Architecture functions like a theater play. It encompasses a series of scenes that when put together manage to create an expectacular show. Yet, as the play, architecture is more about the process of creation and the experience it gives people. These scenes may be the steps that one takes as a designer to generate a building, or it might be the several aspects that constitute a good building - deisgn, structure, material. Just like in theater, without its scenes architecture would be incomplete; through our own designs we can emulate our inner imaginations into the world in which we live in. We can create different experiences for a person, and mold the way they will feel and interact with spaces. It expresses our most inner personality. Raquel Guzman Geara

SITE ANALYSIS - marker on vellum

PLAY. LEARN. RELAX This project encompassed the idea of designing a destination and creating spaces where people can gather to learn, shop and relax. The design has a program that includes a public plaza and park, and an artisans and farmers market area. Two approaches were taken before starting the design: site analysis and massing analysis. With a thorough analysis of site conditions, circulation and figure ground representations the basic placement of the building masses were created. Through the analysis of the circulation the basic conditions of the new site were designed allocating two new vehicular entries going from Saint Juliens street to Randolph street.

TESLA: WEAVING T WO OPPOSITE IDEAS

INTERWEAVE: TO INTERLACE AND FORM BY COMBINING VARIOUS ELEMENTS AND/OR IDEAS.

Tesla motors was founded in 2003 to prove that electric vehicles could be attractive and at the same time energy efficient. Tesla offers the most efficient path to sustainable energy future. Teslas goals consist on weaving two opposite ideas into one. An energy efficient yet elegant and power full car. Therefore this project presents ideas of intertwining the exterior and interior spaces and ideas to connect both sites. Using two materials: glass and concrete. It also has a major element, which are the spanning red columns that go from one floor to another. The building will be set in the city of Detroit in Michigan. After analyzing the site, the class understood that Detroit is a decaying city, were grafiti and abandoned buildings predominate. Ther fore the idea of the building is to bring an air of lightness in between the stark and bold buildings. So glass predominates in the construction.

MOVEMENT & INTERACTION

THIS WORLD IS BUT A CANVAS TO OUR IMAGINATION. ~henry david thoreau

The Savannah Cultural Arts Center is a space for gathering people, inspiring students, and creating art. The overall idea of the design, is for the building to become an art piece itself, while at the same time to bring whats happening in the interior of it, to the city of Savannah. Therefore, the use of glass in large parts of the building, creates an interaction between the artsits and the citizens. This concept was also developed with the idea that people go to theaters, to see and be seen. To achieve that, the building becomes a transparent entity that reveals the activities taking place inside. To develop the massing and programming of the building the concept of movement and interaction were analyzed. With this we analyzed movement within the building and within the site; the interaction of the building with the people, the building entities, and the building with the site.To analyze movement and interaction in a conceptual way we used a ballerina.

PRESERVATION AS PROVOCATION
USING THE PAST AND THE PRESENT TO CREATE A BETTER FUTURE.
For this project the history of the site and the analysis of time were taken into consideration to decide the building type. Shutes Folly island and the city of Charleston can be seen as one single entity both with very conflicted pasts . It was taken into consideration that the island was a very tense point; it was used as a lookout to keep people away. Even though it didnt receive any action the activities that happened or that were meant to occur were of strain. Even though this situations have diminished, today there is still conflict but in a passive way. There is a separation of race, class, age, and other aspects of peoples lives. The island has been abandoned so its a very inactive place, but very calm and peaceful. Taking into consideration the past and the present of the site, a new alternative was created: activating the site and bringing people together . This way, when people come to this place, they leave all the separation behind, they come and decompress their minds from a chaotic society.

The design is letting the site BE what it wants to be. It is complementing it, instead of trying to compete with it. It re-interprets the idea of what lookout points in a fort should be. Originally this points, where the two halfcircles, and soldiers would have to use these as watchpoints for the enemy. The new design, wraps the pathways created for the island along these ears to create a belvedere. This points will now be a lookout to the world that surrounds the island. A place for tranquility and not tension. The points of freedom.
The building responds to the natural curves of the island created by the interaction of the tides and the idea of guiding the person toward the castle. The recreation building was placed in a corner of the island, instead of right in the castle for the purpose of creating different points of interaction around the site, instead of just having one point of congregation. At the same time it creates several triangulation points* Its form was deliberately more organic, because CAFETERIA it was meant to merge with the site, and create (THIRD FLOOR) a balance between building and landscape. revit & photoshop

The watefront is one of the most interesting and prominent part of a city, and not many cities have the privilege of having one. Savannahs River Street has been successful, mostly for tourists, yet it is only partially used. To tackle this problem we took the two ends (perceived) of the waterfront and turned them into parks. By doing this the whole street will be activated and conencted. CONNECTIVITY [BETWEEN] 1) City and Waterfront 2) People: Student, Local, Tourist 3) Two ends of Riverstreet TRANSPORTATION 1) Bike Hubs 2) Vehicular Parking 3) Reactivate Trolley
