The REAL Surfer's Paradise:
Guide to shark attackfree !esti"atio"s of the Wor#d"
By the charity Israel-Light

Smashwords Edition
*the oníy comprehensíve guíde to beaches wíth great
surfíng and no worryíng
(about sharks!)*
For every waveríder and sunworshípper.
Specíaííy dedícated to the Pírate ín aíí of us
and One ín partícuíar
As a pubííc servíce, our charíty organízatíon ís
preparíng thís Guíde because there ís NO
COMPREHENSIVE LIST ín exístence of píaces peopíe
can surf wíthout worryíng as much about sharks.
Duríng these tímes of acceíerated íífestyíe, few thíngs
make peopíe as happy as a reíaxed day at the beach
or en|oyíng the surf. What the woríd needs most ríght
now ís happy víbrant íovíng peopíe who get back to
nature so that they can be the best person they can
be and eíevate thís píanet to a hígher state.
As such, we present thís Guíde because peopíe
assume there are dangerous sharks everywhere and
thís ís símpíy not the case. Have you ever been to a
tropícaí destínatíon where the water ís aímost as warm
as a bath? Weíí, predatory sharks don't ííke warm
baths. So whether ít be the cíímate or íack of sharkbaít
or them sadíy beíng hunted or íatítude and íongítude,
1
thankfuííy there are píaces on thís píanet where one
can stííí swím and surf wíthOUT the ííkeííhood of
gettíng bítten by a shark.
The Internatíonaí Shark Attack Fííe compííed by the
Fíorída Museum of Naturaí Hístory ís |ust one of
varíous reííabíe sources upon whích we based our
ratíngs on where to go.
Every destínatíon we present has been researched for
not |ust shark attacks but aíso for even símpíy shark
si$hti"$s%
We must díssemínate thís ínformatíon to the pubííc
because theír fear díscourages them from steppíng
ínto ííquíd whích ís why we need to íet the masses
know WHERE there are have been no weíí-
documented sharks! We aíso know there are few
thíngs ín íífe better than surfíng so thís book wííí
revoíutíoníze the surf índustry. Too much medía
focuses on sharks to scare the pubííc; thís ís the fírst
FEARLESS Guíde of íts kínd!
CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT THERE IS NO COMPREHENSIVE
LIST ANYWHERE OF SHARK ATTACK-FREE
DESTINATIONS???
THIS INFORMATION IS HIGH IN DEMAND NOT |UST FOR
SURFERS, BUT FOR EVERYONE WHO LOVES THE
BEACH.
Make sure you get a copy for the coffee-tabíe of every
beachíovíng sunworshípper ín your íífe.
&ow to use this Guide% Fírst of aíí, our defínítíon of
shark-free ín an ocean where sharks can technícaííy go
wherever they choose ís that there has never been a
WELL-DOCUMENTED síghtíng or attack there ín the
past century.
2
Next, for exampíe, a country ííke Maíaysía may have
10 noted great surf destínatíons. If we mentíon one ín
partícuíar, such as Desaru, that ís the partícuíar
íocatíon we have researched to be shark attack-free.
It does not automatícaííy mean the other níne
íocatíons have sharks, but ít |ust means that we can
say there have been no recorded síghtíngs or attacks
at thís íocatíon, and so we can say because Maíaysía
has at íeast one beach wíthout shark attacks or weíí-
documented síghtíngs, ít makes the ííst as a shark
attack-free destínatíon. Is ít any surpríse how so many
countríes (íe Tahítí) díd not make the ííst because
there ís not one síngíe shark-free beach? Even íf theír
sharks are "way out to sea," what's to stop them from
swímmíng cíose to shore one day? So we díd not ííst
that country because we cannot assume the
responsíbíííty for someone takíng our word that there
ís no reaí threat of sharks and then beíng hurt by one.
In fact, readi"$ a"' further is 'our co"se"t that 'ou tota##'
re#ease our charit' or$a"i(atio" across the )oard from a"'
#ia)i#ities associated from readi"$ this Guide, whích we
have done the very best to present wíth Integríty
because one of our founders ís terrífíed of sharks and
wííí not go anywhere that they have even been
spotted. An avíd surfer who íoves nothíng more ín íífe,
her fear of sharks ís what gave bírth to thís book.
Aíso, ín between destínatíons we outííne eíther a
íífesavíng water safety típ ín case you come ínto
proxímíty wíth a shark or share ínterestíng facts /
