Fair Director’s Welcome
Discovery and insight are two words that express, perhaps better than any, the distinctive character of Design Days Dubai—a character reinforced by this third edition of the fair. This year we have incorporated ‘Discover’ as a core theme, with a new initiative that gives a platform to young voices from a single country; for this section’s debut we have chosen France in collaboration with the Institut Français in the UAE. Discovery is also key among the criteria for the selection of galleries, installations and live performances, as well as building the public programme. Known as a fair that surprises and delights in equal measure, Design Days Dubai is bigger than ever and I am proud that, among the 33 galleries, are representatives from eight countries that have never before exhibited in the Middle East in addition to ten galleries from this region. With such new and diverse talent alongside renowned modern masters, the range of works being offered underlines the universality of the language of design. We are honoured to have the continued patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, whose support underlines the importance of design as a vital building block of culture. Under the aegis of our Strategic Partner, Dubai Culture & Art Authority, and in partnership with d3 Dubai Design District, we have expanded the Public Programme of seminars, talks and design performances. Following its successful debut last year, the Bespoke Design section returns to the fair. Our valued sponsor Van Cleef & Arpels stages an exhibition that celebrates the profound link between craftsmanship and design, and—in association with Tashkeel—has organised the Middle East Emergent Artist Award for its second year. Emaar underlines its commitment to design by hosting the fair for its third year and Audi Middle East—a company driven by its passion for design—also returns as a sponsor. We thank them all for their continuing collaboration. We are proud to be contributing to the global conversation about collectible design and welcome you to come and immerse yourself at the fair. I hope I will have the pleasure of meeting you here in person.

Audi
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, Good design must always express a vision. Something one can witness once again at the third edition of Design Days Dubai. Just like most artists, Audi design seeks inspiration everywhere. Ideas might arise from observing an innovative house, a classic piece of furniture or a sensational dress. The Audi designers, not unlike an artist, have to have their fingers on the pulse of the times and are guided by a variety of influences—be it from nature, architecture, art or film. As global design patron and responsible employer, Audi supports regional cultural arts at its locations. For the third year the brand with the four rings is an exclusive sponsor for Design Days Dubai, which will showcase the path-breaking works of leading design galleries and the most innovative of designers from around the world. As a progressive car manufacturer, Audi constantly develops its design philosophy with each new generation of models. Audi’s refined design language and philosophy will focus on a strong link between technology and design. You can experience this firsthand at this year’s Design Days Dubai with the display of our new Audi A8, where design and technology mesh perfectly. Audi’s most elegantly designed car will be displayed in the UAE for the first time. The Audi A8 features Matrix LED technology. The high-beam comprises 25 individual light-emitting diodes per unit which can be switched on and off or dimmed individually depending on the situation. Additional features of the new headlights are the intelligent cornering light, new-look daytime running lights and dynamic turn signals. The lighting system uses predictive route data to adjust the distribution of light in response to the current driving situation. It is a great pleasure for Audi to once again be part of Design Days Dubai. Sincerely, Trevor Hill Managing Director Audi Middle East

First established in 2005, the Algerian Agency for Culture Outreach (AARC) became a public institution in 2008. Alongside its own annual cultural programme, the agency provides a range of services to the Ministry of Culture during Algeria’s most important cultural events. The agency’s mission is threefold, including: the worldwide promotion of Algeria’s rich and diverse culture and arts; the promotion of foreign culture in Algeria; and the creation of a flow of international activities and artists’ exchanges. AARC works in the fields of visual arts and patrimony, music and performing arts, cinema and audiovisual and books and documentation, as well as organising events, supporting artists, institutions and associations’ projects and encouraging and supporting Algerian and international creators and authors, in both the creative process, in addition to promotion and broadcasting. As well as having artist-in-residence programmes to allow foreign artists to spend time in Algiers at the prestigious Villa Abdelatif, AARC offers administrative, financial and logistic assistance and accompaniment for the realisation of other cultural projects. Design Days Dubai will provide the platform for the debut of a group of young Algerian designers in the Gulf region, under the aegis of the AARC.

