Earth and Moon _____________________________________________________________________________ Central Focus/Big Idea: Students will recognize the major components and patterns observed in the Earth/moon/sun system and explain the causes of day and night. Subject of this lesson: The rotation of the Earth around the sun and the moon around the Earth. Grade Level: 3rd Grade NC Essential Standard(s): 3.E.1 Recognize the major components and patterns observed in the earth/moon/sun system. 3.E.1.1 Recognize that the earth is part of a system called the solar system that includes the sun
(a star), planets, and many moons and the earth is the third planet from the sun in our solar system.

Next Generation Science Standard(s): Earth's Place in the Universe. Students who demonstrate understanding can: 5-ESS1-2. Represent data in graphical displays to reveal patterns of daily changes in length and direction of shadows, day and night, and the seasonal appearance of some stars in the night sky. Disciplinary Core Idea: ESS1.B Earth and the solar system - The Earths orbit and rotation, and the orbit of the moon around the Earth cause observable patterns. 21st Century Skills: COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION - Communicate Clearly by using communication for a range of purposes (e.g. to inform, instruct, motivate and persuade) INITIATIVE AND SELF-DIRECTION - Work Independently - Monitor, define, prioritize and complete tasks without direct oversight. CRITICAL THINKING AND PROBLEM SOLVING - Use Systems Thinking - Analyze how parts of a whole interact with each other to produce overall outcomes in complex systems. Scientific Vocabulary: revolution, rotation, axis, sphere, orbit

Instructional Objective: Students will recognize the major components and patterns observed in the Earth/moon/sun system and explain the causes of day and night. Prior Knowledge (student): The Earth rotates and revolves around the Sun. Content Knowledge (teacher): Teacher needs to know how to explain rotation vs revolution and that the Earth rotates on an axis and revolves around the Sun. The moon revolves around the Earth. Accommodations for special needs (individual and/or small group): Provided visual aids for visual learners, hands on project for kinetic learners and explanation for auditory learners. For anyone needing help, they will be placed with a partner to help guide them. Materials and Technology requirements: Power point presentation with video clips construction paper, connector prongs, scissors, markers (enough for class) Total Estimated Time: 30 minutes Source of lesson: http://www.pinterest.com/pin/165577723772003607/ http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/solarsystem/ day-on-Earth.htm Safety considerations: NA

Content and Strategies (Procedure)

Engage: Teacher will remind students of prior learning. Power point with vocabulary words will be on the board to help remind students of earlier learning. Teacher will ask the students what the words mean or help remind them of their earlier learning. Students will watch the video. http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/solarsystem/ day-on-Earth.htm Explore: Teacher will show the students the supplies and explain to them about making a model showing rotation and revolution. A model will already be made for children to view as needed and shown how it should work once it is completed. Teacher will pass out enough supplies for each students to make a sun, an earth and a moon and use construction paper and prongs to secure them to show the rotation of the earth around the sun and the moon around the earth. The children can decorate them as they like. Teacher will walk around and observe students as they make their sun, earth and moon. Explanation: Students will make models with supplies. After model is completed the teacher will ask questions like, "Can anyone remember how the earth moves? What is the imaginary line it turns on? What is it called when the earth moves around the sun? Can you use the model you made to show how rotation and revolution works? What is the length of one rotation of the earth? How many days does it take for the earth to revolve around the sun?" Elaborate: Teacher will give students a writing prompt to write four facts they have learned about the Sun, Earth and Moon. Evaluate: Summative evaluation on the questions answered by the children during Explanation and a writing prompt for four facts the children have learned. To be complete after the lesson is taught as appropriate Assessment Results of all objectives/skills:
