Students design responses to sterotypes

In this age of ever-expanding

digital media, images are becom-
ing more powerful. At
Moorestown Friends School,
upper elementary students
showed off their interpretations
of the challenges images in the
media present and how stereo-
types are propagated through
some of these images.
Debuted April 23, “the upper
school students were invited to
choose any image from the media
that they felt negatively stereo-
typed a group of people,” Kat
Clark, assistant director of mar-
keting and communications at
MFS, said. “We wanted to support
an event that the students could
lead, and we wanted them to be
able to share their thoughts and
discoveries with a large audience
in a creative way.”

stereotype from popular culture
and design a response to it using
people in the MFS community,”
upper school social studies
teacher Eliza McFeely further ex-
plained.
The exhibit at MFS was official-
ly titled “Challenging Stereotypes
in the Media: A Student Photogra-
phy Exhibition.”

“I think stereotypes in the
media impact everyone in some
way, as we are all exposed to them.
I know I see negative stereotypes
every day in commercials alone,”

wanted to challenge the stereo-
type that women are unequal to
men … I think MFS has done a
great job opening students' eyes to
this issue.”
To present the media chal-
lenges, students took mirroring
interpretative photos of specific
images.

lighted why she embraced the
concept of vaguely mirroring im-
ages being the basis for the pho-
tography exhibited.
“I think that viewing my image
is all about the juxtaposition. I
hope that viewing a positive alter-
native to the original shows peo-
ple how absurd and sexist the
original ad really is,” Mullen said.
Mullen’s presentation showed
popular biases regarding women
and sexism.
“Though I can say Moorestown
Friends has an environment in
which many of these stereotypes
are not perpetuated, I feel as
though sometimes students don’t
necessarily see stereotypes as an
issue … I hope people view my
submission and realize that even
though it's been repeated count-
less times by countless women,
lewd statements are not and never
will be playful; they are demean-
ing and aim to steal power,”
Mullen said.
Teitelbaum agreed with
Mullen, in the sense that raising
attention to issues, even if they
are seemingly common, is a posi-
tive lesson for all involved.
“I think raising awareness is
what matters. Being able to point
out a negative stereotype being
shown in an ad is something real-
ly important for students to
learn,” Teitelbaum said.
The exhibit is one that will
raise questions about commonali-
ties in advertising and print cul-
ture. According to some teachers,
many MFS students were think-
ing critically about the issues in-
volving negative stereotypes prior
to the exhibit, as many MFS clubs
and events continue to promote
diversity.

5k walk/run May 4
Moorestown High School’s In-
teract club will be hosting a 5K
walk/run on Sunday, May 4, at
Moorestown High School, 803 N.
Stanwick Road. The proceeds of
the event will benefit the DREAM
Program, a non-profit organiza-
tion serving children in low in-
come housing.
Marathon experience is not re-
quired for participation, as walk-
ing and running is equally en-
couraged.
“I expect a good outcome,” In-
teract Club member Amira
Scaramella said. “It is an even a
bigger one than last year. Twelve
sponsors have donated money,
food, prizes, and we have free
shirts and towels.”
Scaramella also mentioned
that as the event is taking place
on a Sunday, so it will not conflict
with any MHS sport practices.

Sign-ups are available online,
or on the day of event. Registra-
tion on May 4 will begin at 7:30
a.m., and will cost $15 for students
and $25 for adults.
The Interact Club’s DREAM 5k
last year raised more than $1,000,
and Interact hopes to beat that
total this year.

‘Under God’ no more?
Changes should not be made to the Pledge of Allegiance

the fact that we attended school
in this country:
“I pledge allegiance to the Flag of
the United States of America, and to
the Republic for which it stands, one
Nation under God, indivisible, with
liberty and justice for all.”
The pledge was written more than
120 years ago, and Congress formally
adopted it in 1942. But it wasn’t until
Flag Day in 1954 that the Pledge be-
came a point of controversy.
That year, while the U.S. was fully
encapsulated in the Cold War, two
words, “under God,” were added to the
Pledge to differentiate the U.S. from
the concept of communist atheism.
At the time, there wasn’t much to it.
A group of Jehovah’s Witnesses chal-
lenged the Pledge in the 1950s, but the
legal fight against the words “under
God” didn’t pick up steam until more

out some members of the Moorestown com-
munity who may not have been attentive

young mothers, elders and business owners

have changed the labels to “winter
break” and “spring break,” the reason
students get off from school is because
of religious holidays – Christmas and
Easter. Many school districts also
close for the Jewish holidays of Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
Religion and history go hand in
hand in this country. It’s hard to have
one without the other. Our schools
teach about this history – through
books, homework and tests, but also
through breaking for religious holi-
days and by saying the Pledge. And as
long as that history doesn’t violate the
Constitution, then we shouldn’t
change that history.

Joe Donnelly named
Freeholder of the Year
Burlington County Freeholder
Joe Donnelly was recently named
“Freeholder of the Year” by the
New Jersey Conference of May-
ors in recognition of his efforts as
a dedicated public servant.
“While I am honored, this
award truly recognizes the great
work we have done as an entire
board,” Donnelly said. “Together
we have cut county property
taxes six years in a row and re-
duced government spending by
millions of dollars, all while con-
tinuing to improve services for
our residents. The acknowledg-
ment from the New Jersey Con-
ference of Mayors demonstrates
that by doing more with less

state.”
Congratulating Donnelly, Free-

noted that, “Since he was first
elected in 2007, Freeholder Don-

meeting of the New Jersey Con-

Donnelly came to the board
with a wealth of local govern-

total nine years as a member of
Riverton Borough Council, and
later Cinnaminson Township
Committee, serving two terms as
mayor of Cinnaminson. While on
committee he helped spearhead a
$100 million redevelopment proj-
ect on Route 130 that includes
new commercial and residential
development, and major highway
improvements.

of School Estimates for the
Burlington County College, spe-
cial services, and BCIT. He and
his wife, Christine, have two
daughters, Caitlin and Julia.

county engineer Joe Brickley and
his team dedicated to improving
pothole and road conditions
throughout the county as part of
the board of chosen freeholder’s
three point countywide emer-
gency pothole mitigation plan.
“With the severe winter
having taken a devastating toll on
roads throughout the area, coun-
ty engineer Joe Brickley
and his team have worked tire-
lessly to tackle this enormous un-
dertaking” Howarth said. “While
the work is not over, their efforts
have already gone a long
way in effectively improving road
conditions throughout the coun-
ty.”

As part of his update to the
freeholders, Brickley reported
that this hotline has been success-
ful in helping to better identify,
prioritize and promptly address
problem areas.