ART FACTUM GALLERY
BeirUT / LebaNON

Marc Baroud, Lebanon Karim Chaya for spockdesign, Lebanon Marc Dibeh, Lebanon Carlo Massoud, Lebanon

Founded in 2011 and located in a renovated former steel factory in Beirut’s industrial Quarantine District, Art Factum Gallery is devoted to presenting all forms of contemporary art and design in a fresh way. With contemporary art, the gallery focuses on bringing international artists into the artisticcultural scene of Beirut, and also projects itself onto a wider stage through participation in several international art fairs and events, as well as maintaining tight bonds with several international galleries and institutions. These local and international collaborations ensure the spreading of the artistic message to the masses—one of the gallery’s main motives. As for design, with Lebanon’s artistic spotlight shifting slightly towards the more utilitarian and three-dimensional aspect of art forms and products, Art Factum Gallery chooses mostly to endorse local designers. The gallery’s annual design show serves to introduce new talents, as well as promoting designers who have already launched their careers, all serving to emphasise the value and dynamism of contemporary Lebanese design. It is also important to highlight that the designers and the gallery itself mostly use local materials and crafts for the production of the design pieces.

Transcending the classical borders between art and design, Carpenters Workshop Gallery stands at the intersection of these two universes to achieve a perfect symbiosis. The gallery produces and exhibits functional sculptures by international rising and established artists and designers, especially those going outside their traditional territories of expression. Carpenters Workshop Gallery is actively involved in the research and production of the limitededition works exhibited—its choices guided by research of an emotional, artistic and historical relevance. The gallery is grounded in the partnership of childhood friends, Julien Lombrail and Loïc le Gaillard, who first opened a space in London’s Chelsea in 2006, in a former carpenter’s workshop. They followed this with a second space in Mayfair in 2008. The opening of a third space, in Paris in 2011, at 54 rue de la Verrerie—an address steeped in history as home to the Galerie de France for several decades—is a kind of return to their roots. The gallery’s Paris branch underlines the founders’ commitment, as well as that of Director Aurélie Julien, to the international promotion of their artists and designers.

Carwan Gallery was created when architects Pascale Wakim and Nicolas BellavanceLecompte joined their complementary cultural backgrounds to propose an extraordinary vision for contemporary design in the Middle East. The gallery’s first objective was to foster the singular relationship between designers and craftsmen through commissions. As a result, more than 15 designers from all over the world found inspiration in Middle Eastern crafts to reinvent traditional techniques and create unique contemporary objects. After three years of exhibitions in international design fairs, art centres and museums, Carwan recently opened a new space in Lebanon at Gefinor Centre in Clemenceau to showcase contemporary objects in limited editions. The gallery also provides creative and design-centered consultancy to collectors, architects and interior designers, offering the possibility to receive site-specific tailored services or installations.

Design Auction (Seoul Auction Est. 1998) held by _croft, was a chance to prove that wellmade design sold popularly as art objects. The event was praised as a new platform for communication between art and design, and has now become one of most renowned art and design auctions in Korea. _croft has planned various exhibitions since the company’s founding, introducing the work of up-and-coming designers, as well as timeless classics from all over the world to a Korean audience. The gallery aims to highlight emerging designers and brands, and to influence design trends by presenting new projects and inspiring design objects.

Erastudio ApartmentGallery
MilaN / ITaly

Gunjan Gupta, India Anne Bianchet, Italy / France

Erastudio Apartment-Gallery was established in 2010 by founder and architect Patrizia Tenti. The philosophy of Erastudio—design as architecture—is reflected in the structure of its two spaces in the historical building of Via Palermo 5 in Milan. Each space is restored according to the concept, ‘less is more’. The name ‘Erastudio Apartment’ also recalls the atmosphere where the design works are presented. The gallery focuses exclusively on unique pieces, prototypes, artist’s proofs, limited editions and special projects, displaying works from such historical masters as Ettore Sottsass, Piero Fornasetti and Carlo Scarpa, as well as that of young designers. Erastudio works in between architecture and site-specific design, providing consultancy and assistance on the interaction of design pieces with a particular environment. This has given rise to unique collaborations with artists and architects such as Gaetano Pesce and Vincenzo De Cotiis, and designers such as Gunjan Gupta—presented for the first time at Design Days Dubai 2013—for the realisation of projects exclusive to the gallery. Since 2012, Erastudio has been an active participant in the world’s best fairs for collectible design.

