    In Vietnam district level hospitals are estimated to be responsible for delivering about 40% of the health care needs of the public. But, district hospitals have limited resources and capacities, resulting in limitations in providing sufficient primary health care services and ultimately leads to a situation where provincial and national hospitals are overloaded. For this reason, Nam Dinh Health Service Department, FHI 360 and The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) partnered to create and launch the ‘Enhancing capacities of district-level hospitals in Nam Dinh province’ - a 1.5 year pilot project implemented in district hospitals in Nam Dinh province. This pilot project tested different models to improve district-level health care services through strengthening of the laboratory quality management system. Interventions implemented under this project mostly focus on improving testing performance, strengthening skills and collaboration of laboratories and doctors to interpret and use of testing results, and establishing and sustaining a laboratory quality management system.

Project Enhancing Capacities of district-level hospitals in Nam Dinh Province has been implemented by FHI 360, and Nam Dinh Provincial Health Department, with technical support from The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and funding from The U.S. Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

    ACHIEVEMENTS
    Establishment and support of a laboratory quality management system in the 11 project district hospitals Process management: Provide sufficient information to laboratory clients (physicians, patients, etc.); Appropriate collection/receipt, handling, transportation, storage, and disposal of samples; Correct testing performance and testing result report. Quality Assurance: Internal Quality Control and External Quality Assessment. Equipment and Inventory Management Biosafety