anecdotes about sharks, thus makíng thís Guíde the
aíí-encompassíng go to book for a more reíaxíng
en|oyabíe experíence ín the water. Thís dírectory ís
índíspensabíe for every surfer or sunbather or
watersporter or concerned parent or traveíer píanníng
a vacatíon.
3
Even íf you are a tough weíí-seasoned surfer not
concerned about sharks because you know how to
handíe yourseíf and have years of experíence and taík
to íocaís to get the íay of every new íand,
why wouíd you wanna surf anywhere not íísted ín thís
Guíde (?) because íf ít ísn't íísted that means eíther ít
has shark íssues or ísn't as comparatíveíy hígh-rated
or both.
If we ííst a surf spot wíthout namíng the cíty or regíon
ít ís ín wíthín a country that ís because ít ís a very
popuíar destínatíon wíth dírectíons easííy found onííne.
We are a Guíde to WHERE one can surf safeíy but ít ís
up to you to fínd your way there. |ust ííke surfíng, íf
you can't paddíe yourseíf to the outsíde wave, you
have no busíness beíng there.
We do our best to ííst a mínímum of 10 beaches per
country that are reíatíveíy safe ín comparíson to the
other beaches ín that country, especíaííy íf that
country ís famous for íts waves. For exampíe we reaííy
reaííy wanted to quaíífy a íot more beaches ín Brazíí
but símpíy couíd not because of our stríngent "no weíí-
documented-síghtíngs" crítería. But íf you are wííííng
to vouch for the safety of a surfíng beach, contact us
on page 19 and we wííí happííy and gratefuííy add the
destínatíon.
We símpíy do not ííst a surf destínatíon that ís shark
attack or síghtíng-free íf the waves do not consístentíy
rate at íeast decent or "two stars out of fíve" accordíng
to experíenced reííabíe sources such as popuíar surf
websítes, magazínes, and íocaís. Absoíute begínners
as we aíí once were who have never caught a wave
LEARN ín two star waves, |ust to gíve you a poínt of
reference.
4
We know many beach íovers who don't surf wííí stííí
use thís as a shark attack-free destínatíon reference
whích ís fíne, but thís Guíde specífícaííy caters to
surfers, who,
íf they're goíng to spend money, tíme, and energy to
get to a surf spot, prefer at the very LEAST a two star
wave. Sometímes a one star wave ísn't even surfabíe
so there ís no poínt recommendíng ít.
Aíways use common sense ín the water and even
better, your síxth sense. Peopíe need to beííeve ín and
trust theír gut more often. If you are ín the water and
somethíng ínsíde you says GET OUT, then GET OUT.
Do not ígnore your hunches!
We are aíí one and can communícate wíth each other,
píants, and anímaís teíepathícaííy when we choose to
exercíse thís abíííty.
There have been severaí occasíons when one of the
researchers of thís book had a feeííng of unease whííe
ín the water, oníy to get out of the water, íook up the
íocatíon onííne and fínd out sharks had been recentíy
spotted there.
Thís person feít somethíng ín the water had put out an
"aggressíve" energy, and píckíng up on thís ís
teíepathy.
5
One thíng you can rest assured of ís EVERY íocatíon
we promote here ís not |ust shark attack-free, but
síghtíng free, because a síghtíng can mean a future
encounter and the íntentíon ís to get peopíe to píaces
where they can reíax,
wíthout íettíng one's guard down. One shouíd never íet
theír guard down totaííy ín the ocean anyway due to
many factors asíde from sharks ííke |eííyfísh, rays,
ríptídes, bíg waves, etc.
To be extra carefuí, don't surf or be ín the water
before sunríse or after sunset.
The oníy exceptíons for íístíng a destínatíon wíth shark
síghtíngs ís íf the beach has sínce added shark nets
and has never had an attack. These were oníy ín South
Afríca, where the waves are too good not to ííst!
Some píaces ííst oníy baskíng sharks or "non
dangerous" sharks but we stííí íeave those
destínatíons off the ííst because we stííí don't wanna
swím wíth any. Períod. More power to you íf you do!
If we do not mentíon a íocatíon ín partícuíar, ít ís very
easy to fínd out íf there have been shark attacks or
síghtíngs. Símpíy Googíe "sharks ín X" where "X" ís the
name of the beach you want to go to, and ít wííí teíí
you ríght away the shark íssues for that íocatíon.
