Lesson focus:
3 min.

Introduce the idea of having 6 countries that are going to compete in our activities this week. We will be with the same teammates all week, so today we will meet our teammates and go through some team-building activities that will encourage cooperation through the competition. This idea is important because as you will learn this week, Olympic athletes must be highly skilled in the event, but they also must be mentally focused and show positive personal/social skills.

2 min.

On GO, get together with your country group and head to an open areaGO

35 min.

APPLIED ACTIVITY: Team-Building Activities

Helium StickLine up in two rows which face each other. Introduce the Helium Stick- a long, thin, lightweight rod. Ask participants to point their index fingers and hold their arms out. Lay the Helium Stick down on their fingers. Get the group to adjust their finger heights until the Helium Stick is horizontal and everyone's index fingers are touching the stick. Explain that the challenge is to lower the Helium Stick to the ground. The catch: Each person's fingers must be in contact with the Helium Stick at all times. Pinching or grabbing the pole in not allowed - it must rest on top of fingers. Reiterate to the group that if anyone's finger is caught not touching the Helium Stick, the task will be restarted. Let the task begin....

PolySpot Maze Using the iPad, create a maze and have ALL students participate together. The student at the front of the line will take a step and if they are correct, they keep going, if they mess up, they go to the end of the line and the next person tries. Continue that process until the students make it through the maze correctly. Blind Group Counting Have students circle up and close their eyes, the goal is to count up to 10, but only 1 person can say each number and the person to either side of the one who said the previous number CANNOT say the next number. 1 min.
