January 2014 To Whom It May Concern: It gives me great pleasure to write this letter of support for Katherine Koskie

. Katherine was a student in my ESST 300 class at the University of Regina in Fall, 2012. I have had the opportunity to get to know her well in this context and we have continued to correspond during her pre-internship and internship semesters. My assessment of Katherine is as an extremely thoughtful, intelligent, and self-motivated individual who is dedicated to education, teaching and her own professional development. Katherine successfully completed her internship placement at Melville Comprehensive School where she taught both Social Studies and English Language Arts classes. What I appreciate about Katherine’s approach to teaching these subjects is her commitment to transformative learning, particularly with respect to integrating social justice issues. Because she has completed the two day Treaty education workshop through the Office of the Treaty Commissioner, along with 9 credits of Indigenous Studies at the University, Katherine is able to embed treaty outcomes and indicators in her teaching, thus supporting this provincial curriculum mandate. During the ESST 300 class, Katherine and her colleagues worked with a class of grade 12 students at one of the local Regina high schools to deliver Project of Heart, an inquiry into the history of Residential Schools in Canada. Given the difficult dialogues necessary for such an inquiry, Katherine worked hard to ensure the grade 12 students could ask questions and explore content in a supportive environment. I was impressed with Katherine during this six week initiative as she worked hard to learn as much as she could about the history and ongoing legacies of residential school and to translate this learning for the grade 12 students. Throughout my semester with Katherine, she shared insightful comments, and was always willing to engage with difficult topics and issues. She was eager to learn as much as possible about social studies curriculum and pedagogy. Katherine worked extremely hard in all aspects of the course, from Project of Heart, to creating learning plans, to researching and writing a paper that explored an issue in social studies education, and I was very impressed with the quality of her assignments.
