Thus. 4.2 Components of the RNC Service Processing Subsystem The RNC service processing subsystem consists of the common service processing unit. Service processing subsystems communicate with each other through the switching subsystem to perform coordination tasks such as handover. signaling processing unit. The service processing subsystem has the following functions: l l l l l l l l l l l User data transfer System admission control Radio channel ciphering and deciphering Integrity protection Mobility management Radio resource management and control Cell broadcast service Multimedia broadcast Message tracing Data volume reporting Radio Access Network (RAN) information management Service processing subsystems can be increased linearly as required.

Data Processing Unit The data processing unit is implemented by the DPUb board. refer to Functions of the DPUb Board. For details about the functions of the DPUb board. Iur. and Iub interfaces. A DPUb board has 22 Digital Signal Processors (DSPs). and Iub interfaces. The SPUa board processes signaling messages on the Uu. The CSUa board processes the Packet Data Convergence Protocol (PDCP) and Radio Link Control (RLC) data for the Multimedia Broadcast and Multicast Service (MBMS). Iu. Iur. The transport network layer provides bearer resources for the signaling on the Iu. The data processing unit has the following modules: Issue 02 (2007-08-15) Huawei Technologies Proprietary 4-3 . An SPUa board has four independent subsystems. The two layers have the following functions: l l The radio network layer processes the signaling on the Uu. refer to Functions of the SPUa Board. The CSUa board is permanently configured in the RSS subrack. The DPUb performs L2 processing on the data sent from the interface board and separates CS and PS domain data and Uu signaling messages.RNC Product Description 4 RNC Service Processing Subsystem Figure 4-1 Components of the RNC service processing subsystem Common Service Processing Unit The common service processing unit is implemented by the CSUa board. the capacity of the RNC can be increased smoothly. thus comprising a group of resources. radio resource reconfiguration. transport channel scheduling. These functions are mapping of logical channels to transport channels. BMC: Broadcast/Multicast Control protocol (BMC) stores cell broadcast messages. Iu UP: Iu User Plane (Iu UP) performs operations such as Iu UP inband control procedures and data conversion and transmission from Non-Access Stratum (NAS) at the CN to the Access Stratum (AS) user plane at the RNC. synchronization. Each group is controlled by a subsystem of the SPUa board. An SPM consists of two SPUa boards (active/standby) and two DPUb boards. PDCP: Packet Data Convergence Protocol (PDCP) processes PS data on the Iu interface and forwards the data during certain operations. Figure 4-2 shows the relationship. requests radio resources for Cell Broadcast Service (CBS). the SPUa boards in slots 0 and 1 are teamed with the DPUb boards in slots 8 and 9. NOTE l l l The RSS subrack can be configured with 2 SPMs and an RBS subrack with 3 SPMs. The RNC supports a maximum of 17 SPMs. AM provides the sliding window mechanism to ensure error-free data transmission. MAC-es entities process High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) services. schedules BMC messages. The resources in an SPM are divided into four groups. All the SPMs comprise a large resource pool. The RNC can appropriately schedule service resources among the SPMs. l l l l l l SPM The Service Processing Module (SPM) is the basic service processing unit of the RNC. In an RBS subrack. MDC: Macro Diversity Combining (MDC) processes the uplink combining and downlink distribution of the macro diversity for a UE during soft handover. the SPUa boards in slots 2 and 3 with the DPUb boards in slots 10 and 11. and the SPUa boards in slots 4 and 5 with the DPUb boards in slots 10 and 11. MAC-d entities process data on dedicated channels. thus improving the transmission quality. measures traffic. Through the addition of SPMs. and time adjustment on the Iub and Iur interfaces. In the RSS subrack. The service processing subsystem of the RNC adopts the SPM-based modular design. and MAC-es. MAC: Media Access Control (MAC) implements certain functions during data transmission. One SPM supports 100 NodeBs and 300 cells. These operations are PS data transmission. and lossless Serving Radio Network System (SRNS) relocation. MAC entities are of three types: MAC-c.4 RNC Service Processing Subsystem l RNC Product Description FP: Frame Protocol (FP) implements signaling procedures such as frame processing. It works as an independent service resource node. An SPM works as a resource pool. MAC-c entities process data on common channels. each subsystem of the SPUa board is teamed with 11 DSPs on a DPUb board. RLC: Radio Link Control (RLC) transfers upper-layer Service Data Units (SDUs) in Transparent Mode (TM). Unacknowledged Mode (UM). and traffic volume measurement. header compression and decompression of IP data streams. Therefore.