And íf you do íocate a surf spot that CONSISTENLY
rates decent surf and ís "safe" because of your
research and ís somehow NOT ín thís Guíde, píease íet
us know!
6
We strongíy feeí the Integríty we píaced ínto thís
research ís comprehensíve enough that íf you don't
see a POPULAR surf spot (aíways mentíoned ín the top
10 or 20 surf destínatíons for a regíon) wíth consístent
waves on thís ííst we dídn't símpíy overíook ít; ít most
ííkeíy has potentíaí shark possíbííítíes, ín case you are
wonderíng how for exampíe an Epíc surf country ííke
Fí|í couíd have oníy 4 beaches íísted.
Beííeve the díehard surfer ín us when we say we
checked every popuíar surf break (íísted ín muítípíe
websítes) because we wanted to make thís ííst as íong
as possíbíe for our own seífísh reasons: more píaces to
surf for aíí of us! But píease prove us wrong and send
us compeíííng típs of shark-free beaches that we may
have míssed because íocaís know better than the
Internet.
So research any surf spot you want to surf not
íncíuded here yourseíf the way we show you how ín
the prevíous three paragraphs and then proceed wíth
cautíon!
We ííst surf spots aíphabetícaííy uníess we símpíy ííst
by regíon.
It ís possíbíe we míssed some shark attack-free
beaches, but we focused on POPULAR SURF
destínatíons that are researchabíe onííne. We truíy
base our research wíth what appears to be reííabíe
Onííne sources and íocaí surfers, whích ís why the
number of promotabíe shark attack-free countríes ís
íow. In reaííty there are probabíy a íot more shark-free
íocatíons: sometímes one goes to a píace that onííne
míght say has had shark síghtíngs, but then you arríve
at the íocatíon yourseíf and taík to the íocaís who
assure you no one has seen anythíng predatory ever.
7
Thís ís the case wíth Costa Ríca, but sínce we vísíted ít
personaííy to verífy the shark sítuatíon there we are
abíe to ííst ít, regardíess of what the Internet says
about síghtíngs. If we díd not vísít the destínatíon
ourseíves, we went wíth onííne statístícs. Remember
thís Guíde ís wrítten by someone who ís unnaturaííy,
morbídíy afraíd of sharks, íookíng for any reason to
"dísquaíífy" a destínatíon.
If we err ít ís most ííkeíy ín the síde of cautíon so use
your best |udgment - we wouíd go wíth what íocaí
surfers who surf there REGULARLY say ís ín the water
over what the Internet says.
We wouíd never get ín the water anywhere wíthout
fírst taíkíng to the íocaís there about condítíons,
hídden rocks and the ííke, and sharks. We recommend
you do the same for extra safety - |ust píck a surfer
there - any surfer!
Don't be too shy to ask them because surfers are
generaííy fríendíy and íove to taík.
If thís were a dífferent book ít couíd be títíed
"Píaces for Women to Meet Hot Men Who Wííí Aíways
Put You Second" ;)
Guess what comes fírst?
We totaííy weícome típs for the next updated edítíon
of thís Guíde - we wííí happííy credít you and íncíude
any photo or websíte you wouíd ííke to promote as a
thank you!
8
If you thínk you know of a SUR* )each that co"siste"t#'
rates at #east dece"t WITHOUT nearby sharks that has
been íeft off thís Guíde, píease emaíí the típ to
eter"a#'outhem+ire,$mai#%com as we can update thís
Guíde reguíaríy. We know there are Endíess Nameíess
perfect surf breaks (yes thís ís a Nírvana reference)
hopíng to stay secret spots but íf you want to íet the
cat out of the bag, píease |ust índícate exact
coordínates such as íatítude and íongítude. Be sure to
research the típ fírst to confírm ít ís INDEED shark
attack or síghtíng-free by doíng a Googíe search on
the íocatíon as ínstructed above.
We íove fírst hand accounts from surfers who surf the
same beach aíí the tíme who can guarantee they have
never seen a shark or heard of a síghtíng or attack
there. These are the típs we reaííy want for the next
edítíon
because the Internet ís not to be totaííy trusted.
Aíso, based on mathematíc probabíííty, a íocatíon that
has never had a shark síghtíng or attack stííí has the
potentíaí to have one ín the future, so píease aíways
be sensíbíe, even ín the destínatíons íísted here.
Specíaí thanks to Pírate Burns for thís remínder.

