring Game presented by U.S. Fleet Tracking will feature the third annual Big Boomer BBQ, where fans can enjoy live music and amusement park rides while chowing down on some hickory-smoked hunks of meat. The OU Spring Sale will also be back this year, featuring local vendors selling ofcially licensed OU gear at dramatically reduced prices. All of the seating for the game is general admission, so if you want to be close to the action, be sure to get there early to have time to check out all of the events before the action starts. All normal game day policies as far as bags and other permissible items will be in place, so leave your kayaks and medieval swords outside. Parking will be free at all lots around campus, so if youre looking to make a day of it, why not stop by the mens baseball eld at 4 p.m. as they host Texas at Mitchell Park.