PARIS / FRANCE

Provenance private collection Japanese Burners Cast bronze 18th century. 78 x 50 x 30 cm

As an invitation to a new art de vivre, Benjamin Steinitz has created an environment in which period boiserie panelling and antique décors blend with a variety of furniture and objets d’art. Both a continuation and a renewal, Galerie Steinitz moved in September 2009 to larger premises, occupying an entire hôtel particulier located at 77 rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honoré, facing the prestigious Bristol Hotel. Now presided over by Benjamin Steinitz, Galerie Steinitz—founded in 1968 by his father Bernard Steinitz—has attained world-wide recognition. The gallery's presentation and discovery of rare objects of quality has permitted it to establish a privileged relationship with museums and cultural institutions such as the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Jerusalem Museum and the J.P. Getty Museum of Los Angeles. Dating from the Haute Epoque through to the twentieth century, this collection includes French and European works, as well as rare pieces from India, Russia and South America. Forming a unique collection and testifying to an unrivalled mise-en-scene, Galerie Steinitz establishes a dialogue between antique objects and modern quality pieces—a true signature of the “goût Steinitz”.

In Tuscany, between Pisa and Carrara, at the foot of the marble quarries from which masterpieces have been extracted, is the town of Pietrasanta. Designed, produced and assembled one by one through the ancient techniques of Tuscan artisans, each of the ‘beaux objets’ in this space are unique. Become a benchmark for quality and originality, Southern Guild encourages collaboration and discourse, aiming to stimulate and provoke the local design industry. With continual evolution and constant discovery being key elements of Design Days Dubai’s philosophy, the fair this year introduces a new section called 'Discover'. Its guiding principle is to focus on the emergence of a contemporary design scene in a single country—in particular, a country that is better known for traditional design. This idea of a rediscovery or rebirth of design within an established design culture is a more intriguing and less obvious approach than focusing on a country where a consciousness of design is only beginning to emerge. Dedicated to France in 2014, the debut edition of Discover is a joint initiative with the Institut Français in the UAE and will present four Paris-based galleries: Galerie Gosserez, Galerie S.Bensimon, Next Level Galerie and Ymer & Malta. The four are distinguished not only by their youth as institutions—none has been established for more than five years—but also by the freshness of their approach and willingness to challenge boundaries with the artists they represent and the works they commission. Although the galleries will present mostly work by French artistdesigners, thus highlighting the emergence of a new generation in their country, nationality is not a criterion. Rather, through the artists and works presented—regardless of their origins—the galleries will express a specifically French point of view on contemporary design as an evolution from the country’s long artistic and aesthetic tradition. For this reason the Discover galleries will not be separated from the other exhibitors. As Design Days Dubai has always demonstrated, by presenting the avant-garde alongside modern classics, the cutting-edge of design is not a world of its own, but simply part of the cultural continuum.

Ingrid Michel, France Frédéric Pain, France

Founded by Ingrid Michel and Frédéric Pain, Binôme devises and realises its own furniture and sculpture. Borrowing equal inspiration from art and nature, the works are produced as unique pieces or in limited series in Binôme’s Burgundy-based workshop. The brand's inspiration comes from all that is observable, including the environment, fauna and flora. After studying wood-carving at the prestigious Ecole Boulle in Paris, Ingrid Michel and Frédéric Pain's skills were soon in demand in film and contemporary art circles. This rewarding work would inspire their personal projects. Combining craft procedures with cutting-edge techniques, they dare to create unlikely combinations, such as smooth, light resin paired with solid, untreated oak. They assemble organic shapes that evoke the vegetal or mineral world with contemporary elements and their creations enjoy pure, sensual and reassuring lines, with a chromatic palette that is infinite, in addition to colour combinations that range from daring to minimalist. In the world of Binôme, everything seems opposed yet coexists in perfect harmony.

