WHAT IS HONOR FLIGHT?

Honor Flight is a non-profit organization, whose main purpose is to remember and respect
America’s Veterans for their sacrifices for our freedoms. Honor Flight will fly these heroes to
Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials, at no cost to the Veteran. After all,
they have given enough. Veterans are accompanied by trained volunteer guardians who
pay their own expenses simply for the honor of serving these American heroes.

OZARKS HONOR FLIGHT

Ozarks Honor Flight started in August 2009 as a grass-roots efforts by a small group of
local folks wanting to honor our local heroes for their service. An Honor Flight already
established in Central Missouri planted the seeds for our area, sharing their triumphs and
struggles to ensure Ozarks Honor Flight successfully gets off the ground. Ozarks Honor
Flight is an official hub of the National Honor Flight.

WHY NOW?
According to recent statistics, 1000-1500 World War II Veterans are dying each day. Thus
the mission of Honor Flight becomes even more important. Time is running out to make
certain that these defenders who so bravely fought for our freedoms get to see the memo-
rial built to honor them.

do...I’m not a
hero.

ABOUT THE JOURNEY

Ozarks Veterans will depart from Springfield Regional Airport and begin their emotional
journey to Washington, D.C. At every corner, there will be fanfare, as the community will
be invited as we send our local Veterans on their journey and then welcome them back
home from their day-long trip.

The Veterans once in Washington, D.C. will get on a bus that will take them around so that
they can view all of the monuments, making a stop at the World War II monument, allow-
ing them to remember their service to our great country and to reflect on what they left
behind. After the Veterans have had plenty of time to view the monuments, they then set
out to visit Arlington Cemetery. After their visit to Arlington, they embark on their journey
home, where they are greeted on the plane with letters from home.

For a day, Ozarks Veterans will be treated like royalty. For a day, they will be given the wel-
come home that many of them never received.

heroes...but, no not
me.

ABOUT THE CARE ON THE TRIP

Each Veteran is assigned a trained guardian on their Honor Flight. For every three ambula-
tory Veterans, there is one guardian. Veterans with special needs have one guardian who
is responsible for only that one veteran. Guardians pay their own way to Washington, D.C.
While they are volunteering their time, they pay their own expenses for the honor of serv-
ing these American heroes. In addition medical volunteers, including a physician will be
on the flight to ensure the safety of each Veteran.

ABOUT THE WWII MEMORIAL

The World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. was not open to the public until 2004-
-nearly 60 years after the end of the great war. The monument honors the 16 million who
served in the U.S. armed forces, the more than 400,000 who died, and all who supported
the war effort from home. It is symbolic of the spirit, sacrifice and commitment of the
American people.

ABOUT ARLINGTON CEMETERY

To many people Arlington Cemetery represents many different things. For some, it is a
place of historical significance--where American legends are buried, to others it is the final
resting place of their fellow soldiers, their friends. Arlington Cemetery is the national cem-
etery to honor our nation’s heroes.