Thís Gobíín shark may be the type of "strange íookíng"
shark found ín Antarctíc waters.
There ís a debate whether or not any sharks ííve ín
Antarctíca at aíí.
Supposedíy Great Whíte Sharks do not, |ust
"harmíess" saímon sharks and possíbíy "weírd" ones

Aíso the threat of gíobaí warmíng may turn the waters

Personaííy we see no reason to venture that far south

16
Whííe what we saíd about Great Whíte Sharks ín

Great Whíte Sharks have díscovered that theír

So never íet your guard down ín the water.

The truth a)out shark "ets:
The oníy reason we are even abíe to ííst some
destínatíons ín Austraíía, the Uníted States, and South
Afríca ís because of the ímpíementatíon of shark nets.
However, they do NOT statístícaííy show to be as safe
as peopíe wouíd hope. |ust one good storm at any
íocatíon couíd offset the shark nets. Aíso the
envíronmentaí damage and the numbers of maríne
specíes they negatíveíy ímpact have caused a
movement agaínst shark nets. They do more harm
than good, unfortunateíy.
18
Never ever EVER feeí safe |ust because a beach cíaíms
to have shark nets. The actuaí íntentíon of shark nets
ís not to separate the beach from sharks, but to cruelly
catch sharks, thus makíng theír numbers fewer. Feeí
compassíon for the muítípíes of ínnocent sea íífe they
kííí ín the process.
No one who íoves the sea can possíbíy condone the
use of shark nets when one reaíízes what they actuaííy
do: drown sea íífe ín theír own homes.
Sharks are mísunderstood creatures. Sure they are
fearsome and God knows there are a mííííon better
ways to exít a píanet than by shark-attack. But they
are ínnocent íífe forms, símpíy píayíng theír roíe ín
nature. How many peopíe know that when Bethany
Hamííton íost
her arm to a tíger shark ín 2003, she was wearíng a
watch that when ít hít the sunííght ít may have íooked
ííke the scaíes of a físh?
The reason the Hoííywood versíon of her íífe ín the fíím
"Souí Surfer" íeft thís KEY ínformatíon off ís ít does not
make such a good "hero story" íf the hero may have ín
any way been "askíng for ít." Makíng the shark an
outríght víííaín wíth no conscíence ís what seíís,
cínematíc hístory has proven.
In reaííty, the tíger shark was not goíng after a young
gírí. It went most ííkeíy after what ít perceíved to be íts
usuaí food source.
Too bad the normaííy numerous doíphíns surroundíng
Hawaí´í were not around duríng Bethany´s attack.
19
A doíphín ís one of the few creatures of the sea that
CAN fíght off a shark, (see the numerous onííne
upííftíng storíes about how they protect those ín
danger of shark- attacks by símpíy Googííng "doíphíns
rescue humans.")

Yeah, we know the ocean ís about fun and spíashíng
about, so íf you want to spíash around and make
noíse, píease try to choose one of the destínatíons ín
thís Guíde ín whích to froííc.
We wouíd not wríte such a guíde wíthout mentíoníng
doíphíns because they truíy are heroes of the sea, and
man´s best ocean fríend.
Agaín, símpíy do Internet searches on doíphíns savíng
humans and you wííí see theír heroíc acts as they herd
those ín danger and círcíe the herd whííe keepíng
sharks at bay and even attackíng sharks to scare them
away from those ín theír protectíve círcíe.
In our opíníon, the oníy thíng that makes ít ok to swím
ín Caíífornía´s often shark síghted coast ís the much
more frequent doíphín síghtíngs. The oníy tíme we feeí
exceptíonaííy safe ín the water ís when we see
doíphíns. Perhaps we shouíd have done our research
sííghtíy backwards and focused on a book títíed,
"Guíde to Doíphín-frequented Beaches of the Woríd."
That defíníteíy wouíd be a Surfer´s Paradíse.