Based in Abu Dhabi, Swisslinx is one the Gulf’s leading educational consultants with links to some of Europe’s leading academies, including leaders in arts and design. At Design Days Dubai, Swisslinx presents two of these academies, NABA (Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti Milano) and Domus Academy. NABA is the largest private arts and design academy in Italy and, in 1980, was the first to be recognised by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR). Offering academic diplomas equivalent to first and second level university degrees, NABA’s objective is to challenge rigid academic tradition and introduce visions and languages that are closer to contemporary artistic practices and to the creative professions. Founded in Milan in 1982, Domus Academy was the first post-graduate design school in Italy. An open project focusing on Italian design, architecture and fashion, it offers master's courses in 12 disciplines. Over the years Domus Academy has asserted its importance as a place for post-graduate education, as well as a research lab investigating innovation and design topics. In 2009, both NABA and Domus Academy joined the Laureate International Universities, an international network including more than 75 accredited institutions in 30 countries.

Climatology: Respired Wooden skin
Elaine Ng Yan Ling Celebrating Nature’s Survival Tactics / Wooden Skin Art Installation Smart Veneer, metallic yarn, reflective fabric, thermo-chromatic pigment 55 pieces 2013 Photography by Elaine Ng Yan Ling Portrait by Sun YI

Created in 2013 by Elaine NG Yan Ling and first presented to the public by Isabelle Pascal as part of the spring 2013 installation at Wuhao Curated Shop in Beijing, 'Climatology' celebrates nature’s survival tactics and reflects the changing seasons. Originally designed for a Beijing site—a former imperial garden—and engineered to the city’s climate, 'Climatology' is a new series of experimental smart textiles derived from the design concept of Naturology. Layers of veneer are combined with fabric, thermo-chromatic resin and reflective surfaces to create objects that adapt to fluctuations in light, temperature and humidity. Each piece, inspired by the natural living behaviour of the desert plant Selaginella Lepidoplylla (also known as the ‘resurrection plant’ or ‘false rose of Jericho’), is handcrafted and set in shape. As the materials mature, the objects begin to work together, changing according to their surroundings. They work individually or as a group, affected by the memory of their construction and responding to nature’s invisible energy. About the designer: A graduate of London’s Central Saint Martin’s School, TED Fellow and Founder of The Fabrick Lab in Hong Kong, Elaine Ng Yan Ling is a British-Chinese smart textile designer. Her work, based on bio-mimicry and combining traditional crafts with modern technologies, has been exhibited at the V&A in London, Harbour Front Centre in Toronto, Milan Design Week with Lidewij Edelkoort, TextielMuseum in Tilburg, Netherlands, Espace EDF Art Foundation in Paris and at Wuhao Beijing.

by ECAL DESIGN by Benjamin MuZZin
'Full Turn' explores the notion of the third dimension, with the desire to get out of the usual frame of a flat screen. For this, Benjamin Muzzin’s work consists mainly in exploring and experimenting with different devices for displaying images, trying to give to animations a sense of volume in space. The resulting machine works with the rotation of two screens placed back to back, creating a three-dimensional animated sequence that—unlike any other type of screen—offers viewers a 360-degree view. Due to the persistence of vision, the shapes that appear on the screen turn into kinetic light sculptures; the animated figures seem to float in the air, like a single intangible bright stream evolving through time. About the designer: Benjamin Muzzin studied at ECAL (University of Art and Design Lausanne) in Switzerland and has a bachelor's degree in Media & Interaction Design. His work is mostly centred on digital moving images, experimenting with displays other than the usual flat screens. Supported by Baccarini Foundation.

DESIGN DAYS DUBAI 121

by Michael Anastassiades presented by Carwan Gallery
Via his 'Miracle Chips' installation Michael Anastassiades has achieved the seemingly impossible: making marble look light and flexible. His inspiration for these beautiful chips—almost a metre in diameter—came in large part from the red cellophane fortunetelling fish that used to come in Christmas crackers and would curl up in the palm of your hand. Anastassiades teamed up with the Tuscan marble specialist Henraux, of Monte Altissimo, near Pietrasanta, setting its technicians the challenge of pushing the limits of what is technologically possible while preserving the inherent qualities of the marble. About the designer: Michael Anastassiades’ philosophy is to produce exceptionally designed objects of permanent value. Having, for years, produced his own work in very limited quantities, Anastassiades set up a company in 2007 to increase the availability of his objects. To fabricate his pieces he has located small family-run workshops around the world, choosing them for their unique manufacturing skills, with an emphasis on traditional uses of materials. Anastassiades introduced his first collection after two years of meticulous preparation. The pieces combine fine detailing with honestly expressed materials, reinforcing the elegant simplicity of the designs. Glass is free-blown, stone is hand-carved and metal finishes are bespoke, with all products hand-made in limited editions. Stamped with the designer’s mark, every piece is manufactured in accordance with the purity of his original vision.

DESIGN DAYS DUBAI 123

by Tom Price, presented by Industry Gallery In Coorporation with British Council
The 'PP Trysting Tree' installation is both an expression of the capabilities of the material, polypropylene pipe, and an observation of our understanding and acceptance of beauty. The trees are not intended to be accurate representations of natural forms, but evoke an atmosphere similar to what one might experience standing amid a cluster of cherry trees in full bloom. The longevity and ready availability of the industrially manufactured materials used to construct the installation stands in stark contrast to the ephemerality and natural beauty of the cherry trees and blossoms that it echoes. The pipes have to be bent individually, a laborious task employing a combination of heat and ropes to contort them into interesting shapes. The blossom is made from thousands and thousands of sections of pipe, which are individually cut then arranged on a specially constructed hot plate and partially melted on one side. This turns them into semi-flexible sheets that can be twisted, curved and fixed to the branches of the trees. About the designer: A London native, Tom Price attended several renowned schools including the Royal College of Art. This background in fine art informs his approach to design, which is typically very sculptural in both appearance and concept. The vast majority of Price’s furniture and collections are anything but conventional. Represented in collections around the world, Price’s pieces are also in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco and the Denver Art Museum.

TheObsessiveDrafter

'TheObsessiveDrafter' is a tech-art installation that questions both creation and representation. A large robotic arm made of 3D-printed parts, aluminium tubes, stepper motors, drives and controllers, it draws murals and portraits on walls and is able to work on a very large scale. 'TheObsessiveDrafter' was designed, programmed and produced by Guillaume Crédoz and Nareg Karaoghlanian. It is autonomous and has the ability to feel human presence, establish eye contact and immediately draw a portrait of a person standing in front of it. During Design Days Dubai, the machine will draw a seven-by-three-metre mural over five continuous days. Every time a human interrupts it, 'TheObsessiveDrafter' will pause its work on the large piece, establish eye contact and then draw the portrait of the person, before continuing its main work. Because the pauses put the machine at risk of not having time to finish the main work, it groans at the disturbances. About the designers: Guillaume Crédoz is a multidisciplinary architect who, for 15 years, has taught and researched numerous projects. Prior to studying architecture, Crédoz was educated in the fine arts. A guest professor at Université de Montréal, associate to research and creation Lab at Université du Québec & Montréal and artist resident at the Society for Art and Technologies (SAT), he has also collaborated with numerous international architecture studios on competitions and projects. His main occupation at present is running a 3D Printing & Rapid Manufacturing workshop in Beirut, the first of its kind in the Middle East. Crédoz is also the founder of Mimaj, an architectural visualisation company, and Ghouyoum, an architecture design practice. Nareg Karaoghlanian is a fluid mechanics engineer who teaches and directs a laboratory at the American University of Beirut.

Like the results of mineralisation—when organic sources meet and meld with other substances to make new forms—designers Chen Chen and Kai Williams’ cross-sectioned pieces interpret what happens when the mountains of forgotten excess and scrap material linger so long that they become fused. The designers discuss in their work the fact that, despite knowing that nature turns all of its leftovers into beautiful stones over millions and millions of years, humans turn theirs into garbage in seconds. To change this course, Chen and Williams will teach, via a workshop, their skills of creating ‘fossils from mankind’. At Design Days Dubai, the designers will demonstrate how to create vessels— one vessel a day, each one 36 inches tall—with a dripping cement technique that they have developed. Pratt Institute graduates, Chen Chen and Kai Williams, founded their eponymous New York design studio in 2011, working in furniture, products and materials.

