Abstract Everyday companies grow and grow, some more than others. Our nation has always been based off one thing, competition. People compete, companies compete, everybody competes. Most strive for one thing for one thing, money. In our food industry today, four companies own a large majority of the business. This takes away the founding principle of competition and forms what is called a monopoly. Although this might mean for these four companies to not make as much money, monopolies should not exist because it negatively affects everyone else including the workers, the customers, and the economy.

Brigham Young University Law Review, 397-420. http://0www.lexisnexis.com.lib.utep.edu/hottopics/lnacademic/ Thomas goes in depth of what a monopoly really is and how it affects our economy. He writes about if a monopoly is a good thing or not. He says that they are not favored in a free market economy but sometimes there are exceptions. This paper is considered a peer reviewed article and is published in a university journal. There is no question in if this is a credible source or not. The article is published in the Brigham Young University Law Review, in which Brigham Young University is a top university. This paper will fit in good in my essay as it describes what a monopoly does to the economy. Although this article does not mention food at all it is an important part of my argument. Food monopolies are not different than any other kinds of monopolies. They all have the same harmful effects on the economy. This article is a good way to introduce monopolies in general. 2. This article also goes in depth of monopolies and how exactly they work. There are even formulas on what makes a monopoly a monopoly. The article also gives detail on how exactly monopolies take control of the market. This article is a peer reviewed article published in the Hyperion International Journal of Econophysics & New Economy. This article also gives no biased view if monopolies are best. There are just straight facts on how monopolies really are. Like the Thomas article, this article really helped me understand what monopolies do. So I feel it is important for the reader to understand how exactly monopolies work. Also like the Thomas article, it does not mention food industries at all. But what is important is the reader will actually know what the food industry is doing to their customers exactly. 3. Posner, P.A. (1975). The Social Costs of Monopoly and Regulation. Journal of Political Economy, 83(4), 807-828. http://0-www.jstor.org.lib.utep.edu/stable/1830401 This article is very interesting because it talks about the social costs of monopolies. It states that public regulation in the end has more of a social cost than a private monopoly would. Although they are estimates, the conclusion is unlike any other and goes against a lot of beliefs. This article is part of a really well known journal in the economic world. This article has 47 references so the author really did his research. The journal is also published by the University of Chicago Press which is a very credible source. This article can be used in my paper in many ways. It gives a different point of view that maybe monopolies are a good thing and less harmful than public regulation. Even though it is

not about food specifically, this article can help argue the side that these big food monopolies are not necessarily a bad thing. 4. The Economic Cost of Food Monopolies. It really shows how limited how food choices are in our country. It gives exact percentages on how much monopolies really own in the industry. Although there is no specific author, this page gives good solid information. It is slightly biased, but numbers do not lie and this page gives numbers. Foodandwaterwatch.org is also a non-profit organization which gives it more credibility. This article is useful to me because of the numbers it provides. It shows how much these large corporations own in the food industry. The article is really interesting because it is not directly biased but the numbers give it away because it is shocking. 5. The Monsato Family. (2013) gmeducation.org. http://www.gmeducation.org/latestnews/p207220-the%20monsanto%20monopoly.html This article goes into depth of one of the main food monopolies today, the Monsato family. It gives really hard evidence to prove that these companies are monopolies. It does not just talk about the Monsato family but other companies Syngenta and DuPont. This article has no specific author but the information does sound credible. It uses information given by people like Philip Howard, a researcher at Michigan State. Gmeducation.org is also a nonprofit organization to provide awareness about food and farming. Although the information might be biased the numbers that provided are backed up.
