OutdoorAcademyDescription:
TheOutdoorAcademyisforthesurvivalistoroutdoor enthusiastandprovidesanopportunitytolearnand practiceoutdoorrelatedskillsinanexperiential environment.Multiplecoursesareavailableandwillbe scheduledonarotatingbasis.Theacademywillfocus onofferingcoursesforcollegecreditand/ornationally recognizedcertificationorinstructorcredentials.The academyisofferedinapartnershipbetweenSouthwest VirginiaCommunityCollegeandBreaksInterstatePark. Dependingontheselectedcourseofferings,costscould includetuition,materials,mealsandfacilityfees.The costofeachcoursemayvary. Theupcomingclasseswillprepareparticipantsforthe experienceoflivingoutdoors,howtopreparefor theirexperience,andwhatdoifthingsdonotgo accordingtoplan.Withouttheproperknowledgeand preparation,awildernessoutingcanturnintoadisaster andevenleadtodeath.Masteryoftheskillsand conceptstaughtduringtheacademywillinstill confidence,helpalleviatefear/apprehensionandadd awarenessofwhatcouldresultfrompoororcareless decisions.Theskillsandconceptlearnedrelatedto outdoorlivingcanbeappliedtomanyaspectsoflife includingemergencypreparednessoreveryday routines.Theconceptssuchaslayering,outdoor cooking,wintercamping,etc.canbeappliedtosuch situationsaslosingelectricityinasnowstormand bringingrealitytotheboyscoutmotto:BePrepared. Conceptscoveredwillincludethebasicsofwilderness survival,firstbuilding,knots,lashings,search&rescue, dressingfortheoutdoors,selectionofequipment, learningandpracticingtheprinciplesofLeaveNoTrace,

andWildernessFirstAid.Developtheskillsforan enjoyableoutdoorexperiencebyenrollinginthe OutdoorAcademytoday.

RPK103PreparationforWildernessAdventure Coversthebackgroundknowledgeneededtobe preparedforatripinthewilderness.Examineswhatto doinaplannedandanunplannedextendedwilderness experience.Focusesonwhatitemstopackandtheskills neededtoensureasuccessfulouting.1credit(May19 and20)HybridCourseWildernessSurvival101 RPK140LandUseEthics Examinestheimpactsofhumanactivityontheoutdoor environment,specificallylandsusedforbackpacking, hiking,andcamping.Addressesthehistoryand philosophyoftheLeaveNoTracemovement,regarding sustainablebackcountryand"athome"practices, visitordemandsandresourcemanagementchallenges. 1credit(May21and22)LeaveNoTrace RPK160WildernessFirstAid Examinestheroleofoutdoorprofessionalsin wildernessmedicineandtheresponse,careandrescue ofoutdoorparticipantsinnonurbanenvironments. Providesintensive,indepthtrainingintheareasof cardiopulmonaryresuscitation,patientassessment system,bodysystems,environmentalinjuries/ conditions,anaphylaxis,lifting/moving/extrication, patientcarries,andbackcountrymedicine.2credits (May22,23and24).HybridClass.WildernessFirst Aid.
