Summary

The paper Titled Real Time seismic Monitoring Needs of Building Owner and the Solution: A Cooperative Effort by Celebi et. al. 2004 is based on site practical carried out for development and implementation of seismic monitoring system (SMS) for multistory building. The purpose of seismic monitoring system is to capture the data during seismic event. Such data can be used for decision making of functionality and occupancy of the building as well as evaluation of behavior of existing structure during earthquake. As a result this understanding design and construction practice can be modified so that future earthquake damage is minimized.

In the case study, the owner of a building in collaboration with federal agency with expertizing seismic monitoring of buildings, private consulting engineers and suppliers facilitated development and implementation of seismic motoring system (SMS) for 24 story steel framing building in San Francisco, California. The owner wants to know whether he can continue the usage of building even after the earthquake or the building requires certain type of treatment like inception, retrofitting or repair. Certain norms are created for the same which will help in evaluating the building efficiently. The method for the Post earthquake assessment will be based on FEMA-352. The deformation pattern created from captured data will be a useful factor for assessment and one of the most efficient way of capturing response in a building is to deploy accelerometers at certain locations of the building as per COS-MOS 2001. Another useful parameter required is to calculate average drift ratios. These drift ratios are used to estimate the performance and the damage of the building after earthquake. The third and the final important parameter to be calculated is the displacement of the each floor from the acceleration data calculated. The monitoring system selected for the assessment is based on specific requirements which will facilitate the needs of the owner of building. The monitoring system used for this assessment is having a server at site and a control room at other location. So the server room can be controlled remotely. When acceleration in the building increases beyond certain point that is when the recording starts. The server is controlled by a software which is multi-threaded as it does multiple functions for the system. Initial data is collected from sensor via analog signal it is converted into raw data which can used. All the data collected are then transferred to client software for analysis. The analyzed data clearly indicated that at a low amplitude response, the signal to noise is quite high. For high amplitude earthquakes it can increase even further. So we can conclude that by implementing the SMS in the building we can obtain sufficient data which will help in making decisions regarding occupancy of building. The client software used is very useful and capable of obtaining all the necessary data required to calculate the near real time responses especially drift ratios as they are important to determine building occupancy.