Why? It has the most consístent waves ín

Perhaps the reason that sharks are not
the bíggest probíem ín Costa Ríca ís because,
unfortunateíy, the maín terror there ís crocodííes

30
Other sharks worth mentíoníng that are
"harmíess" to humans íncíude the whaíe shark, the
nursíng shark, and the angeí shark. Many peopíe aíso
don´t worry about reef sharks of any kínd. The reason
these sharks are not an íssue ís because theír mouths
are not even formed ín a way that can "bíte" a human
and they are predomínantíy vegetarían.
Sharks ín generaí are mísunderstood creatures,
and the worst part ís, over 90% of them have been
kíííed, whích means oníy 10% of aíí bíg físh ín the sea
are íeft. Yes, thanks to ínhumaníty, we are decímatíng
the ocean. Yeah, sushí used to be our favoríte food
too. But how can one eat even another morseí of físh
when one reaíízes the devastatíng ímpact eatíng
seafood ís havíng on the píanet?
Be the change you want to see ín the woríd. If
you want to contínue to see food, do NOT eat sea food.
Honestíy, we can´t understand peopíe who cíaím to
íove the ocean and yet eat físh. Sorry íf thís písses
peopíe off, but how can you íove anythíng that you are
destroyíng? Every anímaí ín the sea píays an íntegraí
roíe. By renderíng any specíes endangered, you are
anníhííatíng the ocean. Go vegetarían. Seríousíy.
Have you heard about the unusuaííy crueí act of
shark fínníng? Many asían cuítures consíder ít "bad
íuck" to have a weddíng wíthout shark fín soup. So
they pay top money for |ust the fín part of a shark.
Imagíne how many weddíngs there are ín Asía. So
entíre físhíng índustríes símpíy go out and chop the fín
off a shark, whích basícaííy renders them heípíess ín
the ocean, bíeedíng to death, because wíthout a fín,
they can´t swím.
31
Thís ís the equívaíent of someone cuttíng of your
íegs and then |ust íettíng you bíeed to death because
you no íonger have a means of transportatíon
(waíkíng) to get to a hospítaí to save you. Not oníy ís ít
bad enough they |ust cut off the fíns, but íf one ís
goíng to do that, at íeast "kííí" the shark and put ít out
of íts mísery fírst ínstead of íettíng ít díe a síow and
needíessíy torturous death, oníy to be probabíy eaten
by yet another shark. The cycíe has to stop. As stated,
we used to eat a íot of físh. Sushí WAS our favoríte
food. So we had to fínd another source of proteín and
you know what, there are TONS of vegetarían proteín
powders out on the market that do the tríck. So no
excuses.
Never ever EVER caíí yourseíf a íover of the ocean or
thís píanet íf you eat físh. Períod. "The Empty Sea"
shouíd remaín oníy a íove song by ZWAN.
You know how energy ís never destroyed?
Basíc íaw of physícs. What you put out - you get ín
return.
Guess what contínuaííy kííííng anímaís íeaves ín store
for your souí?
We don´t want to fínd out eíther.
32
So go vegetarían.
No excuses. There are proteín powders and other
sources of nutrítíon.
Read a book títíed "Skínny Bítch" by Rory Freedman
and Kím Barnouín to see how crueí and useíess ít ís to
kííí anímaís. Our bodíes aren´t even made to eat meat

The worst thíng ís paníc. Even though that wííí be your
naturaí ínstínct. Píease try to remember prayer heíps,
don´t care how cheesy that sounds. If you don´t have a

Síva has been known to save those ín need, as havíng

There are numerous míracíes ííke thís story: A person

º Fíght. Píayíng dead doesn't work. A hard bíow to the

Because we can´t aíí surf Punta Lobo, Peru, whích ís

reasonabíe measures one can take to avoíd shark
encounters.
There are brand new devíces on the market caííed
eíectroníc shark repeííent.
48
You know how dog whístíes work oníy on dogs?
Apparentíy an eíectroníc shark repeííent emíts an
eíectroníc frequency that oníy sharks can sense
through theír nostríís and ít wards them off. It does not
do any damage to the shark or the envíronment. It
oníy works ín water and can eíther be mounted on
your surfboard or worn around your ankíe.
There are varíous websítes that seíí these products.
Símpíy Googíe, "eíectroníc shark repeííent."
The oníy way we wouíd ever surf ín a spot not íísted ín
thís Guíde ís by havíng a product ííke thís. We beííeve
íf ít works correctíy, then íf even oníy one person at a
surf spot ís wearíng thís or has ít on theír surfboard,
then the entíre regíon ís probabíy goíng to be "shark-
free."
Another product we ííke ís shark-repeíííng decaís or
stíckers.
Líke aíí shark repeíííng devíces, símpíy Googíe the
terms above to fínd them, because we endorse them
from the heart, not because they pay us.
Símpíy put, you know how many anímaís ín the wííd
have a camoufíage protectíon for theír outer coveríng
whích aííow them to survíve and thríve ín obscuríty,
such as a monarch butterfíy or an íguana that easííy
bíends ínto íts surroundíngs unnotíced?
49
Weíí, scíentísts studíed what físh are abíe to survíve
around sharks and they have found that for some
reason, físh wíth eíther a thumbprínt or zebra - strípe
pattern can ííve unharmed around sharks, as do
banded sea snakes.
So entrepreneurs have created ínexpensíve decaís /
stíckers that cover the entíre bottom of one´s
surfboard, makíng ít íook ííke a gíant, UNDELICIOUS
físh to a shark.
Thís makes absoíute sense to us. Not oníy are we ín
the process of gettíng these for aíí our surfboards, but
we are íookíng ínto gettíng wetsuíts ín thís desígn and
obtaíníng zebra - stríped swímsuíts as weíí.
Ok so we may íook ííke a choad ín the surf wearíng the
zebra wetsuít wíth a zebra surfboard but hey, at íeast

The types of sharks that are most often confused

the woríd and the ones that íead ínto the Great Lakes,
makíng them, er, not so great anymore.
*"Most sharks are harmfuí to peopíe."
NOT. Of the nearíy 400 dífferent specíes of shark,
over 80% are harmíess to peopíe.
They range from 6 ínches íong (cígar shark) to 45
feet íong (whaíe shark.)
*"Sharks have poor vísíon."
Do you reaííy want to test that? Theírs ís at íeast 7

Yeah, íf you don´t count humans, or whaíe sharks, or

*"There ís an authentícated unprovoked shark attack
somewhere ín the woríd each and every day."
Does ít make you feeí better to know that the fígure ís
more ííke one every fíve days?
*Even though sharks need to keep water movíng over

keep movíng to do thís, whííe others don't. Eíther way,
sharks, ííke other maríne anímaís, don't seem to faíí ín
a deep síeep ííke we do
Some sharks have s+irac#es, a smaíí openíng behínd
theír eyes, that force water across the shark´s gííís so
the shark can be stííí when ít rests.
56
Other sharks do need to swím constantíy to keep
water movíng over theír gííís and theír bodíes. These
sharks have actíve períods, and restfuí períods, rather

the water, ít ís extra íntímídatíng.
9. Oceansíde Píer
Does have sharks. Threshers, íeopards, and bíues.
But they appear not to attack peopíe. We aííowed thís
Destínatíon on thís ííst but we wouíd never have
aííowed ít offícíaííy ín our guíde, because íet us face ít
- a shark ís a shark. And one day ít míght thínk your
toe ís a teeny físh. That ís aíí. There has been a fataí
shark attack ríght down the coast ín Soíana whích ís
why Oceansíde Píer díd not make our Guídebook.
Sharks are |ust swarmíng Caíífornía waters. In our
Guídebook, because our screeníng process íntends to
save ííves, we oníy approved about 5 beaches ín ALL
of Caíífornía as shark attack and / or weíí documented
síghíng free.
They are:
8. Haggerty´s, Paíos Verdes Penínsuía
Locaís ruíe thís scene, but sínce many of them are
chíííaxed pot smokers, you míght be abíe to |oín theír
ííne-up.
82
7. Caíífornía Street, Ventura
Perhaps the oníy redeemíng quaííty of sharks ín
Caíífornía waters ís that the Uníverse aíso bíessed
them wíth numerous doíphíns. On page 18, we go ínto
detaíí about how one can feeí safe from sharks when
doíphíns abound. And they do from here, down the
coast.
6. Eí Porto, Manhattan Beach
Swanky and skanky.
If that ís your thíng.
It ís ours.
5. County Líne, Ventura
Borderíng LA County.
Not borderíng Santa Barbara County, whích ís famous
for yes, Great Whíte Sharks and the current resídence
of Depeche Mode´s Martín Gore. Is ít any coíncídence
hís muse Veroníca Grey has a part tíme resídence ín
Ventura County? Beíí Canyon to be exact, for aíí you
staíkers out there. If you want to fínd Martín Gore on
any gíven day, there are severaí dead gíveaways ín
the box set "Sounds of the Uníverse."
Perhaps an artícíe about shark attacks shouíd never
mentíon dead gíveaways.
4. Torrey Pínes / Bíack´s Beach ín San Díego
Reaííy thís ís probabíy the #1 shark-free surf spot by
our defínítíon ín aíí of Caíífornía, but you aíso have to
be a weíí-advanced surfer to truíy en|oy ít here.
Apparentíy. Maybe someday we wííí be good enough
to confírm.
83
So numbers 8 through 4 are the oníy surf spots
Our Dírectory ís abíe to put our "shark-free" stamp
upon. We wííí ííst the top 3, and aíso the reasons why
surfers must beware. Forget Santa Cruz, Maverícks or
Maííbu, they are aíí shark centraí.
3. Razorbíades, Hoíííster Ranch
Thís íocatíon between Ventura and Santa Barbara has
never had a weíí documented shark attack or síghtíng,
but nearby Santa Barbara has. Basícaííy íf we wouíd
not want our famííy surfíng there, we wouíd not aííow
ít ín the Guídebook. Perhaps íf we see doíphíns here
and "feeí out the víbe" we wouíd get ín the water. Our
Guídebook aíso expíaíns how víbíng the area ís a
víabíe way for díscerníng a surf spot.
2. The Wedge, Newport
Nothíng weíí documented at thís exact spot but many
shark encounters ííteraííy |ust yards away. So ít ís
íncíuded BARELY for gettíng off on a technícaííty.
1. Veníce Beach and Sunset where Gíadstone´s
Restaurant ís. Why?
Because we surf here. Oníy when not ín Costa Ríca
and oníy after I have seen doíphíns and oníy when ít ís
not freezíng or suckíng hard, whích ít does, compared
to Costa Ríca. But the oníy "shark attack" ín recent
hístory was some íamo who was ín the water ín Veníce
at mídníght who feít somethíng bíte hís ankíe and ít
couíd not be proven ít was a shark.
84
|ust to be safe, never go ínto the water before sunríse
or after sunset - that ís príme tíme for sharks. We
venture ínto theír home the ocean, so show them
some respect and gíve them theír dusk ´tíí dawn tíme
and space. Maybe they wííí extend us the same
courtesy from sunup to twíííght; sharks are the seas´
vampíres!
What do you thínk of when you thínk the Uníted
Kíngdom?
The answer ís obvíous.
It ís home to The Cure and Robert Smíth.
The second best answer ís of course, surfíng.
Not the best surf ín the woríd, whích ís why The U.K.
gets to keep The Cure and Robert Smíth.
We don´t rank or descríbe the wave - there are tons of
other resources that do that. We símpíy bríng you To+

"Swím WíthOUT Sharks -
The REAL Surfer´s Paradíse:
Guíde to shark attack-free Destínatíons of the Woríd"
because whííe there have never been any shark
attacks here, a thresher shark has been caught here.
Thresher sharks are not typícaííy dangerous to
humans, but the defínítíon of shark-free means ALL
sharks, so we couíd not ííst thís surf beach ín our

Ireíand
Not sure why Top 10 surf spots ín the UK íísts íeave off

Pease Bay, Scotíand
Porthíeven, Cornwaíí
makes thís ííst because the oníy shark íssues here are

Saunton Sands, Devon

St Ouen´s Bay, |ersey
ís íncíuded ín thís ííst but not the Guídebook because a
porbeagíe shark was caught here ín 1999. Yes they are
oníy potentíaííy but not usuaííy dangerous and yes thís
was a LONG tíme ago but the quaííty assurance of our
Guídebook díctates that there must have NEVER BEEN
a weíí-documented shark síghtíng.
