New 1600 kV ultra high voltage research centre at Ambad MIDC

NASHIK: The Crompton Greaves Ltd (CGL), an Avantha Group company, on Saturday commissioned a 1,600 kV Ultra High Voltage (UHV) Research Centre at its switchgear manufacturing unit at Ambad industrial estate of Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC). The research centre, which is located at CGL's existing unit in Ambad MIDC, covers a carpet area of 21,786 sq ft with a height of 118 ft, electrical-noise-free infrastructure, built with sophistication, intricacy and equipped with the latest state-of-the-art testing equipments. The company has invested around Rs 40 crore in the R&D Centre, officials said. Laurent Demortier, CEO and MD, CGL said, "This Research Centre is milestone of the company and will provide us with the necessary tools to effectively compete in the fast growing UHV/ EHV market segments. The CG centre in Nashik, which has been providing MV (Medium Voltage) and HV (High Voltage) switchgear for customers all around the world, will fuel CGL's growth by producing a full range of EHV and UHV switchgear up to 1,200 kV" The centre was inaugurated in the presence of Demortier, R N Nayak, chairman and MD of the Power Grid Corporation India Ltd, D S Patil, executive vice president and chief technology officer of the company and J G Kulkarni, executive vice president (power business), CGL on Saturday. The centre will focus on research and development of high power sub-station equipment, such as circuit breakers (live tank and dead tank), GIS (gas insulated switchgear), instrument transformers, current transformers, inductive voltage transformers, capacitive voltage transformers, transformer bushings, surge arresters, and disconnectors with enhanced capabilities. The centre is equipped with 1600 kV AC and 3600 kV, 360 kJ Impulse test systems to conduct all the dielectric performance tests as per the latest global IEC, ANSI standards and other International product standards. It will also facilitate developmental research tests, on new dielectric systems and products. 400 kV power transmission lines between Wardha and Aurangabad The Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) is planning to set up 400 kV power transmission lines in the 300 km stretch between Wardha district and Aurangabad district in Maharashtra. Chairman and managing director of PGCIL R N Nayak told TOI during his visit to Nashik for inauguration of Crompton Greaves Ltd 1,600 kV Ultra High Voltage Research Centre at its manufacturing unit at Ambad MIDC areas. Nayak said, "We are planning to set up 300 km power transmission line of 400 kV between Wardha and Aurangabad. The project is to be undertaken shortly. Moreover, we have plans to set up 18,000 km long power transmission lines across the country in the next coming few years." He further said, "There is vast scope in non-conventional energy sectors like solar and wind. There are around 2.15 lakh hectares of waste lands across the country. The solar projects of around 1,000 MW can be generated even two per cent of total waste land in the country is utilized for solar power generation."