For Design Days Dubai, gt2p is showing for the first time 'LESS CPP', a project that explores the idea of how to create standard machines that generate non-standard results. The project mixes analogue numerical controls with traditional materials and techniques, integrated into one real-time process, thus suggesting that parametric design is not necessarily a digital computation methodology. For this purpose, the studio works in the translation of computational logic and automation processes in the material world through an analogue machine that allows the articulation of physical variables in real time. Such variables include gravity, fluid weight, fabric tension, size and material, in addition to position and number of anchor points in XYZ, horizontal limits to get a flat bottom, slip-casting volumes, dry times, pottery viscosity, types of pottery, water quantity and thickness of shell, among others. A four-person design team, gt2p ('Great Things to People') is based in Santiago, Chile. It focuses on research and experimentation in digital crafting, promoting new encounters between technologies and the richness of the local, expressed in traditional materials and techniques.

by Rolf BrugginK (Studio Rolf.fr), presented by Galerie Judy Straten, IN COOPERATION WITH THE GENTEREAL CONSULATE OF THE NETHERLANDS
Taking place daily during Design Days Dubai, the onsite performances by Rolf Bruggink (StudioRolf.fr) are about transforming a saucer into a seat. This eccentric concept embodies the theme of symbiosis, which is central to the Netherlands-based designer/ architect’s work. Through simple and rational processes, Bruggink transforms the prosaic into the poetically expressive. Bruggink will make his stools from concrete composed of sand from the desert, combined with local ceramics. With these two local products he will make a range of contemporary pieces by combining different colours of sand with different designs of saucers. The process consists of making a mould, placing the saucer and concrete inside of it and, eventually, removing the mould for drying. During the fair, visitors will be able to observe the different stages of the process every day.

KASA

Opened in late 2012, KASA is home to the Khalid Shafar brand—a space where all of the brand's designs are permanently on display. The site of KASA, in the heart of Dubai’s old Ras Al Khor industrial area, was chosen with the vision of transforming this area into a district for design—much as the industrial area of Al Quoz has become Dubai's arts district. Reflecting Khalid Shafar’s ambition to be the touchstone for design in the UAE, KASA will showcase original Emirati objects, designed and made in the UAE. The space will offer designers, collectors and researchers—both national and international—a unique perspective on the aesthetics of UAE design, while shedding light on the influences of local crafts. Visitors can request private viewings with the designer by appointment.

KASA Opening Hours: Saturday – Thursday 9am – 3pm Fridays – Closed No. 7, Street 22a – Community 612 Ras AlKhor Industrial 1 PO Box 3492 Dubai UAE info@khalidshafar.com khalidshafar.com/kasa/where

The first park was opened on the Al Majaz Waterfront in March 2013.

d3

DUBAI DESIGN DISTRICT
Dubai’s design and fashion industry has a great opportunity to put itself on an equal footing with the likes of London, Paris and New York but to unlock the industry’s full potential, it will need to be carefully and strategically developed by the people and organisations that know the industry best. Dubai already has a growing creative community and we at d3 want to maximise the contribution of the art, design and fashion community towards achieving Dubai’s strategic ambitions of the on-going growth of the Emirate, diversifying the economy, encouraging enterprise and growing the talent pool. As the home of the regional and international design community, d3 will provide a centre of gravity for international designers and design enthusiasts. Investors, designers, and brands from all over the world are welcome at d3 and there is a huge variety of ways to get involved. From offices to retail units, manufacturing space to exhibition galleries, we are creating a community that will act as the heart of the industry within the Middle East. d3 aims to act as a platform for innovation and ideas with a view to stimulate economic growth. To achieve this, we have created one location where customers from Dubai and tourists from overseas, have access to a unique bouquet of local, regional and international design offerings. By acting as the link between thoughts, beliefs, opinions, cultures d3 encourages cultural exchanges between the art, design and fashion communities. Since launching d3, there has been a huge amount of interest from international designers, design academies and fashion brands wanting to speak to us about becoming part Dubai’s design story by locating their activities in d3. Our commitment to the goals of Dubai’s Tourism 2020 Vision, combined with our network with international firms will enable us to nurture local talent and promote home-grown designers on an international scale. In addition to positioning Dubai as a genuine community for the design and fashion industries that can compete on the global stage, d3 aims to increase the role of contemporary regional fashion and identify the specific needs of the regional and global companies considering Dubai and d3 as a base.
